Fan Coil Unit Application with PICV control
This is a very common application found in hydronic
systems. Room temperature is monitored and adjusted by
the controller connected to the PICV. Note that modulating
control will yield the higher energy savings of the two control
modes. Each PICV will simplify the installation at each fan coil
by reducing coil hookup devices. With PICV installed there is
no need to have a separate manual balancing valve or flow
limiting device.
Depending on individual room loads and design conditions,
each fan coil could possess different design flow rate
requirements. The PICV provides two benefits for this installation
by allowing the designer and installer to one, set a max flow
equal to design for each fan coil and two, removal of static
balancing valves allows for fewer devices which reduces overall
labor and potentially reduces total required pump head for the
distribution pump.
In terms of operational checks, the differential pressure only
needs to be checked at the critical PICV (often times the furthest
PICV from the pump) and the closest PICV to the distribution
pump. This will allow the operator to gauge whether all PICVs
in the fan coil system are operating within the dP range of the
PI valves.
Plate Heat Exchanger with PICV control
The image on the right has a typical application using
a plate heat exchanger. This type of application can
see the primary flow side of the plate heat exchanger
utilizing the PICV to control flow through the heat
exchanger. The secondary side of the heat exchanger
in this example uses dedicated pump to modulate flow
through the heat exchanger (similar to the pump
arrangements we see for boilers and chillers.)
PICVs with plate heat exchangers can be used in
indirect water heating and as pressure breaks in high
rise building designs.
