Appendix 1 Glossary
Cha nn e l:
An inst ance of m edium use for t he purpose of passing
protocol dat a unit s ( PDUs) t hat m ay be used
sim ultaneously, in the sam e volum e of space, wit h ot her
instances of m edium use( on other channels) by ot her
instances of t he sam e physical layer ( PHY) ,with an
acceptably low fram e error rat io( FER) due t o m utual
interference.
SSI D:
SSI D ( Service Set I dentifier ) is t he network nam e
shared by all devices in a wireless net w ork. Your
net work’s SSI D should be unique t o your net w ork and
identical for all devices within the network. I t is
case- sensitive and m ust not exceed 20 charact ers ( use
any of the charact ers on the keyboard) .Make sure this
sett ing is t he sam e for all devices in your wireless
net work.
W PA/ W PA2 Encr y pt ion:
A security protocol for wireless networks that builds on
the basic foundations of WEP. I t secures wireless data
transm ission by using a key sim ilar to WEP, but the
added st r ength of WPA is t hat t he key changes
dynam ically. The changing key m akes it m uch m ore
difficult for a hacker to learn t he key and gain access t o
