Introduction The Simple Technology 56K Communicator, 33.6K Communicator with SimpleJack and 33.6K Communicator PC Card modems can be upgraded for use with a cellular phone as follows: 1. Select the appropriate CellPhone cable. 2. Do not connect the CellPhone cable with the modem, until the cellphone driver is installed. 3. Install CellPhone Driver in the modem flash memory by running the provided software. 4. Connect the modem with the cellphone using the Cellphone cable.

2. Connect cellphone cable with the modem Attach the Cellphone cable to the Simple Technology modem PC Card as shown below. Then insert the PC card modem in the PCMCIA socket. Do not connect the Cellphone cable to the PC Card modem until the installation of CellPhone driver is done as indicated in the following chapter. Figure 1. 3. Installation Procedure for Cellphone Driver Make sure the PC Card modem is inserted in the PCMCIA slot. Install the CellPhone driver as described below. 3A . Installation Procedure for Windows 3.1x or Windows95 Proceed as follows: 1. Install the modem communication software, if not already installed, as described in the User Guide that came with the modem. 2. Start Windows 3.1x or Windows 95. Insert the PC Card modem in the PCMCIA slot. 3.
. When the following screen appears, click continue to install the modem upgrade utility in c:\modem directory. 8. After the installation of the utility is complete, the following screen appears and a program group icon “Modem Upgrade Utility” is created as shown below. 9. Running Modem Upgrade Utility Make sure the PC Card modem is inserted in the PCMCIA slot. Make sure the computer is on AC Power or the battery is fully charged. Disable screen saver and switch off suspend/resume mode.
The software will test for presence of modems on different COM ports. If the following message appears, click Yes to continue. When the following message appears, click on Yes.
10. The Load Driver window appears as shown below. Select the appropriate cellphone model and Firmware list (e.g., Select 1510C_US.336 for 33.6 kbauds) and click on load driver. The driver is downloaded into the modem flash memory. This takes from five to ten minutes. Once the driver is downloaded, there is no need to download the driver again unless you change cellphone models. CAUTION Please DO NOT cancel the download, once you have started loading the driver.
12. Once the appropriate drivers are loaded and the modem is reset, the following message appears to indicate that the firmware upgrade is complete. Click OK. Congratulations! The cellphone driver update installation for PC Card modem is complete. The AutoLine setup will automatically detect whenever you use the modem with a cellphone. So, there is no need to run the modem upgrade utility, unless you need to use a different CellPhone model.
4. Using the CellPhone with Cellphone cable Switch off the CellPhone, insert the modem PC Card in the PCMCIA slot and connect the Cellphone to the modem using the cellphone cable. Then switch on the CellPhone and Use the modem as directed in the documentation that came with the modem. If you are using the dialup networking through cellular phone, please read the following section to modify the dialup networking settings for cellular connection. 4A. Modifying Dialup Networking for Cellular Connection 1.

On the cellular connection, it is advisable to turn down the baud rate to around 19200 bps. This will allow for a more stable connection. With baud rates higher than 19200 bps, the modem has a hard time filtering out noise, which actually either slows down the modem or disconnects it. 5.

Plug the cell phone cable into the modem and into the cell phone, turn the phone on and launch your Dial-up networking account. You will see a Pre-Dial Terminal Screen, which will have a blinking cursor in the upper left-hand side.
