TheSimpleNetworkManagementProtocol(SNMP)was
designedtoallowremotemanagementandmonitoringofa
varietyofdevicesfromacentrallocation.TheSNMP
managementsystemisgenerallycomposedofagents(suchas
yourPinPoint‐E,arouter,aUPS,awebserver,afileserver,or
othercomputerequipment)
andaNetworkManagement
Station(NMS)whichmonitorsalltheagentsonaspecific
network.Usingthemanagementinformationbase(MIB),an
NMScanincludereporting,networktopologymapping,tools
toallowtrafficmonitoringandtrendanalysis,anddevice
monitoring.
AuthenticationensuresSNMPmessagescomingfromthe
agent,suchasthePinPoint‐E,havenotbeenmodifiedandthe
agentmaynotbequeriedbyunauthorizedusers.SNMPv3
usesaUser‐BasedSecurityModel(USM)toauthenticateand,
ifdesiredorsupported,messageencryption. USMusesauser
nameandpassword
specifictoeachdevice.
ThePinPoint‐EcanbeconfiguredasanSNMPagentand
supportsSNMPv2candSNMPv3.
Management Information Base (MIB)
Themanagementinformationbase(MIB)isatypeofdatabase
usedtocompiletheinformationfromthevariousSNMP
agents.Reportsfromvariousagents,suchasthePinPoint‐E,
aresentasdatainformdesignedtobeparsedbytheNMSinto
itsMIB.Thedataishierarchicalwithentries
addressed
throughobjectidentifiers.
SNMP Traps
SNMPtrapsarealertsthatcanbesentfromthemanaged
devicetotheNetworkManagementStationwhenanevent
happens.YourPinPoint‐EiscapableofsendingthelinkUptrap
whenthenetworkconnectionbecomesavailable.
