En e r g y S avi n g 1 Reduce main line pressure By lowering the main line pressure you can achieve up to 30 percent savings (about 7–10 percent/bar). Create higher pressure only where needed with the help of local SMC pressure boosters and tanks. See chapter 2 for more information on VBA pressure booster. Avoid unregulated air Monitor the pressure and pressure drop using SMC pressure sensors and switches. See chapters 2 and 9 for more information on regulators and pressure switches.

A i r p r epa r atio n equ ipme n t Installation and operation SMC’s modular air treatment system enable significant advantages for warehousing, assembly and service. 2 E ach unit is equipped with connection threads and therefore can also be used for single mounting (no extra adapters needed) With only a small component stock, a machine can be equipped with both modular units and separate regulators, filter and lubricators. This also means benefits in exchange and repair.

Safety, actuators System design • Caution! 1. Pneumatic cylinders can often be linked with other moving parts, this must be taken into account when designing a system. If an external force causes a sudden movement on the part that is joined to the cylinder, the movement can cause danger of injury. 2. If the cylinder is mounted directly adjacent to an area where humans are present, use some form of protective cover for the moving parts.

If you use a 3-position valve with closed center to maintain a cylinder position, accuracy and precise stop position may be difficult to achieve because of the compressed air compressibility and a valve with zero-leakage can not be guaranteed. This is of particular importance if the valve will hold a cylinder positioned in a fixed position for a long time. Contact SMC if necessary. 3.
Safety, actuators 2. When using auto switch, it is important to ensure that it does not work near strong magnetic fields, for example, directly adjacent to a welding transformer or the like. Safety, grippers Construction Selecting grippers • Caution! • Danger! 1. The current object’s center of gravity must lie within the current gripper workspace. If the holding point’s position is offset (eccentric gripping) in relation to the finger center line (x and y direction), the force cause a backlash in the mechanism of the gripper, thereby causing shortened life time. See the appropriate measure In the charts for each gripper. H 1.
Safety, grippers Clearance 5. Choose a gripper with the required stroke length. Too short stroke can cause false signals from a position sensor when the sensor switching differential (hysteresis) falls outside the gripper workspace. 6. If a gripper is to pick up an item from something internal, ensure that there is enough space for the gripper to use its’ full stroke. 3. Choose a gripper that has a sufficiently high holding force to offset the object’s own weight.
