Introduction Congratulations on buying the Syrius Portable Navigator and Fixed Speed Camera location system. This user manual aims to provide you with installation and operating instructions for the Syrius. Registering your Syrius IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ BEFORE USING YOUR SYRIUS. To enable your Syrius to locate Fixed Speed Cameras and Accident Blackspots you will have to register and download the EnigmaTM Camera Database. There are four ways to register your unit: Register Online Go to the official website www.snooperneo.co.uk and register your unit online. Your unit should normally be activated within 30 minutes of registration.
Quick Start Guide to Navigation 1. Take the Syrius outside, if you haven't already done so, so that the GPS receiver can locate your position. This may take up to 30 minutes the first time the Syrius is used. When satellite lock is achieved the screen displays your current position on its map in a '3D' navigation view. Tip: To reduce the ‘cold start’ GPS time remain stationary Your position (and direction) is indicated by the icon. 2. Bring up the main navigation menu by tapping the centre of the screen.
Tip: The default route options are set to Quickest Route. To change the route options refer to section 6 in this manual. Click and the Syrius will calculate the fastest route from your current position to your destination. This should only take a few seconds and its progress is shown on the screen. 5.
Start Up – Installing the SD Card Before using your Syrius you need to install the SD Card included with the device. The SD Card comes complete with a digital map of the UK and Ireland and is also where the EnigmaTM camera database is stored if you choose to download it. Start by pushing the ‘Batt. On/Off’ switch located on the underside of the unit to the ‘on’ position, then remove the SD card from its packaging and insert it into the SD Card slot as indicated.
Downloading the Enigma Camera Database TM Please Note: You MUST subscribe to this service before you can perform a download. Plug the charger cable into the socket on the back of the Syrius Performing a download is simple. 1. Connect the AC Power adapter to a mains plug socket and attach the other end to the Syrius in the socket marked DC 5V. 2. Power up the Syrius by pressing and holding the power button for 2 seconds and connect the computer to the Internet. 3.
Installing your Syrius The Syrius comes with a windscreen suction cup bracket so that the unit can be mounted on your vehicles windscreen. When installing your Syrius please ensure that: • The unit, with its built in GPS antenna has a clear view of the sky* • It is located in a position where you can easily view the LCD display without having to take your eyes too far from the road ahead and that you can reach the controls safely.
The unit can be powered directly either from its internal battery if it’s fully charged or powered from the cigarette lighter socket. To use the cigarette lighter socket, plug the smaller plug on one end of the power cable into the socket marked DC 5V on the back of the Syrius and plug the larger plug into the cigarette lighter socket of your vehicle. Please note that no power cable other than the one provided with the Syrius should be used.
Powering the Syrius using the built-in battery Once the Syrius has been fully charged it is ready for use. Push the ‘Batt. ON/OFF’ switch to the ‘ON’ position and press and hold the standby power switch on the left hand side of the unit for 2 seconds to activate the device. Low Battery Warning If the Syrius is powered form the internal battery and the ‘Battery Low’ warning is displayed on the screen, the Syrius has approximately 20 to 30 minutes of battery power remaining.
As the GPS engine and antenna have never been used before, the first ‘Cold’ start could take anywhere from 15 – 50 minutes to establish a satellite connection. Once initialised, subsequent start ups will take less time and eventually should take only a matter of minutes. 2 Easy Set Up 2.1 Screen settings There are a number of views for different pieces of information that can be displayed on the screen at any one time as follows:- 3D 2D or North Current time or vehicle speed.
Next touch the icon where you will see the list of options below. To change a setting select with your finger and a list of the options available will be shown next to a tick box. Simply press on the tick box to indicate which option you would like to choose. Your chosen settings will now be saved and will appear on the screen each time you use your Syrius.
3. Planning a route To enter the Navigation menu simply touch the centre of the Syrius display with your finger. 3.1 Touch the centre of the Syrius’s screen to access the menu and then press the ‘Find Post Code’ icon. Next, using the onscreen keyboard, enter the full postcode of your destination then press the button. Please Note: The button on the keyboard with no character on it is the ‘Space’ key.
User advice By subscribing to and downloading the SyriusTM Speed Camera database you will automatically be alerted to all ‘Fixed’ Cameras and other Accident Hotspots during your journey ensuring that you are always aware of the correct speed limit whilst traveling along any particularly hazardous stretches of road. 3.2 If you only know the street name and the town or city that you would like to navigate to then select this option.
3.3 To enable you to navigate easily and quickly from a previous journey or destination to your home, personalise your Syrius so that a route can be calculated by pressing just a few buttons. The first time the ‘Home’ function is used the Syrius will ask if you want to set your home location, press OK in the information window. If ‘Home’ has already been set it can be edited in My Favourites – refer to section 4 on page 25 3.3.
Finally you can enter the building number if there is one by selecting ‘House No.’ and entering the number using the keyboard. Once your Syrius has successfully found your address, press ‘Save’. Once your office address has been saved, your Syrius will be able to calculate a route to this address. 3.4.2 To calculate a route, simply press the centre of the Syrius’s display to access the menu and then select the ‘Office’ icon.
A list of your most recent routes will be shown in chronological order, use the down arrow on the right hand side of the display to scroll through the list and select the destination you would like the Syrius to navigate to. An ‘Information Of Destination’ screen will appear confirming the address you have selected. If you would like to view a map of the recent destination, press ‘Map’.
3.8.2 This option will find the nearest POI by category. Press the ‘Category’ button and enter the type of POI you would like to navigate to. As you begin to input the POI, the device will automatically prompt you with a list of possible POI’s. If you can see the name of the POI you are searching for in the lower window you can access it easily by selecting it with your finger.
3.9 This option will help you to find the nearest POI by Category within a specified radius. Press the ‘Find by Nearest POI’ icon and select the radius you would like to search within. This radius can be configured from a minimum radius of 10 miles up to a maximum radius of 60 miles from your current location and can be increased or decreased by 10 mile increments. The default setting is 30 miles.
When you can see the required target, simply press on the area of the map you would like to navigate to and the road selected will be displayed to the bottom left hand corner of the screen. If you are happy with your selection press the screen will be displayed. button and then and an ‘Information of Destination’ If you would like to view the map again, press ‘Map’. To return to the ‘Information of Destination’ page, press the return arrow located in the bottom right hand corner of the display.
To use this facility press the ‘Avoid by Range’ button and the ‘Select avoided Range’ page will be displayed. Select the distance of the range you wish to avoid using your finger. If you wish to see more range distances then press the down arrow on the right hand side of the display. Once you have selected the range you wish to avoid the Syrius will automatically re-calculate your route. Once the re-calculation is complete the summary screen is displayed.
4.1 To add an address to your ‘Favourites’, access the Menu by pressing the centre of the Syrius’s display and press the ‘My Favourite’ button at the top of the display. Next press the ‘Favourites’ icon and then press ‘Add’. You can now search for the address in a variety of ways as described in previous sections. Simply search for the address in the same way that you would if you were searching for an address to navigate to. Once you have found the address, simply press ‘Save’.
4.3 This function can be used to delete any or all of the 100 user stored locations that you can store in the Syrius. (For further information on saving new coordinates please refer to the section ‘Saving New User Points’ on page 40). 4.3.1 To delete individually stored User Points Press the centre of the Syrius’s display to enter the menu, press the ‘My Favourite’ button at the top of the display and then press the ‘User Points’ icon.
4.3.3 To delete ALL stored User Points Press the centre of the Syrius’s display to enter the menu, press the ‘My Favourite’ button at the top of the display and then press the ‘User Points’ icon. Press the button and an information box will displayed with ‘Delete All?’ with the options of ‘OK’ and ‘Cancel’ Press the ‘Ok’ button and ALL the stored recent destinations will be deleted. 4.
You can search for your office address by using one of the following options: Find by City or Find by Post Code. For instance, to find your Office address by post code simply type in your post code in full and press OK. In most cases Syrius will automatically find your full address. However in some cases you may need to enter the Road or Street name. To do this press ‘Street’ and again type in the information using the keyboard displayed.
5.1.1 The ‘Configure’ menu is used to customise the operation and appearance of your unit. To access the ‘Configure’ menu simply touch the centre of the Syrius’s display with your finger and press the ‘Configure’ button at the top of the display. 5.1.2 The Syrius enables you to save two brightness settings; one for driving during the day and one for driving at night. To set the day time brightness highlight ‘DAY’ by checking the tick box and using the and buttons to adjust the setting.
5.4 5.4.1 The ‘Setup’ function allows you to customise the visual information provided by the navigation screen. To alter any of these settings press the centre of the Syrius’s display to enter the menu then press the ‘Configure’ button at the top of the display and finally press the ‘Setup’ icon. There are number of different pieces of information that you can have displayed on the navigation screen at any one time as follows;- 5.4.1.
5.4.1.4 This option allows you to display either the estimated time of arrival (ETA) or the estimated remaining time left for your journey towards the bottom of the navigation screen. To save any of the changes press the ‘OK’ button at the bottom of the display. If you wish to keep the settings unchanged you can exit the ‘Setup’ menu by pressing the return arrow located in the bottom right hand corner of the display.
5.7 For this feature to operate you will need to subscribe to and download the EnigmaTM Database. See Registration of Syrius (Page 6) and System Requirements & Downloading (page 9) for further details. This facility allows you to personalise the camera alert settings that you will receive during operation.
5.7.4 You can choose between the following options: Yes: Provided you have selected the option to download schools on the Syrius updater software this feature enables the Syrius to alert you when you are in the vicinity of a primary school. No: Syrius will not provide alerts of Primary schools. Schools are indicated on the Syrius display by the icon To save any of the changes press the ‘OK’ button at the bottom of the display.
5.10 The 'Change map colours' option allows you to choose between the alternative colour schemes that are available for the maps used in your Syrius system (several of which are most suitable for use at night). To access this facility press the centre of the Syrius’s display to enter the menu then press the ‘Configure’ button at the top of the screen, press . Press the ‘Change Map Colour’ icon. Use the and to cycle through the different 'day colour schemes'. There are nine colour schemes to choose from.
6.0 If you would like to personalise your route, press the ‘Route Option’ button, before pressing the ‘Calculate’ button. This will give you a choice of calculating a route that takes the shortest time or the shortest distance and will also allow you to calculate a route that avoids any Toll Roads and Motorways if necessary. There are a number of different options available to enable you to select either the most efficient route for you to take or to enable you to personalise the route calculated.
The Syrius automatically recalculates the route to your selected destination. Once the recalculation is complete the summary screen is displayed. You can either click ‘Go’ to continue navigation, ‘Simulation’ to see the actual route, ‘Route Options’ to change the parameters of the route or ‘Guide’ which will list the turn by turn instructions. This screen will also tell you the distance to your destination, estimated time of arrival and the estimated time it will take to complete your journey.
The example shown is ‘Find by City’ Once you have found the address or location you would like to go to via your route, press the ‘Set’ button. A red tick is now displayed on the ‘Navigate Via Location’ button Now press the ‘Done’ button followed by the ‘Calculate’ button. If you would like to check the route calculated prior to departure press the ‘Guide’ button on the Summary screen which will give you a list of each turn by turn instruction from the start of your journey to the end. 6.
The quick access menu will drop down automatically. If no other button on the drop down box is pressed the drop down box disappears after approximately three seconds. From this Menu you can: • Zoom closer in, or zoom further out from the map. • Mute or alter the audio level • By pressing the like icon you can manipulate the map • Switch between the 2D, 3D and North views. • Switch between day and night settings • Switch off the speed camera location facility. 7.
8.0 Understanding the Mapping Screen The red line indicates the route you will be taking Distance to next junction or instruction Whilst navigating a calculated route the Syrius display will show an orange information box. This box will tell you the next road you should be travelling on and the distance to that turn. The screen will also show you either expected time of arrival or the time left to go. The distance left to your destination will also be displayed.
9.0 Speed Camera Alert Patterns To enable your Syrius to alert you to Fixed Speed Cameras and Accident Blackspots you will have to register and download the EnigmaTM Camera Database. 9.1 Fixed Safety Cameras As you approach the safety camera the unit will begin to provide both a voice alert stating the type of camera you are approaching and the fixed speed limit for that camera and a visual alert displaying the same information.
User Points are displayed on the map as Green Camera icons For the Syrius to alert you to a user point correctly the user point will need to be edited with the correct information such as the user point type and speed. (the direction is saved automatically). Please refer to 4.2.2 Editing User Points on page 40 for full editing instructions. 9.4.
Troubleshooting Downloads If you are having any difficulty in performing a download onto your Syrius unit it is advisable to refer to the checklist in Section A first before contacting us. If you are still unable to perform a download after following all of this checklist then please send an email to Syrius-technical@performanceproducts.co.uk stating the nature of your difficulty.
6. Have you installed the Syrius download software on your PC? If you have not installed the software you will not be able to perform a download to your Syrius. Once the software is installed there will be a new icon in your system tray which is located at the bottom right hand side of your desktop near the system clock.
