Features of this unit Remote control with large LCD screen The remote control’s two-way communication capability and large LCD screen allows you to view the various information and operation status of the main unit close at hand, while controlling operations. Listening to the audio data stored on a computer (Home Network function) This unit supports the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standard.

Operating Instructions (this manual) This manual provides full explanations of the various settings, operations and the network connection procedure. This manual also contains precautions for the safe use of the unit. Setup Guide (1) This manual explains how to connect the antennas and power cord, install the supplied software, and set up the network connection.
Guide to parts and controls Remote control CHARGE indicator Lights up while the remote control is being charged on the charger. The indicator turns off when charging has completed (page 15). Display window For details on the contents of the display, see page 12. (stop) button Use to stop an operation (playback, recording, etc.). (play/pause) button Use to start or pause playback. HOME button Use to display the HOME menu (page 12). BACK button Use to go back to the previous display.
Main unit CD slot Insert a disc into this slot (page 25). (power) button Turns the power on or off. PHONES jack Use to connect headphones. AUDIO IN jack Use to connect the audio output jack of an external component (page 37). ON/STANDBY indicator The color indicates the unit’s power status. Green: The unit is on. Red: The unit is in Power Save standby mode (page 49). Amber: The unit is in Quick Start-up standby mode (page 49).
Display window This section introduces display windows that are frequently used. Home menu Appears when you press the HOME button. In this menu, you can select a function with the /// buttons. Press the ENTER button to enter the selected function. → → → This icon flashes when data from a server is being received and played back, as shown in the illustrations above. Battery indicator Shows the approximate remaining battery power.
Getting started Connecting the unit Getting started Connecting the antennas and power cord (main unit) DAB wire antenna To a wall outlet FM wire antenna WARNING DO NOT plug the power cord to a wall outlet until all other connections have been made.
1 Connect the AM loop antenna (aerial). 3 Connect the DAB wire antenna (aerial) (UK model only). DAB wire antenna Use an external DAB antenna (aerial) for a more robust DAB signal. It is recommended you only use the supplied DAB wire antenna for areas of strong DAB reception or as a temporary measure until you install an optional external antenna. Use a 75 coaxial cable with male F type connector to connect the unit to an external antenna. Ensure the antenna is fully extended.
Connecting the AC power adaptor (remote control) 1 Connect one end of the AC power adaptor to the DC IN jack of the charger and the other end to a wall outlet. When you charge the remote control, demonstration images will appear on the display 60 seconds after charging starts. (By default, the display on the remote control lights up and the demonstration images are displayed when the unit is turned off.) To cancel the demonstration, see “Cancelling automatic demonstration” (page 24).
Preparing a computer to use as a server (VAIO Media plus) A server is a device which delivers content to a DLNA-compatible playback device on a home network. By installing the supplied VAIO Media plus software (which has a DLNA compliant server function) on your computer, you can enjoy audio data stored on the computer with this unit via your wireless network. For details on the operation of the VAIO Media plus software, refer to the “Help” of the VAIO Media plus software.
Installing the VAIO Media plus software on your computer 1 2 If the firewall function in commercially available software is enabled on your computer, VAIO Media plus may not work correctly even after the initial setup is completed. In case this happens, refer to the “Help” of the VAIO Media plus software. Getting started To use VAIO Media plus as server software, install the VAIO Media plus software provided on the supplied CD-ROM on your computer.
Connecting the unit to your home network (network setting) After you have installed VAIO Media plus on your computer, carry out the network settings to connect the unit to your computer. If you have any trouble with the network connections, consult the “Troubleshooting” section (page 54). Setting up the unit to connect to your home network Note You may encounter setup difficulties if the unit and the wireless router/wireless LAN access point are located too far from each other.
6 Enter the Network key (security key), and then press and hold ENTER. 7 Select [Full automatic] from the Address Setting display. Use the following buttons if you are required to enter characters or a text string during the setup. Buttons / / ENTER Tip If you select [Custom] to set the Address Setting manually: See “When you select [Custom] for the Address Setting” (page 20). 8 When “Switch network settings to manual.” appears, select [OK].
When you select [Custom] for the Address Setting If you select [Custom] to input the address setting manually (step 7 in the “Setting up the unit to connect to your home network” on page 19), do the following operation. 1 2 3 4 Select [Custom] in step 7 of “Setting up the unit to connect to your home network” on page 19. Set the IP Address Setting. Select [Auto (DHCP)] or [Manual]. Auto (DHCP) The unit automatically sets the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.
If you have the Sony “GIGA JUKE” Music Server and are using Instant (S-IWS) connection to connect to your home network, you can use Instant (S-IWS) connection to set up the wireless network. 1 Select [Settings] from the Home menu. Setting up a proxy server manually You may have to set up a proxy server, depending on the specifications of your Internet provider or the network settings. 1 Settings menu appears. 2 Select [Network Setting]. 3 Select [Proxy Setting] – [On]. Settings menu appears.
Selecting the display language English, French, German, Italian or Spanish may be selected for the display language. 1 Select [Settings] from the Home menu. Settings menu appears. 2 Select [Remote Control] – [Language]. The display for selecting the language appears. 3 Select the desired language, and then press ENTER. Display English Français Deutsch Italiano Español (: Factory setting) Selectable language English French German Italian Spanish The display appears in the selected language.
Setting the clock Note The unit is factory set to start playing demonstration automatically if no operation is performed for about 60 seconds. To disable the automatic demonstration, set the clock. 1 To cancel the procedure Getting started The time must be correctly set on the clock for the correct operation of some features. Do the procedure below to set the clock. Select [Cancel] in step 6, or press HOME. To go back to the previous display Press BACK. Select [Settings] from the Home menu.
Cancelling automatic demonstration The display on the remote control is factory set to automatically light up and playback demonstration images when the power is turned off. To disable automatic demonstration, do the following. 1 Select [Settings] from the Home menu. Settings menu appears. 2 3 Select [Common Setting] – [Demonstration]. Select [Off ]. To start the automatic demonstration, select [On]*1.
Operations Playing a CD Track name or file name Artist name Operations This unit can play audio CDs and CD-R/RW discs recorded with MP3 audio tracks. See page 66 for details on playable discs. Insert a disc with the label side facing forward. When you insert a disc, playback starts automatically.

Find a point in a track/file Press and hold / during playback, and release it at the desired point. Select a track/file Press / to select a track/file. Select a folder (MP3 disc only) Eject the disc Press / to select a folder. Press . Press on the main unit.
Listening to the radio HOME BACK //// ENTER OPTIONS 3 Perform tuning. For automatic tuning: Press OPTIONS to enter the Options menu, select [Tuner Setting] – [Tuning Mode] – [Auto]*1, press BACK twice, and then press /. Scanning stops automatically when a station is tuned in and then “Tuned” and “Stereo” (for stereo program only) appear in the display.

The reception will no longer be stereo, but it will be clearer. To change back to stereo reception, do the same procedure and select [Auto].
Presetting FM/AM/DAB* radio stations By presetting FM, AM, or DAB* stations, you can easily reselect them by using the corresponding preset number. You can preset up to 20 FM or DAB stations and up to 10 AM stations. 1 3 Select the preset memory. Press OPTIONS to enter the Options menu, select [Tuner Setting] – [Preset Memory]. Press / to select a preset number, and then press ENTER. If another station is already assigned to the selected preset number, the station is replaced by the new station.
Playing an iPod You can operate your iPod with the remote control and listen to music and other audio content stored on your iPod. See “iPod models that are compatible with this unit” (page 69) for iPod models that can be connected to this unit. 3 Select a track browsing iPod menus on the remote control display. Example: Selecting a track from [Playlists] Press / to select [Playlists] from the iPod menu, and then press ENTER. Press / to select the desired playlist, and then ENTER.
Other operations Do the following: Scroll up/down the iPod menus Press /. You can scroll up or down the iPod menus much like the Click Wheel operations of the iPod or the drag up or down operations of the iPod touch. Select a page Press / while an iPod menu is displayed. Select a track or chapter of audiobook/podcast Choose the selected item Press / while the playback display appears.
Notes If no operation has been performed for 60 seconds while an iPod menu is displayed and the playback sound is being output in the background, any menu display will be replaced by the playback display. When placing or removing the iPod, handle the iPod in the same angle as that of the iPod connector on the unit and do not twist or sway the iPod to prevent connector damage. Do not carry the unit with an iPod set on the connector. Doing so may cause a malfunction.
Listening to the Internet radio BACK 1 2 3 Tip If the standby mode is set to “Quick Start-up”, the radio station that was playing when the unit is turned off will start playing again when the unit is turned on again. (The standby mode is factory set to “Power Save”. To save the information of the last radio station even when the unit is turned off, change the standby mode to “Quick Start-up”. For details on standby mode setting, see page 49.
Playing audio data stored on a computer This unit can play audio data that is stored on a computer that supports the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standards. Before playing audio data, the supplied VAIO Media plus software must be installed on your computer and the unit must be connected to the computer through a wireless LAN network (wireless router/wireless LAN access point).
To change the play mode Tip If the standby mode is set to “Quick Start-up”, the track on the computer that was playing when the unit is turned off will start playing again when the unit is turned on again. (The standby mode is factory set to “Power Save”. To save the information of the last track played even when the unit is turned off, change the standby mode to “Quick Start-up”. For details on standby mode setting, see page 49.) Notes You can change the play mode during playback or play-paused.
4 When “Disconnect from the current server.” appears, select [OK]. The unit is disconnected from the server and a list of servers appears. The icon next to the server name indicates the server type. Icon No icon 5 Server type This is a server you have connected to before and which is presently operating. This is a server you have connected to before, but which is presently not operating or not recognizable. This is a server you have never connected to before.
Listening to audio material from an external component (Audio In) 1 2 To the AUDIO IN jack 3 4 Audio connecting cable (optional) with stereo mini plug on each end 5 Press – on the remote control to turn the volume down to its lowest level. Prepare the sound source. Operations You can listen to the playback sound from an external component (such as a cassette deck) connected to the AUDIO IN jack on the unit.
Before using a USB device with this unit For details on the compatible USB devices, refer to the customer support site of Sony Europe, http://support.sony-europe.com/ Notes When USB cable connection is necessary, connect the USB cable supplied with the USB device. Refer to the operating manual supplied with the USB device for details on the operation method. It may take about 10 seconds before “Reading” appears depending on the type of USB device connected.
Playing audio data stored on a USB device *1 Files with copyright protection (Digital Rights Management) cannot be played by this unit. Files downloaded from Internet websites (including online music stores) may not be played by this unit. *2 Only audio files can be played by this unit. Movie files cannot be played. 3 Select the USB function from the Home menu. Press . Playback starts. Other operations To Stop playback Do the following: Pause playback Press . Press again to resume playback.
To change the play mode You can change the play mode while playback is stopped. Press OPTIONS to enter the Options menu, select [Play Mode], and then select the desired play mode. Play mode Description Continue The unit plays all of the files in the USB device in sequential order. Folder Continue The unit plays the files in the selected folder in sequential order. Shuffle The unit plays all of the files in the USB device in random order..
Transferring or recording audio data to a USB device 4 5 A maximum of 5 memories are displayed ([No. 1] to [No. 5]). Press ENTER. The unit changes to the USB function automatically. Tip HOME Select the memory to which audio data is to be transferred/recorded. Operations You can connect an optional USB device to the (USB) connector on the unit and transfer/record audio data to the USB device. //// ENTER OPTIONS You can select the memory during the USB function.
Transferring audio data from a disc to a USB device You can transfer audio data from an audio CD (CD-DA) or MP3 disc only. The amount of free space required on the USB device is about 1 MB per minute when transferring audio data from an audio CD. Required free space may be larger when transferring audio data from an MP3 disc. You can easily transfer all the tracks/files on a disc to a USB device (CD-SYNC). You can also transfer a track/file that is currently being played back (REC 1).
Folder and file generation rules When first transferring audio data to the USB device, a “MUSIC” folder is created directly below the “ROOT” folder. Folders and files are generated within this “MUSIC” folder as follows. 4 Note Select [Record to USB]. A confirmation message appears and the USB device stands by for recording. Note It may take a while for the USB device to be ready for recording. Therefore, it is recommended that you allow enough time not to miss any recording opportunity, especially when recording from the tuner. 5 Select [OK]. When recording from an external component (Audio In), start playback the source before selecting [OK]. Recording starts.
Setting the sound quality Tip HOME BACK // ENTER Selecting a sound style You can select the sound style from six preset equalizer settings to match the genre of music. 1 2 3 Operations You can select the sound style even when a function is selected. Press OPTIONS during any function to enter the Options menu, select [Sound] – [Sound Effects], and then select the sound style. Select [Settings] from the Home menu. Select [Sound] – [Sound Effects].
Using the timer To cancel the procedure Press HOME. To go back to the previous display +/– HOME BACK //ENTER Press BACK. Tips You can set the Sleep Timer even when a function is selected. Press OPTIONS during any function to enter the Options menu, select [Sleep Timer], and then select the time interval. If you set both Sleep Timer and Play Timer at the same time, the Sleep Timer takes priority.
Using the Play Timer You can set the Play Timer to start playing a radio program, an iPod, a USB device, or a CD at a specified time (Play Timer function). Make sure you have set the clock. 1 3 4 Select the sound source (radio, iPod, USB device, or CD), and then press +/– to adjust the volume. Select [Settings] from the Home menu. Press BACK. Notes The Play Timer is erased if you disconnect the power cord of the main unit.
Viewing the unit’s information You can view the various settings. To view the settings, do the following operation. Item Firmware Version Device ID Description You can check the firmware version of the unit. You can check the device ID that is used for the Internet radio. To cancel the procedure Press HOME. HOME // ENTER BACK 1 2 3 Select [Settings] from the Home menu. Select [Device Information]. Select the item you want to view.
Setting the standby mode You can select the power status of the unit while it is in standby mode. // ENTER BACK 1 2 3 Select [Settings] from the Home menu. With this setting, the unit is fast to respond when you turn on the unit, but the power consumption in standby mode is high.
Changing the remote control settings Changing the backlight status You can specify how long the display backlight stays on when the remote control is on or off the charger. HOME BACK //ENTER To set the backlight status when the remote control is on the charger 1 2 Changing the display brightness 3 4 Select [Settings] from the Home menu. Select [Remote Control] – [Backlight Timer]. Select [On-charger]. Select [Always On] or [Auto Off (60sec)].
To set the backlight status when the remote control is not on the charger 1 2 3 4 Select [Settings] from the Home menu. Select [Remote Control] – [Backlight Timer]. Select [Off-charger]. Select [30 seconds], [60 seconds]*1, or [90 seconds]. *1 Factory setting Operations The backlight turns off after the selected duration has elapsed. To cancel the procedure Press HOME. To go back to the previous status Press BACK. Turning off the beep sound 1 2 3 Select [Settings] from the Home menu.
Troubleshooting Troubleshooting If a problem occurs while operating the unit, follow the steps described below before consulting your nearest Sony dealer. If an error message appears, it is recommended that you make a note of its contents for reference. 1 2 3 Check to see if the problem is listed in this “Troubleshooting” section. Check the customer support site of Sony Europe at http://support.sony-europe.com/ (for customers in Europe only).
The ON/STANDBY indicator remains lit after you unplug the power cord. When the unit is turned on, the display on the remote control goes black. The ON/STANDBY indicator may not turn off Touch any buttons on the remote control to turn the immediately after you unplug the power cord. This is not a malfunction. The indicator will turn off after 40 seconds. Remote control display on. Sound output There is no sound. “Low battery. Please charge the remote control.” appears.
VAIO Media plus Network connection The installation was not successful. Manual connection The OS does not support this software (page 16). There is not enough free space on your hard disk “Correct IP address is not assigned.” appears on the display. (page 16). Make sure the network setting has been correctly The installation appears to have stopped before completion. Check for an error message underneath the installation window.
“An error occurred while transferring AOSS information.”, “An error occurred in security information.”, or “An error occurred while transferring security key.” appears. There was an information exchange failure between the unit and the wireless router/wireless LAN access point. Wait a while, and then do the AOSS setup again. Place the unit and the wireless router/wireless LAN access point close to each other and do the AOSS setup again. “Another device is connected to the access point.
Starting playback takes more time than usual. The following discs take a longer time to start playback. a disc recorded with a complicated tree structure. a disc recorded in multisession mode. a disc that has not been finalized (a disc to which data can be added). a disc that has many folders. The function automatically changes to the CD function when you insert a disc. This unit will automatically change to the CD function when a disc is inserted.
The remote control does not function. Make sure the iPod is updated with the latest software. If not, update the iPod before using with the unit. The iPod cannot be charged. Make sure the iPod is connected securely. You can use the unit as a battery charger for iPod only when the unit is on. Internet Radio Make sure that the wireless router/wireless LAN access point is turned on. The network settings on the unit may be incorrect.
Make sure that the computer is turned on. Check the following conditions to confirm that the unit and the computer are properly prepared: The server has started. This unit has been registered. You cannot play audio data normally. Shuffle play or shuffle repeat play is selected. Set the play mode to normal (page 35). You cannot play the following tracks: A track that violates playback restrictions. A track with irregular copyright information.
USB An error occurs while using the USB function. If you connect an unsupported USB device, the following problems may occur. For details on the compatible USB devices, refer to the customer support site of Sony Europe, http://www.sony-europe.com/ The USB device is not recognized. File or folder names are not displayed on the unit. Playback is not possible. The sound skips. There is noise. A distorted sound is output. Transferring or recording stops before it is finished.
Tracks or folders on the USB device cannot be erased. Check if the USB device is write-protected. The USB device was disconnected or the power was turned off during erase operation. Delete the partially-erased track. If this does not solve the problem, the USB device may be damaged. Refer to the operating manual of the USB device for how to deal with this problem. If the problem persists, contact your nearest Sony dealer. There is no sound. The USB device is not connected correctly.
If you use partitioned USB device, only MP3, WMA and AAC tracks on the first partition can be played. Playback is possible up to 8 levels. The number of folders on the USB device has exceeded 1,000. The unit does not respond to any operations. The unit does not work correctly. The unit’s internal system may be malfunctioning, or the unit may be suffering from strong electrical noise caused by power supply abnormalities due to being dropped, excessive static electricity, or lightning.
To reset the unit If the unit does not operate properly, you can reset it. 1 2 3 4 Find the symptoms of the issue in the Troubleshooting section, and try corrective actions listed. Disconnect the power cord of the main unit from a wall outlet, wait about 30 seconds, and then connect it again. Place the remote control on the charger. You may be resolve some issues by charging the built-in battery. Press the reset button with a small pin, etc. as shown below.
Precautions/Specifications Precautions On heat buildup Completely disconnect the power cord (mains lead) from the wall socket (mains) if it is not going to be used for an extended period of time. When unplugging the unit, always grip the plug. Never pull the cord itself. Should any solid object or liquid get into the unit, unplug the unit, and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it again. The AC power cord can be changed only by a qualified service facility.
2 Slide and remove the battery compartment lid as shown below. Battery compartment lid 3 Remove the two screws from the metal sheet. The battery is stored under the metal sheet. Metal sheet 4 Remove the metal sheet and the built-in battery. The battery is attached to the metal sheet by adhesive tape. Note Be careful not to hurt yourself when handling the metal sheet. 5 64GB Disconnect the cable that connects the battery to the remote control.
Consideration for others Keep the volume at a moderate level out of consideration of your neighbors, especially at night. Notice for touch panel operations on the remote control The touch panel of the remote control does not work properly when operated with: a gloved finger. two or more fingers. a finger nail. a wet finger. a pen, ballpoint pen, pencil, stylus, etc. touching other objects in addition to a finger.
About CDs The unit CAN play the following discs Audio CDs: MP3 files: CD-Rs and CD-RWs (recorded in a format conforming to the ISO 9660 Level 1 or 2, or Joliet standards). Multisession CDs are supported. Notes When using a multisession disc with an audio CD format, only tracks recorded in the first session can be played. A disc with a mixed CD format is recognized as a CD-DA (audio) disc.

Installing the unit on the wall The unit can be installed on the wall using the Wall-mount bracket SU-WL100 (not supplied). To customers Sufficient expertise is required for installing this product. Be sure to subcontract the installation to Sony dealers or licensed contractors and pay special attention to safety during the installation. Sony is not liable for any damage or injury caused by mishandling or improper installation, or installing any other than the specified product.
1 Adjust the position of the holders of the Base Plate. Remove the screws that secure the left and right holders to the Base Plate and move the holders to the inner position. Firmly secure each holder using the screws removed in the previous procedure . Holder Note When using an electric screwdriver, set the torque setting to approximately 1.5 N.m (15 kgf.cm).

3 Secure the Base Plate to the wall using 4 or more 6 mm diameter or equivalent screws (not supplied). Select 4 screw holes with the mark shown in the diagram below and tighten the screws securely so that they will not become loose. Secure the Base Plate so that it is level. Base Plate WARNING 4 Detach the stand from the unit. Remove the 2 screws that secure the stand from the unit. Push the 2 tabs located on the bottom of the stand, and pull up the stand to detach from the unit.
5 Secure the two Mounting Hook to the rear of the unit. Secure the Mounting Hook to the rear of the unit temporarily, using the 4 screws (+PSW4 × 12) supplied with the Wall-mount bracket SU-WL100. Be sure that screws are tightened securely with equal torque strength to the rear of the unit. Screw (+PSW4 × 12) Mounting Hook Soft cloth CAUTION Be sure not to use any screws other than the ones supplied (+PSW4 × 12) when securing the Mounting Hook.
7 Install the unit onto the Base Plate. Determine the holes of the Base Plate for latching the upper hooks of the Mounting Hook. Hold the unit securely with both hands, and gently align it on the wall.
8 Firmly secure the unit and the Base Plate using the 2 supplied screws (+PSW4 × 12). Secure the screws to the angle mark 0. Screw (+PSW4 × 12) Note When using an electric screwdriver, set to torque setting to approximately 1.5N.m (15 kgf.cm). WARNING Be sure to tighten both left and right securing screws firmly. If you fail to do so, the unit may fall when it is pushed upward and cause injury. 9 Confirm the completion of the installation. Check the following points.
