4.2 xHE-AAC 4 SUMMARY OF CODEC FEATURES AND APPLICATIONS
Mastering engineers may also consider taking advantage of the wider dynamic range
possible with xHE-AAC. An xHE-AAC bitstream today typically plays back at a -24 LUFS
loudness target level on a soundbar, TV set, or audio-video receiver. On mobile devices,
the target level for the same bitstream is usually -16 LUFS and moderate dynamic range
control is engaged. This allows a wider dynamic range when listening in good conditions
than might be practical for a “one size fits all” master that has to play well in all listening
conditions.
It should be noted that xHE-AAC encoding does not offer the limited backwards
compatibility that earlier AAC generations had. An xHE-AAC bitstream will not play on an
HE-AAC or AAC-LC decoder. However, the opposite case is supported – an xHE-AAC
decoder will play back any version of AAC.
