Illness and employee absenteeism can be reduced significantly by monitoring and controlling
humidity. Coughing and sneezing creates an aerosol of virus-filled droplets. Dry air provides
optimal conditions for the viruses to survive. Controlling humidity to between 40% and 60%
can reduce virus transmission by up to 70% (References 8, 9, and 10).
Given these considerations, we identify four parameters which should be monitored and
controlled to provide a healthy, productive indoor climate: CO
2, VOC, RH and PM2.5 fine dust.
3 The role of building automation in health and productivity
The starting point for a healthy, productive indoor climate is to monitor conditions in the
room, most especially in existing buildings. If the measured indoor climate parameters are
incompatible with a healthy and productive climate, adequate measures should be taken.
These would most commonly include improving air filtration and increasing ventilation rates.
For new buildings, it is important from the planning phase onward to consider which type of
building automation is needed for adequate ventilation and humidification/dehumidification,
in addition, of course, to room temperature control.
In this document we indicate which applications and products are used for both monitoring
and controlling indoor climate parameters for a healthy, productive climate.
