8 Communications
8.1 Remote operation
The web server is not suited for direct connection to the Internet, but rather must
be connected through a firewall. A router typically includes a firewall.
The firewall must be configured to permit only outgoing connections. Incoming
connections must be suppressed.
The web server can be operated from a PC with web browser on a local area
network (LAN) or via the Internet. The following settings are valid as well for access
via Smartphone App and other applications via Web API.
• Web server is not suitable for connecting directly to the Internet and must be
connected over a firewall. Typically, the router has a firewall.
• Configure the firewall to permit only on-going connections; incoming connections
must be suppressed.
• Wherever possible, use only the encrypted portal connection for remotely
access web server.
• Replace the default password with a new, strong password (see Notes on
password strength in Section 2.2.2).
• Change the ACS and ETS access code to prevent unauthorized access.
• Create user accounts with limited access rights.
• Enable automatic logout after a period of inactivity.
• Switch off unsecure ports (e. g. http or ftp) after using (see Commissioning notes
in Section 2.6).
• We recommend using VPN when accessing unsecured (e.g. public) networks.
• Comply with the security notes of the manufacturer of any additional
infrastructure and devices connected to web server.
