Bandwidth Requirements in LAN/WAN Environments
Bandwidth requirements for CAR Alive/Node Survey
There are two different methods for performing a CAR-Alive/Node Survey: either a TCP-based
mechanism or an ICMP ping (configurable with Manage I or WBM).
The rule of thumb for calculating the bandwidth requirement for CAR-Alive between n nodes is:
BandwidthLAN = n × (n-1) × bytesAliveMsg × 8 ÷ 1000 ÷ Ttimeout between ping
and the rule of thumb for calculating the bandwidth requirement for CAR-Alive between n nodes
at the HG 1500 interface is:
BandwidthLAN = (n-1) × (n-1) × bytesAliveMsg × 8 ÷ 1000 ÷ Ttimeout between ping
The value for bytesAliveMsg:
in the LAN is 212 with ping or 127 with TCP
in the WAN is 188 with ping or 102 with TCP
The default timeout between two pings is 12 seconds.
