2. TROUBLESHOOTING
Trouble Probable Cause Remedy
Hard Starting Incorrect external timing to engine. (Refer to TCM Model IO-550 Over-
haul Manual) Correct as required.
Incorrect internal timing. Correct as required.
Point gap setting incorrect. (Refer to TCM Ignition Systems
Master Service Manual) Correct
as required.
Faulty impulse coupling. (Refer to TCM Ignition Systems
Master Service Manual) Correct
as required.
Worn pawls or stop pin. Inspect pawls and stop pin for
wear. Correct as necessary.
Impulse coupling fails to return to
unwound position.
Inspect impulse couple nut for
proper torque.
Fouled spark plugs. Clean spark plugs according to
manufacturer’s specifications.
Incorrect spark plug gap. Regap spark plugs to engine man-
ufacturer’s specifications.
Faulty ignition switch. Inspect ignition switch for possibil-
ity of intermittent grounding and
proper operation. Repair or
replace as necessary.
Corrosion on harness lead con-
tacts.

Master Service Manual) Cleaning
and inspection procedures. Cor-
rect as required.
Magneto internal component
failure.
(Refer to TCM Ignition Systems
Master Service Manual) Specifica-
tions and inspection procedures.
Points Inspect for excessive burning, pit-
ting, corrosion, gap setting, and
general condition.
Cam Inspect cam for excessive wear or
unevenness that could cause
“point spread”.
