Glossary of Terms ANTI-KICKBACK PAWLS Device which, when properly maintained, is designed to stop the workpiece from being kicked back at the operator during operation. KICKBACK An uncontrolled grabbing and throwing of the workpiece back toward the front of the saw during a rip type operation. ARBOR The shaft on which a cutting tool is mounted. LEADING END The end of the workpiece which, during a rip type operation, is pushed into the cutting tool first.
General Safety Rules ! WARNING “READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS” Failure to follow the safety rules listed below and other basic safety precautions may result in serious personal injury. THINK SAFETY Safety is a combination of operator common sense and alertness at all times when the X-Shop is being used. Work Area AVOID ACCIDENTAL STARTING Make sure the switch is in the “OFF” (“O”) position before plugging in tool. KEEP CHILDREN AWAY Do not let visitors contact tool or extension cord.
Tool Care If in doubt, DO NOT PLUG IN THE TOOL. Using a power source with voltage less than the nameplate rating is harmful to the motor. Use only Skil replacement parts. Any others may create a hazard. DO NOT ALTER OR MISUSE TOOL These tools are precision built. Any alteration or modification not specified is misuse and may result in dangerous conditions. AVOID GASEOUS AREAS Do not operate electric tools in gaseous or explosive atmospheres.
Check their action before ripping. The spreader aligned with the saw blade and the pawls are intended to stop a kickback once it has started. Kickbacks can cause serious injury. A “KICKBACK” occurs when a part of the workpiece binds between the blade and the rip fence or other fixed object. Workpiece binding the blade due to misalignment can also cause kickback. During kickback, workpiece rises from table and is thrown rapidly back toward the operator.
Lower the blade below table surface, remove the guard system, clamp feather boards or other fixture to hold workpiece down, and against the fence. Place the workpiece on the tabletop at the desired location. Start the saw and let it come to full operating speed then slowly raise the blade until it pierces the workpiece and then push the workpiece through the desired length. To stop the cut, shut off the saw, lower the blade and remove workpiece. Repeat as necessary to complete all sides of the pocket cut.
Router Table Safety wobbly or otherwise unstable. If the material is slightly curved but otherwise stable, cut the material with the concave side against the table or fence. Cutting the material with the concave side up or away from table may cause the warped or wobbly material to roll and kick back and cause user to lose control. The following Skil Router Models may be used with the router insert: 1810, 1815, 1820 Read and understand table and router manual and accessory warnings.
Jigsaw Safety The following Skil Jigsaw Models may be used with the jigsaw insert: Models 4280, 4380, 4390, 4480, 4540, 4580 & 4680. Make certain all adjusting screws and the blade holder are tight before making a cut. Loose adjusting screws and holders can cause the tool or blade to slip and loss of control may result. Be sure to keep both hands on the workpiece. Whenever possible use a push piece. Keep firm downward pressure to prevent workpiece from being raised from table surface.
Double Insulated Tools Double Insulation is a design concept used in electric power tools which eliminates the need for the three wire grounded power cord and grounded power supply system. It is a recognized and approved system by Underwriter’s Laboratories, CSA and Federal OSHA authorities. WHEN SERVICING, USE ONLY IDENTICAL REPLACEMENT PARTS. POLARIZED PLUGS. If your tool is equipped with a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other), this plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way.
Warning Labels WARNING ! THE WARNINGS SHOWN BELOW CAN BE FOUND ON YOUR TOOL. THESE WARNINGS ARE ONLY A CONDENSED FORM OF THE MORE DETAILED SAFETY RULES AND PRECAUTIONS THAT APPEAR IN YOUR OWNER'S MANUAL. THEY SERVE AS A REMINDER OF ALL SAFETY RULES NEEDED FOR SAFE OPERATION OF THIS TABLE SAW. ! WARNING Router Safety • For your own safety, read and understand table, router and accessory warnings and instructions before use. • Unplug power cord before assembly, adjustments or changing bit.

Adjusting Blade Parallel To The Miter Gauge Slots FIG. 43 The blade was adjusted parallel to the miter gauge slots at the factory. In order to insure accurate cuts and help prevent kickback, this adjustment should be rechecked. If adjustment is necessary, follow the steps below. If the blade is misaligned by more than 1/8", do not attempt to align or operate the saw. Have a qualified service technician perform blade alignment. ! WARNING 1. Turn elevation wheel and raise blade as high as it will go. 2.

Remove rip fence from table during any operations which utilize the miter gauge. 3/4" Make sure blade guard is installed for all “thru-sawing” operations (when sawblade cuts entirely thru the thickness of the workpiece). Replace guard IMMEDIATELY after completion of dadoing, molding or rabbeting cuts. 1/4" 1/4" Have blade extend approximately 1/8" above top of workpiece. Additional blade exposure would increase the hazard potential.
Using the Rip Fence RIPPING, BEVEL RIPPING, RESAWING AND RABBETING are performed using the RIP FENCE together with the AUXILIARY FENCE / WORK SUPPORT, PUSH STICK OR PUSH BLOCK. For your own safety, always observe the following safety precautions in addition to the safety instructions on Pages 4-10. ! WARNING 1. Never make these cuts FREEHAND (without using the rip fence or auxiliary devices when required) because the blade could bind in the cut and cause a KICKBACK. 2.

Bevel Ripping FIG.5958 FIG. When bevel ripping material 6" or narrower, use fence on the right side of the blade ONLY. This will provide more space between the fence and the sawblade for use of a Push Stick. If the fence is mounted to the left, the sawblade guard may interfere with proper use of a Push Stick. When “WIDTH OF RIP” is 6" and WIDER use your RIGHT hand to feed the workpiece, use LEFT hand ONLY to guide the workpiece … do not FEED the workpiece with the left hand (Fig. 57).
Repetitive Cutting 62 FIG. 63 REPETITIVE CUTTING is known as cutting a quantity of pieces the same length without having to mark each piece. When making repetitive cuts from a long workpiece, make sure it is supported. Never use the rip fence as a length stop because the cutoff piece could bind between the fence and the blade causing a kickback. ! WARNING 1. When making repetitive cuts, clamp a block of wood 3" long to the table at desired length to act as a length stop. (Fig.
Non Thru-Sawing “C” CLAMPS FIG. FIG. 66 67 During a Non Through Sawing a dado or regular blade does not cut through the top layer of the wood. For Non Through Sawing the spreader and the guard must be removed. Special precautions must be followed to prevent kickback and contact with the blade. Feather boards are a practical way to prevent a kickback.

ROUTING USING THE FENCE FIG. 76 JOINTING (FULL EDGE CUTTING) R2 Using a router table for jointing has several advantages over other methods, such as using a freestanding power jointer, though it cannot completely replace a power jointer. R4 • Small and short pieces of wood can be safely and successfully routed because the opening between the faces can be adjusted down to a minimum. • Because routers spin much faster than typical jointers, the cut quality is much better.
15. While firmly holding the workpiece against the fence and down against the router table, feed the workpiece toward the bit in the direction shown by the ARROW in Fig. 73. 16. Always maintain a constant force holding the workpiece against the fence and tabletop as the workpiece exits the guard. 17. Repeat the procedure until the workpiece has been “cleaned-up”. EDGE CUTTING WITH NON-PILOTED ROUTER BITS 1. Make sure that the left fence lines up with the right fence.
6. Tighten the four wing nuts holding the left and right fences in place. 7. Adjust the fence inward or outward to obtain the proper depth-ofcut. 8. Tighten the fence clamping knobs. 9. Adjust the height of the bit to obtain the desired height-of-cut. (Adjustment is made with the router.) 10. Lower the guard about 1/8” above the workpiece and tighten the knobs. 11. With the workpiece away from the bit, TURN THE ROUTER ON. 12.
8. Serrez les boutons de serrage du guide. 8. Apriete los pomos de fijación del tope-guía. 9.
