FHM Hood Evaluation Kit

Product Description

The FHM Hood Evaluation Kit includes basic

supplies necessary to efficiently determine the most

ideal location for a sidewall adapter or sampling

tube. The purpose of these instructions is to explain

various methods used to identify an optimal location

so that the FHM may achieve optimum accuracy.

These instructions contain the basic criteria used to

determine the ideal location and concepts behind

building an averaging tube, if a fume hood requires

one. Additional materials needed are available

locally or are available for order through the Field

Purchasing Guide.

NOTE:

The Siemens Fume Hood Monitor was

designed to indicate face velocity for a

single vertical sash fume hood that is less

than 8 ft. wide. When it is used on older,

more turbulent hoods, or multi-sash fume

hoods, some special modifications may be

necessary.

NOTE:

The Fume Hood Monitor uses “through-

the-wall” technology. The flow is measured

by a single point hot-wire anemometer in

the display unit, connected by a flexible

tube through the sidewall of the hood. The

location and shape of the mobile sample

tube can be critical to achieving specified

velocity measurement accuracy. A few

inexpensive parts (included in this Kit)

allow the user to locate the ideal position

and configuration for the sample tube.

ordered from the Field Purchasing Guide

(MSA 458481).

Expected Evaluation Time

5 to 30 minutes

NOTE:

Installation time is evaluated upon finding

the ideal location for the sidewall adapter.

• If this is your first FHM Hood Evaluation

installation, then read these instructions

entirely before beginning the installation.

• TheFumeHood

must

be balanced before

determining the sidewall adapter location.

Document No. 546-00321 Installations Instructions Rev. 3, February, 2000 With Smoke 1. Determine the position of the mobile sample tube in the hood. In order to do this the optional Smoke Kit may be used. The smoke will be used around the area located 3 inches above the highest sash opening and 6 to 8 inches back from the sash track on the right side of the fume hood. NOTE: The flexible tubing should run under the sash and outside the hood.

NOTE: This condition is caused by turbulent airflow in the hood or by the airflow in the room. i. If the turbulent air is caused by poor room conditions, then use the smoke tubes or some other safe means to visualize how the air currents move around the room.

NOTE: The instructions start with the vertical sashes of the hood and add the horizontal sashes. 1. Open the vertical sash to the highest position (largest sash area and slowest face velocity). Leave the horizontal sashes closed off. 2. Watch the display and move the sash downward. The raw count should increase steadily as the sash is lowered.
