Step 5: Turn the SMARTTOOL™ vertical so the
word "UP" reads correctly. Place the SMARTTOOL™
against a vertical surface with the display toward
you until the unit beeps and flashes CAL 5 once.
Step 6: With the word "UP" still right side up,
place the SMARTTOOL™ so the display is away from
you. (steps 5 – 8 must be in the exact same spot
on the vertical surface) Wait until the unit beeps
and flashes CAL 6 once. (see fig. 4)
Step 7: Turn the SMARTTOOL™ so the word "UP" is
right side up. Place the SMARTTOOL™ against the
vertical surface with the display facing you. Wait
until the unit beeps and flashes CAL 7 once.
Step 8: With the word "UP" still right side up,
place the SMARTTOOL™ so the display is away from
you. Wait until the unit beeps and flashes CAL 8
once. The calibration is now complete.
MAINTENANCE
The following tips will ensure that your
SMARTTOOL™ is kept in top condition.
• The SMARTTOOL™ is weather and water resistant.
Should SMARTTOOL™ be splashed with mortar or
other construction site residue, lightly spray or
wipe clean with a damp cloth. Do not immerse
the SMARTTOOL™ in water.
• ABS polymer surfaces should be cleaned with a
mild liquid soap and water.
• We advise you to store SMARTTOOL™ away from
extreme temperatures below 20°F (-4°C) or
higher than 140°F (60°C).

Place battery wires in the two battery housing
slots and carefully close housing - Do not use
force. Replace in end cap.
Note: SMARTTOOL™ includes a 9-volt battery,
however, it is not connected. Before checking
your SMARTTOOL™, connect the battery. Use only
9-volt alkaline batteries.
GEN 3 CALIBRATION PROCEDURES
To read accurately, SMARTTOOL™ must be calibrated
through all eight calibration steps. If the CALIBRATE
button is pushed when SMARTTOOL™ is not near
level or plumb, the display will show " ---" and
SMARTTOOL™ will ignore the calibration attempt. If
CAL ALL appears on the display, SMARTTOOL™ needs
to be calibrated through all eight calibration steps.
Note: We recommend checking calibration daily,
after a rough fall, or if the temperature has
changed by more than 20˚ F (11˚C ) since the
previous calibration.
To check calibration, carry out the Steps 1-8
calibration procedures (WITHOUT DEPRESSING THE
CALIB ALT 0 BUTTON). If the readings vary by more
than 0.1 deg. then SMARTTOOL™ should be
recalibrated.
Step 1: Place SMARTTOOL™ on a flat surface with
the display facing you. Turn it on and push and
hold the CALIB ALT 0 button for 2 seconds until CAL
appears on the display. The current angle and "UP"
will appear alternately. Wait until the unit beeps
and flashes CAL 1 and then proceed to step 2.
Step 2: Turn the SMARTTOOL™ so the display is
facing away from you (steps 1 – 4 must be in the in
the exact same spot on the flat surface). Wait until
the unit beeps and flashes CAL 2 once. (see fig. 3)
Step 3: Turn the unit upside down so the word
"UP" now is right side up. Wait until the unit
beeps and flashes CAL 3 once.
Step 4: Turn the unit so the display is away from
you still in the upside down position. The word
"UP" should be right side up. Wait until the unit
beeps and flashes CAL 4 once.
DIGITAL DISPLAY - Display readout of current
measurement.
DIRECTIONAL LISTEN & LEVEL AUDIO
° % in/ft MODES - Indicates measurement
"mode": Degrees (˚), Slope (%), Pitch (in/ft,
digital in/ft, or mm/m).
ALTERNATE ZERO - ALT 0 allows you to set any
angle as a 0º reference. Set the new 0º by
pressing "HOLD/COPY" then "CALIB ALT 0". The
display shows "alt" then "-0-" then the new 0º.
A dot flashes above the decimal point and "alt 0"
flashes every 5 seconds while in "alt 0" mode.
Beep, º, %, and in/ft continue to function as
normal. Discontinue "alt 0" mode by pressing
"HOLD/COPY", "CALIB ALT 0", or "ON/OFF".
BACK LIGHT - Push to activate display back light.
(turns off after 1 minute to conserve battery life).
ANGLE COPY
To copy angles, place unit on angle to be copied.
Press the Hold/Copy button. Push the
Listen and Level Audio button. Level will begin
beeping. The "copy" angle will remain frozen on
the display. A beep will sound when the unit is
returned to this exact angle.
To remove the unit from the angle copy mode,
push the Hold/Copy button or the Listen and
Level Audio button. This operation will return the
unit to the regular mode.
BATTERY INSTALLATION (Battery included)
The battery is inside the endcap opposite the
plumb vial. To install the battery, remove the
endcap using a
coin or blade in
the slot provided.

pull on the battery

CONTROLS (see fig. 1)
ON/OFF - If left idle for 6 minutes, SMARTTOOL™
will automatically shut off.
HOLD - Push to "freeze" and "unfreeze" display
readings.
DIRECTIONAL LISTEN & LEVEL AUDIO Push to
activate and de-activate the beeper. Directional
Beep rate increases as 0˚, 90˚, the copied angle,
or the ALT 0 angle is approached and changes
tone when the angle is passed.
CALIBRATE (see Calibration Procedures)
MODE BUTTON - Push to change the display units:
Degrees (°), Slope (%), Pitch (in/ft, digital in/ft,
mm/m).
Pitch readings are in 1/8 in/ft increments.
Note: The °, %, pitch button can be used even
when the display is in HOLD. This feature is a
convenient way to convert angles from one unit
to another. For example a 5-3/4 in/ft roof pitch
measurement can be converted to 25.5° for
setting up cuts on a chop saw. Each + or –
indicates about 1/24 inch.
LCD DISPLAY
Display reads right side up when SMARTTOOL™ is
upside down!
UP/ DOWN ARROWS - Left and right indicators
point toward level or plumb (whichever is closer).
Indicators get shorter as SMARTTOOL™ gets closer
to level (0˚) or plumb (90˚) or copied angle.
LOW BATTERY - Low 9V battery indicator.
Replace battery as soon as possible.

ONE YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY
If within one year from the date of original
purchase, the SMARTTOOL™ fails to function
because of defects in materials or workmanship,
M-D will, at its option, either repair or replace
such components provided the original
purchaser:
1. Call 1-405-528-4411 for a Return Authorization
Number.
2. Returns the SMARTTOOL™ postage paid and
insured to M-D at the address set forth below.
M-D is not responsible for any damage incurred
to the components while in transit to M-D.
3. Include a brief explanation describing why the
SMARTTOOL™ is inoperable or how the
component was damaged.

This warranty does not cover damage resulting
from accident, misuse or abuse, water, tampering,
servicing performed or attempted by unauthorized
agencies, or units that have been modified in any
fashion. If the components do not perform as
warranted herein, the original purchaser's sole
remedy will be the repair or replacement of the
components as provided above. In no event will
M-D be liable for damages, lost revenue, lost
wages, lost savings or any other incidental or
consequential damages, domestic or international,
rising from the purchase and use or inability to use
the components, even if M-D has been advised of
the possibility of such damages. Except as provided
herein, M-D makes no warranties, express or
implied, including without limitation, the implied
warranties of merchantability and fitness for a
particular purpose, with respect to the components.
All warranties for the components, express or
implied, are limited to the warranty period set forth
above. Some states do not allow limitations on how
long an implied warranty lasts or the exclusion or
limitation of incidental or consequential damages,
so the above limitations or exclusions may not
apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal
rights. You may also have other rights, as indicated
above, which vary from state to state.
ZÉRO ALTERNATIF - Le zéro alternatif permet de
régler n'importe quel angle en tant que référence
0º. Régler le nouveau 0º en appuyant « HOLD/
COPY » (maintien) puis « CALIB ALT 0 ». L'affichage
indique « alt » puis « 0 » qui est alors de nouveau
0º. Un point clignote au dessus du point décimal
et « alt 0 » clignote tous les 5 secondes pendant
qu'il est en mode « alt 0 ». Tonalité, º, %, et po/pi
continuent de fonctionner normalement. Annuler
le mode « alt 0 » en appuyant « HOLD/COPY »
(maintien/reproduire), « CALIB ALT 0» ou « ON/OFF

RÉTROÉCLAIRAGE - Appuyer pour activer le rétroé-
clairage de l'affichage. (s'éteint après 1 minute
pour conserver la durée de la pile).
COPIE D'ANGLE
Pour copier des angles, placez l'appareil sur l'angle à
copier. Appuyez sur le bouton de Hold (Retenue).
Puis sur le bouton Son et Niveau du Son. Le
niveau commencera à émettre un signal sonore.
L'angle copié demeurera affiché. Le niveau émettra
un signal sonore indiquant que l'angle désiré a été
obtenu.
Pour désactiver le mode de copie d'angle, appuyez
sur le bouton Hold (Retenue) ou Son et Niveau
du Son. Le mode normal du niveau sera rétabli.
INSTALLATION DE LA PILE (Pile incluse) Retirer
le couvercle arrière (voir image). Attacher la pile 9
V aux bornes et remettre le couvercle. (voir fig. 2)
Utiliser uniquement des piles 9 V alcalines.
GEN 3 INSTRUCTIONS POUR LE CALIBRAGE
Pour lire précisément, le SMARTTOOL™ doit être
calibré en suivant chacune des huit étapes de
calibration. Si vous appuyez sur le bouton Calibrate
(calibrage) alors que les paramètres de niveau et
d’aplomb ne sont pas atteints, l’appareil ne sera pas
calibré et l’écran affichera "---". Si le message CAL
All s’affiche, le SMARTTOOL™ doit être calibré en
effectuant les huit étapes de calibrage.
Remarque : Il est recommandé de vérifier le
calibrage du SMARTTOOL™ tous les jours, si vous
l’échappez ou si la température a subi des variations
supérieures à 11˚ C depuis le dernier calibrage. Si la
mesure affichée varie de plus de 0,1 degré, le
SMARTTOOL™ doit être calibré de nouveau.
Étape 1 : Placer le SMARTTOOL™ sur une surface
plate en faisant face à l'affichage. Mettre en
marche et maintenir le bouton CALIB ALT 0
pendant 2 secondes jusqu'à ce que CAL s'affiche
ainsi que l'angle en cours et que « UP » (haut)
apparaissent alternativement (l'angle en cours et

ON/OFF (MARCHE/ARRÊT) - Le SMARTTOOL™
s’arrête automatiquement s’il est inutilisé pendant
6 minutes.
HOLD (RETENUE) - Appuyez sur ce bouton pour
obtenir un affichage figé ou non figé.
NIVEAU À TONALITÉ DIRECTIONNELLE
Appuyez sur ce bouton pour activer ou désactiver le
signal sonore. Le taux de la tonalité directionnelle
augmente lorsque 0˚, 90˚, l'angle reproduit ou
l'angle ALT 0 sont approchés et le son change
lorsque l'angle est dépassé.
CALIBRATE (CALIBRAGE) - (Voir Instructions pour le
calibrage)
BOUTON DE MODE - Appuyer pour changer les
unités d'affichage : Degrés (°), pente (%), inclinaison
(po/pi, po/pi numérique, mm/m). Les lectures
d'inclinaison sont en incréments de 1/8 po/pi.
REMARQUE : Le bouton d'inclinaison ° % peut être
utilisé même lorsque l'affichage est en mode
HOLD (maintien). Cette fonction est une façon
pratique de convertir les angles d'une unité à une
autre. Par exemple, la mesure de l'inclinaison d'un
toit de 5-3/4 po/pi peut être convertie à 25,5° pour
le réglage des coupes sur une coupeuse à bois.
Chaque + ou - indique environ 1/24 po.
AFFICHAGE À CRISTAUX LIQUIDES
La lecture à l'écran se fait en partant de la droite
en montant lorsque le SMARTTOOL™ est à l’envers!
FLÈCHES HAUT/BAS - Les indicateurs gauche et
droit pointent vers le niveau horizontal ou vertical
le plus près. Les indicateurs deviennent plus courts
lorsque le SMARTTOOL™ s'approche du niveau
horizontal (0˚) ou vertical (90˚) ou de l'angle
reproduit.
PILES FAIBLES - Indicateur de faiblesse de la
pile de 9 V. Remplacer les piles dès que possible.
AFFICHAGE NUMÉRIQUE - Affiche les mesures
courantes.
NIVEAU À TONALITÉ DIRECTIONNELLE
MODES ° % PO/PI - Indique le « mode » de
mesure : Degrés (°), pente (%), inclinaison (po/pi,
po/pi numérique ou mm/m).
« UP » alternent durant chacune des étapes de
calibration suivantes). Attendre que l'appareil
émette une tonalité et que CAL 1 clignote puis
procéder à l'étape 2.
Étape 2 : Tourner le SMARTTOOL™ en faisant dos à
l'affichage (les étapes 1 à 4 doivent être
exactement au même endroit de la surface plate).
Attendre que l'appareil émette une tonalité et que
CAL 2 clignote une fois. (voir fig. 3)
Étape 3 : Tourner l'appareil à l'envers de façon à
ce que le mot « UP » soit à l'endroit. Attendre que
l'appareil émette une tonalité et que CAL 3
clignote une fois.
Étape 4 : Tourner l'appareil en faisant dos à
l'affichage et toujours en position à l'envers. Le
mot « UP » devrait être à l'endroit. Attendre que
l'appareil émette une tonalité et que CAL 4
clignote une fois.
Étape 5 : Tourner le SMARTTOOL™ en position
verticale pour que le mot « UP » se lise
correctement. Placer le SMARTTOOL™ contre une
surface verticale en faisant face à l'affichage
jusqu'à ce que l'appareil émette une tonalité et
que CAL5 clignote une fois.
Étape 6 : Avec le mot « UP » toujours à l'endroit,
placer le SMARTTOOL™ en faisant dos à l'affichage.
(les étapes 5 à 8 doivent être exactement au
même endroit de la surface verticale). Attendre
que l'appareil émette une tonalité et que CAL 6
clignote une fois. (voir fig. 4)
Étape 7 : Tourner le SMARTTOOL™ pour que le mot
« UP » soit à l'endroit. Placer le SMARTTOOL™
contre une surface verticale en faisant face à
l'affichage. Attendre que l'appareil émette une
tonalité et que CAL 7 clignote une fois.
Étape 8 : Avec le mot « UP » toujours à l'endroit,
placer le SMARTTOOL™ en faisant dos à l'affichage.
Attendre que l'appareil émette une tonalité et que
CAL 8 clignote une fois. La calibration est
maintenant terminée.
ENTRETIEN
Les conseils suivants assureront le rendement
optimal du SMARTTOOL™.
• Le SMARTTOOL™ est résistant à l’eau et aux
intempéries. En cas d’éclaboussures de mortier ou
d'autres matériaux de construction, il suffit
d’essuyer le SMARTTOOL™ à l’aide d’un chiffon
humide. N'immergez pas le SMARTTOOL™ dans l’eau.
• Les surfaces en polymère ABS doivent être
nettoyées avec un savon liquide doux et de l'eau.
• Nous vous recommandons de ranger le
