Precautions On safety • Caution – The use of optical instruments with this product will increase eye hazard. • This unit operates on 100 – 240 V AC, 50/ 60 Hz. Check that the unit’s operating voltage is identical with your local power supply. • To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not place objects filled with liquids, such as vases, on the apparatus. • Should any solid object or liquid fall into the cabinet, unplug the player and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
On handling the LCD screen • The LCD is manufactured using highprecision technology. You may, however, see tiny black points and/or bright points (red, blue, green) that continuously appear on the LCD. This is a normal result of the manufacturing process and does not indicate a malfunction. • Do not scratch the LCD or exert pressure on it. This could cause a malfunction. • Using the player in low temperature conditions may produce a residual image on the screen. This is not a malfunction.
Consideration for others Keep the volume at a moderate level. This will allow you to hear outside sounds and to be considerate to the people around you. For the customers in the U.S.A. and Canada Replace the AC power adaptor with model AC-E1020 only, if replacement is necessary. On cleaning Replace the Car battery cord with model DCC-E8 only, if replacement is necessary. xCasing Clean the cabinet, panel, and controls with a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent solution.

About this Manual • Instructions in this manual describe the controls on the monitor unit and remote. You can also use the controls on the player if they have the same or similar names as those on the monitor unit and remote.
Terms for discs Title The longest sections of a picture or a music piece on a DVD; a movie, etc., for a picture piece on a video software; or an album, etc., for a music piece on an audio software. Each title is assigned a title number enabling you to locate the title you want. Chapter Sections of a picture or a music piece that are smaller than titles. A title is composed of several chapters. Each chapter is assigned a chapter number enabling you to locate the chapter you want.
Notes on playback operations of DVDs and VIDEO CDs • Some playback operations of DVDs and VIDEO CDs may be intentionally set by software producers. Since this player plays DVDs and VIDEO CDs according to the disc contents the software producers designed, some playback features may not be available. Also, refer to the instructions supplied with the DVDs or VIDEO CDs. • CDs and VIDEO CDs may be heard louder than DVDs even at the same volume setting.

Guide to On-Screen Displays (Status Bar and Control Menu) The following explains the 2 types of on-screen displays used with this player: Status Bar and Control Menu. To change the language for the on-screen display You may change the language for the on-screen display to your desired one. See “Using the Setup Display” on page 63. Status Bar This display appears when you press the V (DISPLAY) button once while pressing the SHIFT button.

Getting Started Quick Overview Step 1: Unpacking Getting Started A quick overview presented in this chapter will give you enough information to start using the player for your enjoyment. To enjoy the various features of this player, refer to “Playing Discs” on page 25. To use this player connected to a TV or speakers, refer to “Using with Other Components” on page 50.
Inserting batteries into the remote You can control the player using the supplied remote. Insert two size AA (R6) batteries (not supplied) by matching the 3 and # ends on the batteries to the markings inside the compartment. When using the remote, point it at the remote sensor on the player. Insert the # end first. Notes • Do not leave the remote in an extremely hot or humid place. • Do not drop any foreign object into the remote casing, particularly when replacing the batteries.
A Sandwich the player with the rechargeable battery and push the rechargeable battery against the player. Push the rechargeable battery until it stops. Make sure that the edges of the rechargeable battery do not go over the catches at the top and bottom of the player. Getting Started B Fasten the screw. Hold the screw and turn it. C Connect the power cord to the AC power adaptor. D Connect the AC power adaptor to the player, and plug the power cord into an AC outlet.
Battery life When the cover of the monitor unit is open about 4 hours When the cover of the monitor unit is closed about 5 hours Measured during DVD playback in “NORMAL” sound mode, BRIGHT knob at the minimum Battery life may differ depending on the surrounding temperature or conditions under which the player is used. When the battery power becomes low The status bar automatically appears and flashes. The power is automatically turned off after a few minutes.
Step 3: Playing a Disc A Make sure the power is turned off. Securely connect the monitor unit to the player, and the headphones to the monitor unit. By connecting headphones to the i jacks on both the monitor unit and player, two people can listen together. to MONITOR B Slide OPEN to one side, and unhook the buckle to open the lid.
D Press NX. The player begins playing the disc. Adjust the brightness by turning BRIGHT. Adjust the volume by pressing VOL + or –. BRIGHT x NX VOL +/– x NX VOL +/– Depending on the disc A menu may be displayed on the monitor unit screen. If so, select the item you want from the menu and play the DVD (page 26) or VIDEO CD disc (page 27). To stop playing Press x. To take out the disc Remove the disc while pressing the pivot in the center of the tray.
z If you keep the player in pause mode or display a still picture such as a menu for 15 minutes, when the POWER indicator is flashing in green, the player is turned off automatically (Auto Power Off). To disconnect the monitor unit Pull the plug while holding the knobs on both sides of the plug. Getting Started To use the stand You may place the player on the supplied stand. Place the player facing as shown below so that the player stands stably.

Using the remote Playing Discs Resuming Playback from the Point Where You Stopped the Disc (Resume H x Play) SHIFT NX x 1 While playing a disc, press x to stop playback. “Disc will restart from current point.” appears on the screen and you can restart the disc from the point where you stopped the disc. If this message does not appear, Resume Play is not available. 1 2 Press x. Press H. Playing Discs When you stop the disc, the player remembers the point where you pressed x.
Using the remote Using the DVD’s Menu A DVD is divided into long sections of a picture or a music feature called “titles.” When you play a DVD which contains several titles, you can select the title you want using the TOP MENU button. When you play DVDs that allow you to select items such as the language for the subtitles and the language for the sound, select these items using the MENU button. Using the remote Playing VIDEO CDs with PBC Functions (PBC Playback) ./ > H X/x ENTER 1 SHIFT ./> NX v/V/ ENTER x 1 Start playing a VIDEO CD with PBC functions. The menu for your selection appears. 2 Select the item number you want by pressing v/V. 3 Press ENTER. 4 Follow the instructions in the menu for interactive operations. Refer to the instructions supplied with the disc, as the operating procedure may differ according to the VIDEO CD.
Various Play Mode Functions (Program Play, Shuffle 2 Press v/V to select (PROGRAM), then press ENTER. The options for “PROGRAM” appear. 3 Press v/V to select “SETt,” then press ENTER. The display for programming appears. 4 Press B. Now you can select a title on the DVD, or a track on the CD.
5 Select the title, chapter, or track you want to program. x When playing a DVD For example, select chapter “03” of title “02.” Press v/V to select “02” under “T,” then press ENTER. To program other titles, chapters, or tracks, repeat Steps 4 to 5. The programed titles, chapters, and tracks are displayed in the selected order. 7 Press NX to start Program Play. Program Play begins. When the program ends, you can restart the same program again by pressing NX. PROGRAM T ALL CLEAR __ 1. TITLE __ 2.
To change or cancel a program 1 2 3 1 While pressing SHIFT, press V 3 times for DVD or twice for VIDEO CD/CD during playback. The Control Menu is displayed. 2 Press v/V to select (SHUFFLE), then press ENTER. The options for “SHUFFLE” appear. Follow Steps 1 through 3 of “Creating your own program (Program Play).” Select the program number of the title, chapter, or track you want to change or cancel using v/V, then press B. Follow Step 5 for new programming.
Using the remote 2 Press v/V to select (REPEAT), then press ENTER. The options for “REPEAT” appear. 3 Press v/V to select the item. SHUFFLE CLEAR H x When playing a DVD • DISC: Repeats all of the titles. • TITLE: Repeats the current title on a disc. • CHAPTER: Repeats the current chapter. z You can also display the Control Menu by pressing DISPLAY. Use X/x instead of v/V. To return to normal play While pressing SHIFT, press VOL – (CLEAR on the remote), or select “OFF” in Step 3.

Notes • You can set A-B Repeat Play for only one specific section.
Searching for a Scene Searching for a Particular Point on a Disc (Scan, Slowmotion Play) Press or while playing a disc. When you find the point you want, press H to return to the normal speed. Each time you press or during scan, the playback speed changes. Three speeds are available. With each press the indication changes as follows: Playback direction x2B (DVD/CD only) t 1M t 2M You can locate a particular point on a disc quickly by monitoring the picture or playing back slowly.

Searching by Scene (VIEWER) You can divide the screen into 9 sub-screens and find the desired scene quickly. Notes Press ENTER. The initial scenes of titles or chapters appear. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Scanning the title, chapter, or track You can divide the screen into 9 sub-screens and display the first scene of titles, chapters, or tracks. You can also play back from the selected title, chapter, or track.
Using the remote Press DISPLAY to display the Control Menu. Use C/X/x/c instead of b/v/V/B. Displaying different angles simultaneously If various angles (multi-angles) for a scene are recorded on the DVD, you can display all of the angles recorded on the disc on the same screen, and start playback in continuous mode at the chosen angle. The angles are displayed on a screen divided into 9 sections. 38 1 While pressing SHIFT, press V 3 times during playback. The Control Menu is displayed.
Dividing a Scene into 9 Sections (STROBE PLAYBACK) Checking the Playing Time and Remaining Time You can display 9 consecutive moving pictures on the screen. When you press NX, the moving pictures pause. You can check the playing time and remaining time of the current title, chapter, or track, and the playing time or remaining time of the disc. Also, you can check the DVD/CD text recorded on the disc.

Sound Adjustments Changing the Sound 1 While pressing SHIFT, press V twice during playback. The Control Menu is displayed. 2 Press v/V to select (AUDIO), then press ENTER. The options for “AUDIO” appear. 3 Press v/V to select the desired audio signal. x When playing a DVD Depending on the disc, the choice of language varies. When 4 digits are displayed, they represent the language code. Refer to the language code list on page 77 to see which language the code represents.

You can also enjoy more powerful bass sound by emphasizing the bass-boosted sound.

xV-SUR (Virtual Surround) 5 Uses sound imaging to create virtual speakers from the sound of the front speakers (L, R) without using actual speakers. The virtual speakers are reproduced for multiple audio format, such as Dolby Digital 5.1-channel, as shown in the illustration below. This mode is effective when listening with stereo TV or active speakers.
12 (27 ) 18 (34 ) C 00:09:57 Enjoying Movies Changing the Angles If various angles (multi-angles) for a scene are recorded on the DVD, appears for about 5 seconds on the screen (page 66). This means that you can change the viewing angle. For example, while playing a scene of a train in motion, you can display the view from either the front of the train, the left window of the train, or from the right window without having the train’s movement interrupted.
Displaying the Subtitles 4 Press ENTER. 5 While pressing SHIFT, press V twice to turn off the Control Menu. If subtitles are recorded on the disc, you can turn the subtitles on and off whenever you want while playing. If multilingual subtitles are recorded on the disc, you can change the subtitle language while playing, and turn it on or off whenever you want. For example, you can select the language you want to practice and turn the subtitles on for better understanding.
Protecting Your Hearing Using Various Additional Functions (AVLS) Setting the Alarm When the preset time has elapsed, you will hear beeps from the headphones. The AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) function keeps down the maximum volume to protect your hearing. SHIFT v/V/ENTER 1 While pressing SHIFT, press ENTER. The “TIMER” display appears. TIMER 30 min. Set AVLS to “LIMIT.” 2 Press v/V to set the desired time (between 1 and 150 minutes). 3 Press ENTER.
Locking the Buttons (HOLD) To unlock the controls Slide HOLD in the direction that of opposite of the arrow. You can lock the controls on your player to prevent accidental button presses. POWER indicator Slide HOLD in the direction of the arrow. You can use the HOLD function with both the monitor unit and player. If HOLD on the player is activated, the buttons on the player is locked. If HOLD on the monitor unit is activated, the buttons on the monitor unit is locked.
Using with Other Components Connecting the TV, Amplifier, etc. You can connect the player to your TV to view the picture on the TV screen, or listen to the sound from the TV’s speakers or the speakers connected to an AV amplifier (receiver). P Before you start, turn off the power of all the components to be connected. Notes • Plug cords securely to prevent unwanted noise. • Refer to the instructions supplied with the components to be connected.
Step 2: Connecting the Video Cords Connect this player to your TV monitor, projector, or AV amplifier (receiver) using a video cord. Select one of the patterns A or B, according to the input jack on your TV monitor, projector, or AV amplifier (receiver).
Note Do not connect your player to a VCR. You may not receive a clear image on the TV screen if you pass the player signals via the VCR. VCR CD/DVD player TV Connect directly. Step 3: Connecting the Audio Cords Refer to the chart below to select the connection that best suits your system. The surround effects you will enjoy depend on the connections and components you use. Connecting to a stereo amplifier (receiver) and 2 speakers/Connecting to an MD deck or DAT deck B This connection will use your 2 front speakers connected to your stereo amplifier (receiver) for sound. If the stereo amplifier (receiver) has audio input jacks L and R only, use B-1 . If the amplifier (receiver) has a digital input jack, you may use B-2 . When connecting to an MD deck or a DAT deck, use B-2 .

C Connecting to a Dolby Surround Pro Logic decoder amplifier (receiver) and 3 to 6 speakers This connection will allow you to enjoy the surround effects of the Dolby Surround Pro Logic decoder on your amplifier (receiver). If you have an AV amplifier (receiver) equipped with a Dolby Digital, MPEG audio, or DTS decoder, refer to page 58. You can enjoy the Dolby Surround effects only when playing Dolby Surround audio or multichannel audio (Dolby Digital) discs.

Step 4: Connecting the Power Cord Plug the power cords of the player and connected components such as TV into an AC outlet. Step 5: Quick Setup Follow the steps below to make the basic settings. The on-screen displays differ depending upon the player model. Do not connect the power cord of the player to the “switched” power socket of an amplifier (receiver). Otherwise, when you turn off the power of your amplifier (receiver), the settings for the player may be lost. NX .

Otherwise no sound will be heard. Notes on playing DVDs with a DTS sound track • If you connect the player to audio component without a DTS decoder, set “DTS” to “OFF” in “CUSTOM SETUP” (page 67).
3 Settings Using the Setup Display By using the Setup Display, you can make various settings such as the language for OSD, subtitles, audio and others. For details on each Setup Display item see page 64 through 67. For an overall list of Setup Display items, see page 78. The on-screen displays differ depending upon the player model. Press v/V to select “CUSTOM,” then press ENTER. The Setup Display appears.
6 Select a setting, a desired language in this case, using v/V, then press ENTER. The setting is selected and setup is complete. xSUBTITLE (DVD only) Switches the language of the subtitles recorded on the DVD. Select the language from the displayed list.
