1. Milestone 212 layout This chapter explains Milestone’s push buttons, connectors and other tactile parts. 1.1. Layout description 1.1.1. The operating surface Hold your Milestone in front of you with the buttons facing up. You will find five buttons on its surface - a big circular button in the center surrounded by four buttons arranged in a cross shape. The round recessed button in the middle is the only one with a smooth surface devoid of tactile markers. This is the “Play” button.
1.1.3. The bottom side The bottom side only contains the headphone connector. 1.1.4. The right side On the right side of the device, you will find the SD memory card slot. 1.2. Using the interfaces The following descriptions focus on physical connection possibilities with Milestone 212. 1.2.1. Battery charging Connect the provided charger to a power outlet. Connect the other end of the charger cable to Milestone’s mini-USB connector, located in the middle of the top side.
1.2.5. SD memory card Milestone 212 uses SD and SDHC memory cards to store books and other files. SD stands for “Secure Digital”, which denotes a world-wide standard for memory cards. These memory cards are available in different memory capacities up to 32 GB. We recommend SD cards from SanDisk, Kingston, Transcend and Toshiba for trouble-free usage. You can insert an SD memory cards into the longish slot on the right side of Milestone 212. To insert the card press until it locks in.
2.4. Reading rate control To increase reading rate by one level (10%), hold down the “Selector” button and then in addition press the “Right arrow”. To decrease the reading rate use the “Selector” button with the “Left arrow”. Adjustment of reading rate is only possible while playback of a file. The range of reading rates extends from 50% (half speed) to 200% (double speed). A deep, short beep signalizes the original speed level. Further speed selections can be made in the menu. 2.5.

Deleting files and folders via computer The Milestone 212 offers ways to erase files, but often it is quicker to delete files and folders via a computer connection. Use standard operating system functions to delete files and folders from the Milestone, as it will behave just like any other computer drive.
3.1. Starting and pausing a book Make sure you are in the application “Books”. Press the “Play” button to start the reading of a book. A ticking sound signalizes that searching process started. Milestone 212 looks for books on the SD memory card. It starts the first book it can find. To pause the playback of the book press “Play” again. To select between all available books please have a look under “Selecting a book”. Attention: Please be aware that DAISY 3.0 and EPUB books require to initialize a book.
Navigation option Description Pages jump Jump to the next or previous page by pressing the arrow buttons. To enter a desired page directly push and hold “Selector” and then enter the page number using the “Left arrow”, “Play” and “Right arrow” buttons. With each push on “Left arrow” you select between the three-digit figures: 100, 200, 300 et cetera., with “Play” you select the two-digit figures 10 to 90 and with “Right arrow” you select between the single-digit figures from 1 to 9.
Bookmarks are activated in the order of their appearance in the book, not in the chronological order they were inserted. This has the advantage that when selecting bookmarks you move through the book in the reading direction. To erase a selected bookmark pause the playback. Push and hold “Mode” and then in addition press “Play”. 3.5.
4.3. Listening to a recorded voice message To listen to a voice message press “Play” after recording. If you have several messages use the arrow button to select the desired voice message. Hint: You have the possibility to jump to the last or the first file. Therefore push and hold “Right arrow” and in addition press “Play” to reach the last file or push an hold “Left arrow” and in addition “Play” to jump to the first file. 4.4.
4.6. External microphones There is a 3.5 mm jack on the right-hand side of the front edge. It can be used to connect external microphones. The microphone is powered by Milestone 212 and does not need an own amplifier. With a connected microphone Milestone 212 switches automatically from the integrated to the external microphone. Recordings are saved as MP3 files with a quality of 128 kbps. The handling stays the same as with the integrated microphone. 4.7.
5. Audio The application “Audio” enables you to listen to music or text files. Make sure it is the active application by using the “Selector” button until you hear the word “Audio”. WMA Windows Media Audio: Compressed digital audio file used by Windows Media Player.
Milestone 212 jumps to the first file or subfolder within “Music”. In our case it finds the folder “Country”. Press “Right arrow” to jump to the folder “Oldies”. Enter it with the “Mode” button. Milestone 212 opens the first music track. The files are sorted alphabetically. Finally, press “Right arrow” until you reach the track of Elvis Presley. If you want to go up again to the highest folder level, the root directory of the SD memory card, press “Rec” twice.
5.4. Deleting a file or folder Milestone 212 allows you to erase files and folders directly without a connection to the computer. This can be done in one of the following 3 ways: • Delete one file: Play the file you would like to erase. While the message is playing, hold down the “Mode” button and briefly press “Play”. The file will be erased when you let go of the buttons. A message may be erased as well after the replay has stopped. • Delete files in one direction: Pause the playback.
