TheSimpleNetworkManagementProtocol(SNMP)was
designedtoallowremotem anagementandmonitoringofa
varietyofdevicesfromacentrallocation.TheSNMP
managementsystemisgenerallycomposedofagents(suchas
yourPinPointX,arouter,aUPS,awebserver,afileserver,or
othercomputerequipment)
andaNetworkManagement
Station(NMS)whichmonitorsalltheagentsonaspecific
network.Usingthemanagementinformationbase(MIB),an
NMScanincludereporting,networktopologymapping,tools
toallowtrafficmonitoringandtrendanalysis,anddevice
monitoring.
AuthenticationensuresSNMPmessagescomingfromthe
agent,suchasthePinPointX,havenotbeenmodifiedandthe
agentmaynotbequeriedbyunauthorizedusers.SNMPv3
usesaUserBasedSecurityModel(USM)toauthenticateand,
ifdesiredorsupported,messageencryption. USMusesauser
nameandpassword
specifictoeachdevice.
ThePinPointXcanbe configuredasanSNMPagentand
supportsSNMPv2candSNMPv3.
Management Information Base (MIB)
Themanagementinformationbase(MIB)isatypeofdatabase
usedtocompiletheinformationfromthevariousSNMP
agents.Reportsfromvariousagents,suchasthePinPointX,
aresentasdatainformdesignedtobeparsedbythe NMSinto
itsMIB.Thedataishierarchicalwithentries
addressed
throughobjectidentifiers.
SNMP Traps
SNMPtrapsarealertsthatcanbesentfromthemanaged
devicetotheNetworkManagementStationwhenanevent
happens.YourPinPointXiscapableofsendingthelinkUptrap
whenthenetworkconnectionbecomesavailable.
