With the aspirating smoke detectors
FDA221 and FDA241, Siemens intro-
duces the innovative optical dual-
wavelength detection technology that
uses blue and infrared light sources
for early and reliable fire detection.
The new aspirating smoke detectors
FDA221 and FDA241 from Siemens
use smart, innovative technology for
accurate detection.
Aspirating smoke detection
Aspirating smoke detection (ASD) tech-
nology is ideal for difficult environmental
conditions. Air samples are continuously
drawn from the areas requiring protection
and evaluated in the detector chamber
for the presence of smoke.
New technology for early and reliable
detection
Thanks to the innovative optical dual-
wavelength detection technology, the
aspirating smoke detectors FDA221 and
FDA241 from Siemens offer the highest
detection reliability and immunity to
deceptive phenomena. Using the two
wavelengths blue and infrared, the detec-
tors reliably detect smaller airborne parti-
cles as produced in the earliest stages
of overheating or as found in open fires.
The aspirating smoke detectors from Sie-
mens differentiate between smoke parti-
cles and deceptive phenomena such as
dust or dirt. The detectors are so reliable
that a Genuine Alarm Guarantee can be
offered.
Direct integration
FDA221 and FDA241 can be smoothly
integrated into a fire detection system
from Siemens by placing them directly
onto the detector loop. Benefits include
reduced planning effort and less hardware
and cabling, as all devices are on the
same loop.
Wide range of applications
The aspirating smoke detectors from Sie-
mens are generally used in areas where
point detectors cannot, or have a limited
usage. They are particularly suitable for
application areas where environmentally
challenging conditions prevail, where an
aesthetically appealing solution is desired
or where high detection sensitivity is
needed.

Planning an ASD network
Example “historical rchitecture” Function principle
In historical buildings, the challenge is
to not obstruct the artistically designed,
historically valuable walls and ceilings. That
is why a hidden installation of the sampling
pipe network should be chosen. Usually, the
sampling pipe is installed within a ceiling
void. Capillary tubes are used to draw air
samples from the room that is being pro-
tected. The detector unit can be placed in a
hidden location that is easy to access.
Example “data centers” Function principle
Data centers have a great fi re risk potential
due to all the electronics installed. They also
present diffi cult environmental conditions
because of high ventilation and intensive air
changes. However, they require particularly
early intervention to protect the highly valu-
able equipment and the data it contains.
Aspirating smoke detectors from Siemens
are the ideal solution because they allow,
for example, protection of individual elec-
tronic cabinets. As a result, potential res
can be detected early and reliably.
Example “clean rooms” Function principle
Clean rooms are diffi cult environments
for fi re and smoke detection because of
the forced air fl ow and the high air speed.
Here, an underfl oor ASD system is the ideal
choice. Furthermore, the aspirating smoke
detectors from Siemens can also monitor the
air within the production area for any con-
tamination due to the active air sampling
of the ambient air. Another benefi t is that
maintenance and service personnel don’t
need to enter the clean room because the
aspirating smoke detector can be positioned
outside.
Example “high storage areas” Function principle
In high storage areas like warehouses, the
pipe system can be easily integrated into
the storage infrastructure. As a result, air
samples are actively drawn throughout the
entire height, making fi re detection highly
reliable.
The aspirating smoke detectors from
Siemens can be placed in an easily
accessible location, which facilitates
service and maintenance.
