azine removed and holding the pistol in the shooting grip, but with the trigger finger outside of the trigger guard (e), grasp the serrated area at the rear of the slide (9) with the thumb and forefinger of the free hand and draw the slide rearward to clear the chamber of any live cartridges. Check the magazine for cartridges. If the magazine is loaded, remove the cartridges by pressing them forward toward the front end of the magazine with the thumb.
CAUTION: We recommend that the manual safety of any loaded semi-automatic pistol be kept in the "safe" position until you are actually ready to fire. This is essential for Models 39, 52 and 59, which could discharge accidentally with the manual safety in the "fire" position if these models receive an impact such as, for example, being dropped onto the muzzle. Unless you are ready to fire, do not chamber a round.
