MS Decoder
NOTE: The MS (“midside”) recording technique consists of combining (matrixing) two signals,
typicallyfromonecardioidandonefigureofeightcondensermicrophones,tocreateastereosignal.
This signal translates easily into mono (the signal recorded from the figure of eight microphone is
phaseinvertedononeside,
sothat whensummingupintomonotheleftandrightsidescanceleach
other out, while the signal recorded from the cardioid microphone remains unaffected). It is also
possibletocontrol the stereo spread by varying the relativelevels of themidand sidecomponents.
