INSTALLATION/WIRING INSTRUCTIONS
AIR DUCT DETECTOR MODELS 8898 AND 8834
INTRODUCTION
Faraday Detector Models 8898 and 8834 are self-contained air duct detectors designed for
installation in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning duct systems. These Detector
Models 8898 and 8834 can use ionization or photoelectric smoke detectors to signal the pres-
ence of combustion products in a duct system. (Refer to TECHNICAL DATA for information on
compatible detectors.)
In addition to the self-contained detection features of the 8898 and 8834, these air duct detec-
tors also can power and supervise the following configurations.
(1) two air duct detectors (Model 8930 or 8840) mounted on the exterior of the duct and em-
ploying sampling tubes to monitor the air in the duct, or
(2) two spot detectors (Model 8854) mounted on the interior wall of the air duct, or
(3) one each of the detectors listed in (1) and (2) above.
TECHNICAL DATA
Smoke Detector Compatibility: 8898 - Use Model 8904 or 8905 only
8834 - Use Model 8854
8930 (Satellite) - Use Model 8904 or 8905 only
8840 (Satellite) - Use Model 8854

Altitude Range: 8898, using 8904 - Altitude range is 0 to 4000 feet
above sea level
8898, using 8905 - Altitude range is 3000 to 8000 feet
above sea level
8834, using 8854 - No altitude limitations; detectors
unaffected by altitude
Relative Humidity Range 0 to 93% (non-condensating) RH per UL 268/268A
Air Duct Velocity Range: 8898: 500 to 4000 ft/min
8834: 300 to 4000 ft/min
Sampling Tube Pressure 8898: 0.017 to 1.07 inches of water
Differential Range: 8834: 0.006 to 1.07 inches of water
CAUTION: These air duct detectors are designed for detection of products of combus-
tion in a duct system. They are not to be used for open area protection.
OPERATION
When the 8898/8834 (8898 or 8834) is in operation, a sample of air is drawn from the duct
and passed through the sampling chamber at low velocity by means of the inlet sampling
