Startup guide 1: Checking the camera and the supplied items The number in parentheses indicates the number of pieces. 2: Preparing the battery pack 1 Insert the battery pack into the battery charger. •• Place the battery pack on the battery charger in the direction of . Slide the battery pack in the direction of the arrow as far as it will go. 2 Connect the battery charger CHARGE lamp to a wall outlet (wall socket) using the power cord (supplied). •• When charging starts, the CHARGE lamp on the battery charger will light up. When charging is finished, the CHARGE lamp and all indicators turn off.
To charge the battery with the battery pack inserted into the camera Turn off the power of the camera, and connect the USB Type-C terminal on the camera to an external power source such as a commercially available USB AC adapter or mobile battery using a USB cable. When a device compatible with USB-PD (USB Power Delivery) is connected to the camera, fast charging is possible. Startup guide Note ••USB charging is not possible from the Multi/Micro USB Terminal.
3: Inserting a memory card into the camera You can use CFexpress Type A memory cards and SD memory cards with this camera (page 82). 1 Open the memory card cover. 2 Insert the memory card into the Slot 1. •• Both Slot 1 and Slot 2 support CFexpress Type A memory cards and SD memory cards. •• Insert a CFexpress Type A memory card with the label facing the monitor, and an SD memory card with the terminal facing the monitor. Insert the card until it clicks into place.
4: Attaching a lens 1 Remove the body cap from the camera and the rear lens cap from the rear of the lens. •• When changing the lens, work quickly in a dust-free environment to keep dust or debris from getting inside the camera. Startup guide 2 While aligning the white index marks (mounting indexes), push the lens gently toward the camera. Then, turn the lens slowly in the direction of the arrow until it clicks into place.
To remove the lens Keep pressing the lens release button and turn the lens in the direction of the arrow until it stops. Lens release button Compatible lenses You can use lenses compatible with the 35 mm full-frame format or APS-C size dedicated lenses on this camera. When you use APS-C size dedicated lenses, the angle of view will correspond to approximately 1.5 times the focal length indicated on the lens.
5: Setting the language and the clock ON/OFF (Power) switch 1 Startup guide Control wheel Set the ON/OFF (Power) switch to “ON” to turn on the camera. 2 Select the desired language and then press the center of the control wheel. 3 Make sure that [Enter] is selected on the area/date/time confirmation screen, and then press the center of the control wheel. 4 Select the desired geographic location, set [Daylight Savings], and then press the center.
6: Shooting images Shooting still images (Intelligent Auto) This section describes how to shoot still images in the [Intelligent Auto] mode. In the [Intelligent Auto] mode, the camera automatically focuses and automatically determines the exposure based on the shooting conditions. 1 Set the mode dial to (Auto Mode). The shooting mode will be set to (Intelligent Auto). •• Turn the mode dial while pressing the mode dial lock release button in the center of the mode dial.
To play back images Press the (Playback) button to play back images. You can select the desired image using the control wheel. To delete displayed image Press the (Delete) button while an image is displayed to delete it. Select [Delete] using the control wheel on the confirmation screen, and then press the center of the control wheel to delete the image.
2 Press the MOVIE (Movie) button to start recording. MOVIE (Movie) button 3 Press the MOVIE button again to stop recording. To play back movies Press the (Playback) button to switch to the playback mode. Select a movie to play back using the control wheel, and press the center of the control wheel to start playback.
Basic operations Using the control wheel On the menu screen or the screen displayed by pressing the Fn button, you can move the selection frame by turning the control wheel or by pressing the top/bottom/left/right side of the control wheel. Your selection is confirmed when you press the center of the control wheel. Basic operations •• The DISP (Display Setting) and ISO ( ISO) functions are assigned to the top/right side of the control wheel.
Using the multi-selector You can move the focus area by pushing the multi-selector up/down/left/ right. You can also assign a function to be activated when you press the center of the multi-selector. •• Put your finger right on top of the multi-selector to manipulate it more precisely.
Using the mode dial Use the mode dial to select a shooting mode according to the subject and purpose of shooting. Basic operations •• Turn the mode dial while pressing the mode dial lock release button in the center of the mode dial. Shooting mode details The modes on the mode dial are divided into still image shooting modes, movie recording modes, and registration recall modes.
(A) Still image shooting modes The shooting mode you select determines how to adjust the aperture (F value) and shutter speed. Mode dial Shooting mode Description Intelligent Auto The camera shoots with automatic scene recognition. Program Auto Allows you to shoot with the exposure adjusted automatically (both the shutter speed and the aperture value). You can set shooting ISO].
The method for setting the exposure in the movie recording modes (Shooting) [Shooting Mode] depends on the MENU [Exposure Ctrl Type] setting. When [Exposure Ctrl Type] is set to [P/A/S/M Mode]: MENU (Shooting) [Shooting Mode] [Exposure Mode] or Exposure Mode] Select the desired exposure mode from among [ P/A/S/M. When [Exposure Ctrl Type] is set to [Flexible Exp.
Using the MENU button The menu screen is displayed by pressing the MENU button. You can change settings related to all of the camera operations including shooting and playback, or you can execute a function from the menu screen. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Menu tab Menu tabs are categorized by usage scenario, such as shooting, playback, network settings, etc. Menu group In each tab, menu items are grouped by function. The number assigned to the group is the serial number in the tab.
Basic operations on the menu screen Press the MENU button to display the menu screen. Relationship between the mode dial and menu screen The menu groups and menu items displayed in the [Shooting], [Exposure/Color], and [Focus] tabs vary depending on the mode dial setting. Using the C (custom) buttons If you assign frequently used functions to the custom buttons (C1 to C4) in advance, you can quickly call up those functions simply by pressing the button during shooting or playback. Recommended functions are assigned to the custom buttons by default. Basic operations To check/change the functions of the custom buttons You can confirm the function currently assigned to each custom button via the following procedure.
Using the Fn (Function) button If you press the Fn (function) button during shooting, a menu (function menu) containing frequently used functions such as the Drive Mode and Focus Mode is displayed on the screen, allowing you to quickly call up the functions. Example of function menu The displayed items differ depending on the camera status. Hint ••Use MENU (Setup) [Operation Customize] [Fn Menu Settings] to register your favorite functions in the function menu.

Using the Fn button in the [For viewfinder] display If you press the Fn button while the monitor display is set to [For viewfinder], you can directly operate items you want to change. To adjust settings from the dedicated setting screens Select the icon for the desired function and then press the center of the control wheel. The dedicated setting screen for the function will appear. Follow the operating guide to adjust settings. Operating guide Note ••Items that are grayed out on the [For viewfinder] screen cannot be changed by pressing the Fn button.
Using the DISP (Display Setting) button By pressing the DISP (Display Setting) button, you can change the content displayed on the screen during shooting and playback. The display switches each time the DISP button is pressed. The viewfinder display and the monitor display for shooting can be set separately. Basic operations Hint ••The monitor can be turned off with the DISP button. Add a check mark (Setup) [Operation Customize] to [Monitor Off] under MENU [DISP (Screen Disp) Set] [Monitor].
During shooting (Viewfinder) Level No Disp. Info. Histogram Level •• To switch the information displayed on the viewfinder, press the DISP button while looking into the viewfinder. During playback (Monitor/Viewfinder) Display Info. Histogram No Disp. Info. Display Info. •• If the image has an overexposed or underexposed area, the corresponding section will blink on the histogram display (overexposed/ underexposed warning). •• The settings for playback are also applied in [ Auto Review].
Using the shooting functions Focusing Selecting the focus method (Focus Mode) Selects the focus method to suit the movement of the subject. Focus mode dial Focus mode dial lock release button AF-S (Single-shot AF): The product locks the focus once focusing is complete. Use this when the subject is motionless. Using the shooting functions Turn the focus mode dial while pressing the focus mode dial lock release button and select the desired mode.
Focus indicator (lit): The subject is in focus and the focus is locked. (flashing): The subject is not in focus. (lit): The subject is in focus. The focus will be adjusted continuously according to the movements of the subject. (lit): Focusing is in progress.
Selecting the focus area ( Focus Area) Set the type of focusing frame when shooting with the auto focus. Select the mode according to the subject. MENU (Focus) [Focus Area] [ desired setting. Focus Area] Zone: Select a zone on the monitor on which to focus, and the product will automatically select a focus area. Center Fix: Focuses automatically on a subject in the center of the image. Use together with the focus-lock function to create the composition you want.
Note ••[ Focus Area] is locked to [Wide] in the following situations: ––[Intelligent Auto] ••The focus area may not light up during continuous shooting or when the shutter button is pressed all the way down at once. ••When the mode dial is set to (Movie) or (S&Q Motion), or during movie shooting, [Tracking] cannot be selected as the [ Focus Area]. Examples of the focusing frame display The focusing frame differs as follows.

To track the subject temporarily (Tracking On) You can temporarily change the setting for [ Focus Area] to [Tracking] while you press and hold down the custom key to which you have Focus Area] setting before you assigned [Tracking On] in advance. The [ activated [Tracking On] will switch to the equivalent [Tracking] setting.
[ The camera will detect faces/ eyes with greater priority. Face/Eye Prior. in AF] function [Eye AF] via a custom key The camera will detect faces/ eyes exclusively. Advance preparation •• Select Face/Eye Prior. in AF] [ [On] (page 53). •• Select [Face/Eye Subject] [Human]. Assign [Eye AF] to the desired key using Custom Key Setting] or [ [ Custom Key Setting]. How to perform [Eye AF] Press the shutter button halfway down. Press the key to which you have assigned the [Eye AF] function*.
(Note: When you try to focus on eyes by pressing the shutter button halfway down, the camera only detects faces or eyes inside or around the Focus Area]. If the camera detects no faces focus area designated with [ or eyes, it performs normal auto-focusing.) Shooting with drive modes (continuous shooting/self-timer) Select the appropriate mode for the subject, such as single shooting, continuous shooting or bracketing shooting. 1 Select the desired drive mode by turning the drive mode dial. Single Shooting: Normal shooting mode. Cont. Shooting: Shoots images continuously while you press and hold down the shutter button (page 38).

Touch functions when shooting You can use two different touch functions when focusing with this camera. Touch Focus You can specify where to focus using touch operations. Touch Tracking The camera maintains focus on the subject that was touched on the monitor. The camera continues tracking even if the subject moves. For details on the touch functions, refer to the “Help Guide.” Using the shooting functions Touch pad operations There are two kinds of touch operations for this camera.
Using a smartphone and a computer Transferring images to a smartphone You can transfer images to a smartphone by connecting the camera and a smartphone via Wi-Fi. : Operations performed on the smartphone : Operations performed on the camera 1 : Install Imaging Edge Mobile on your smartphone. To connect the camera and your smartphone, Imaging Edge Mobile is required. Install Imaging Edge Mobile to your smartphone in advance.
3 : Scan the QR Code displayed on the camera while the [Connect using the camera QR Code] screen is displayed on the smartphone. : MENU (Network) [Smartphone Connect] [ Select on Cam & Send] [ Send] Select the images you want to transfer. Managing and editing images on a computer By connecting the camera to a computer using a USB cable or inserting the camera’s memory card into the computer, you can import recorded images to the computer. You can perform remote shooting from a computer, and adjust or develop RAW images recorded with the camera by using the software suite Imaging Edge Desktop. For details on the computer software, refer to the following URL: https://www.sony.
Finding functions from MENU List of MENU items For details on how to use the menu, see “Using the MENU button” (page 20). The displayed menu items vary depending on the position of the mode dial (page 17). In the tables below, the modes in which each menu item is displayed are indicated by the still image/movie icons. ••When the mode dial is set to 1, 2, or 3 ( Recall Camera Setting), the displayed menu items are determined by the mode registered to each registration number.
S&Q Settings Proxy Settings Shooting Changes the settings for slow-motion and quick-motion movie shooting. Records low-bit-rate proxy files simultaneously. Sets whether or not to record with the angle of view of the APS-C size for still images and Super35mm size for movies. Long Exposure NR Sets noise reduction processing for shots with a shutter speed of 1 second or longer. High ISO NR Sets noise reduction processing for high-sensitivity shooting.
Create New Folder Creates a new folder on the memory card for recording still images. IPTC Information Writes IPTC information when recording still images. Copyright Info Sets copyright information for still images. Write Serial Number Writes the camera’s serial number to the Exif data when recording still images. File Settings Sets file numbers and file names for movies to be recorded.
Bracket Settings Sets self-timer shooting in the bracket mode as well as the type of bracket and the shooting order for exposure bracketing or white-balance bracketing. Interval Shoot Func. Configures settings for interval shooting. Pixel Shift Multi Shoot. Creates images with a higher resolution than is possible with regular shooting by recording four or sixteen RAW images and then combining them on a computer. This is helpful when shooting still subjects such as works of art or architecture.
Audio Level Display Sets whether to display the audio level. Time Code Preset Sets the time code. User Bit Preset Sets the user bit. Time Code Format Sets the recording method for the time code. (Only when [NTSC/PAL Selector] is set to NTSC.) Time Code Run Sets the count up format for the time code. Time Code Make Sets the recording format for the time code on the recording medium. User Bit Time Rec Sets whether or not to record the time as a user bit.
Grid Line Type Selects a grid line type from among [Rule of 3rds Grid], [Square Grid], and [Diag. + Square Grid]. Live View Display Set. Sets whether to apply settings such as exposure compensation to the live view display. Emphasized REC Display Sets whether or not to display a red frame around the edges of the camera’s monitor while recording a movie. Marker Display Marker Display Sets whether to display markers on the monitor when recording movies.
ISO AUTO Min. SS If you select [ISO AUTO] when the shooting mode is [Program Auto] or [Aperture Priority], you can set the shutter speed at which the ISO sensitivity starts changing. Auto/Manual Swt. Set. When recording movies, you can switch the auto/manual setting of the aperture value, shutter speed, and the ISO sensitivity independently. You can use this function just like the exposure control system of a professional video camera.
AEL w/ Shutter Sets whether to lock the exposure when the shutter button is pressed halfway down. This is useful when you want to adjust the focus and exposure separately. Flash Mode Sets the flash settings. Flash Comp. Adjusts the intensity of flash output. Exp.comp.set Sets whether to reflect exposure compensation value to flash compensation. Wireless Flash Sets whether to shoot with the wireless flash. Flash Sync Spd. Prty.
Color/Tone Analyzes the contrast of light and shadow between the subject and the background by dividing the image into small areas, and creates an image with the optimal brightness and gradation. Creative Look Selects the desired image processing ([VV] / [PT], etc.). You can also make detailed adjustments to parameters such as contrast, saturation, and sharpness. Picture Profile Changes settings such as color and tone when recording images. * This function is for skilled movie creators.
Aperture Drive in AF Changes the aperture drive system to prioritize the auto-focusing tracking performance or to prioritize silence. AF w/ Shutter Sets whether to perform auto focusing when the shutter button is pressed halfway down. This is useful when you want to adjust the focus and exposure separately. Pre-AF Sets whether or not to perform auto focus before the shutter button is half pressed.
Area Disp. dur Tracking Sets whether or not to always display the focusing frame when shooting with Focus Area] set to [Tracking]. [ AF-C Area Display Sets whether or not to display the focus area in [Continuous AF] mode. Phase Detect. Area Sets the area display for phase detection AF. Sets whether to allow the focusing frame to jump from one end to the other when you move the focusing frame. AF Frame Move Amt Sets the distance by which the focusing frame is moved.
Focus Magnif. Time Sets the length of time the image will be shown in an enlarged form. Initial Focus Mag. Sets the initial magnification scale when using [Focus Magnifier]. AF in Focus Mag. Initial Focus Mag. Sets whether or not to autofocus when an enlarged image is being displayed. While the enlarged image is being displayed, you can focus within a smaller area than the [Spot]. Sets the initial magnification scale when using [Focus Magnifier].
Selection/Memo Protect Protects recorded images against accidental erasure. Rating Assigns rating to recorded images on a to . scale from Rating Set(Custom Key) Sets the rating (number of ) that can be selected using the custom key to which [Rating] has been assigned with Custom Key Setting]. [ Voice Memo Records, plays back, and deletes voice memos. Voice Memo Play Vol. Sets the playback volume for voice memos. Delete Deletes images.
Play Speed for Interval Slide Show Sets the playback speed when continuously playing back still images Interval]. with [Cont. Play for Plays a slide show. Playback Option Image Index Displays multiple images at the same time. Display as Group Sets whether or not to display images shot continuously or shot using interval shooting as a group. Display Rotation Sets the playback orientation for images shot vertically. Focus Frame Display Sets whether to display the focus frame during playback.
Transfer/Remote FTP Transfer Func. Sets image transfer using FTP and executes it. * Basic knowledge of FTP server is required. PC Remote Function Configures settings for PC remote shooting. Bluetooth Rmt Ctrl Sets whether or not to use a Bluetooth remote commander. Location Information Sets whether or not to obtain location information from a paired smartphone.
Pairing Pairs the camera with a Bluetooth device. When the camera is connected to a paired device, the name of the device is displayed. Disp Device Address Displays the BD address of the camera. Wired LAN IP Address Setting Selects the method for obtaining the IP address of a wired LAN. Display Wired LAN Info. Displays wired LAN information for this camera such as the MAC address or IP address, etc.
Reset/Save Settings Setting Reset Restores settings to their defaults. Select [Initialize] to restore all settings to their default values. Save/Load Settings Saves the camera settings to a memory card, or reads saved settings from the memory card. Operation Customize Assigns functions to the various keys so that you can perform operations more quickly by pressing the keys when shooting still images.
Dial Customize My Dial Settings Assigns the desired functions to the dials and the control wheel, and register up to three combinations of settings. Av/Tv Assign in M Sets the functions of the front and rear dials when the camera is in the manual exposure mode. The dials can be used for adjusting the shutter speed and aperture value. Av/Tv Rotate Sets the direction of turning the front or rear dial or the control wheel to adjust the aperture value or shutter speed.
Finder/Monitor Sets the method of switching between the finder/monitor displays. Monitor Brightness Adjusts the brightness of the screen. Viewfinder Bright. Sets the brightness of the viewfinder. Finder Color Temp. Sets the color temperature of the viewfinder. Viewfinder Magnifi. Sets the magnification scale of the viewfinder. Display Quality Sets the display quality. •• When [High] is selected, the battery is consumed more quickly.
Auto Review Sets auto review to display the captured image after shooting. Power Setting Option Auto Monitor OFF Sets whether or not to turn off the monitor automatically when there are no operations for a certain period of time. Power Save Start Time Sets the time intervals to automatically switch to power save mode. Auto Power OFF Temp. Sets the camera temperature at which the camera turns off automatically during shooting. When shooting in hand-held mode, set to [Standard].
External Output HDMI Resolution Sets the resolution for outputting images to a TV via HDMI when shooting still images or during playback. HDMI Output Settings Sets the parameters for outputting images to other devices via HDMI when recording movies. Sets whether or not to output shooting information when the camera is connected to other devices via HDMI.
Sort Item Sorts the menu items added to (My Menu). Delete Item Deletes menu items added to (My Menu). Delete Page Deletes all the menu items on a page in (My Menu). Delete All Deletes all the menu items added to (My Menu). Display From My Menu Sets whether or not to display the My Menu first when the MENU button is pressed. Note ••The order in which the menu tabs are listed here differs from the actual display.

Diopter-adjustment dial Adjust the diopter-adjustment dial according to your eyesight until the display appears clearly in the viewfinder. If it is hard to operate the diopter-adjustment dial, remove the eyepiece cup before operating the dial.
Top side Mode dial (17) The mode dial is unlocked while you hold down the unlock button at the center. Rear dial You can quickly adjust the settings for each shooting mode. Exposure compensation dial Pressing the lock button at the center switches the exposure compensation dial between the locked and unlocked status. The dial is unlocked when the lock button is popped up and the white line is visible.
•• If the subject is closer than the minimum shooting distance of the lens, the focus cannot be confirmed. Make sure you put enough distance between the subject and the camera. Notes on the cable protector Use the cable protector to prevent a cable from being disconnected when shooting images with the cable connected. To attach the cable protector Open the headphone terminal cover, HDMI terminal cover, and Multi/Micro USB terminal cover. Fit the hook of the cable protector into the notch below the USB Type-C terminal, and attach it so that it covers the terminal surface of the unit while pressing down to keep it from coming off.

Notes on the monitor and electronic viewfinder ••The monitor and electronic viewfinder are manufactured using extremely high-precision technology, and over 99.99% of the pixels are operational for effective use. However, there may be some small black dots and/or bright dots (white, red, blue or green in color) that constantly appear on the monitor and electronic viewfinder. These dots are normal due to the manufacturing process and do not affect the images in any way.
Notes on shooting with an external flash Notes on discarding or transferring this product to others When shooting with an external flash, light and dark stripes may appear on the image if the shutter speed is set to faster than 1/4000 seconds. When discarding or transferring this product to others, make sure to perform the following operation to protect private information.
