Single Page Pages are displayed one at a time. When you scroll, the display changes to a previous or succeeding page. Continuous - Facing Two pages are displayed side by side with each pair part of a continuous roll of pages. When you scroll, the previous or next pairs of pages scroll up or down continuously. WM‑PORT jack Use this jack to connect the supplied USB cable, or optional peripheral devices, such as supported accessories for the WM‑PORT.
Strap hole This is used to attach a strap (sold separately). HOLD switch You can protect the player against accidental operation by using the HOLD switch when carrying it. By sliding the HOLD switch in the direction of the arrow, all operation buttons are disabled. If you slide the HOLD switch to the opposite position, the HOLD function is released. *1 There are tactile dots. Use them to help with button operations.
Menu Use the 5-way button and the BACK/HOME button to navigate through screens, play songs, videos, photos, and change the player’s settings. The Home menu appears when you press and hold the BACK/HOME button. The diagram below shows how the screen changes when you press various operation buttons. For example, the player’s screen changes as shown below when you select “Music Library”– “Album” from the Home menu.
The 5-way button performs different functions on the list screens, on the thumbnail screens, and on the “Now Playing” screen. The “Now Playing” screen displays information about the currently playing contents. Now Playing Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu appears. Press the /// button to select (Now Playing), and then press the button to confirm. Detailed information about the currently playing content file appears. Hints You can display the “Now Playing” screen by pressing the OPTION/PWR OFF button to select “Now Playing.
Menu You can change various settings of each function when you press the OPTION/ PWR OFF button. The OPTION/PWR OFF button is useful since you can display the setting screen immediately without selecting setting items from the (Settings) menu of the Home menu. Playing Music Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu Menu When you transfer data to the “MUSIC” folder by dragging and dropping in Windows Explorer, up to the 8th level under the “MUSIC” folder will appear and can be played back. Even if you use another transfer capable software for transferring songs, you can still search for songs by folder. Playing Music You can search for songs by the initial letter of the artist name, album title, or song name. 5-way button Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu appears. Press the /// button to select (Initial Search), and then press the button to confirm. The list of categories you can search by appears. “Artist” searches by the artist name, “Album” searches by the album title, and “Song” searches by the song name.
Playing Music Playlists BACK/HOME button Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu appears. Press the /// button to select (Playlists), and then press the button to confirm. The list of playlists appears. Press the /// button to select a playlist, and then press the button to confirm. The song list appears. Press the /// button to select a song, and then press the button to confirm.
Playing Music Menu You can search for other songs, albums, and artists by the song information of the currently playing song. Press the /// button to select (Now Playing), and then press the button to confirm. The “Now Playing” screen of the currently playing song appears.
Playing Music The player offers 2 different random modes (also known as shuffle play) . 5-way button Menu Intelligent Shuffle Table of Contents Playing Songs in Random Order (Intelligent Shuffle) BACK/HOME button Index Playing songs released in the same year in random order (Time Machine Shuffle) The player randomly selects a release year and plays all transferred songs of that year in random order. Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu appears.
Playing Music Notes Menu Index Continued Table of Contents The controls of the player cannot be operated while a year is being selected. A shuffle play of all songs begins if none of the songs on the player have a release year assigned to them.
Playing Music All the songs stored on the player are played in random order. Playing Music Displaying the Now Playing Screen Each Time the Songs Switch (New Song Pop Up) Table of Contents If you set the screensaver to “Clock” or “Blank” ( page 69) and there is no operation for a while, the screen changes to the clock display or blank screen. However, if you set “New Song Pop Up” to “On,” the screen turns on automatically whenever a song changes to another song. Setting the Music The player offers 3 types of album list format from “Title Only,” “Title & Cover Art,” and “Cover Art Only.” Settings Notes The cover art only appears if the cover art information is included. You can set cover art using the supplied Windows Media Player 11, or another transfer capable software for setting cover art. For details on operation, refer to Help of the software or ask its manufacturer. Some cover art is not displayed, depending on its file format.
Setting the Music Hint Menu You can also select the album display format on the album list screen. Press the OPTION/PWR OFF button on the album list screen, and select “Album Display Format” from the option menu. Table of Contents To return to the previous menu Press the BACK/HOME button.

Setting the Music Settings BACK/HOME button * VPT, which stands for Virtual Phone Technology, is a proprietary sound processing technology developed by Sony. Press and hold the BACK/HOME button until the Home menu appears. Press the /// button to select the button to confirm. (Settings), and then press Press the /// button to select “Music Settings,” and then press the button to confirm. The list of “Music Settings” options appears.
Setting the Music You can also set the “VPT (Surround)” setting from the “Now Playing” screen. Press the OPTION/PWR OFF button, and select “VPT (Surround)” from the option menu. Setting the Music Table of Contents Correcting Sound in the High Range (DSEE (Sound Enhancer)) Menu Activating the “DSEE (Sound Enhance)*” feature, you can hear rich and natural sound almost exactly like the original source. 5-way button BACK/HOME button * DSEE, which stands for Digital Sound Enhancement Engine, is a technology developed by Sony, to enhance the sound quality of compressed audio files by restoring high-range sound removed by the compression process.
Setting the Music Notes Menu The “DSEE (Sound Enhance)” setting is not applied to the sound of the video. The “DSEE (Sound Enhance)” function is not effective for a song with a file format that is not compressed, or song that is of a high bit rate with no treble loss. In the case of a song of very low bit rate, the “DSEE (Sound Enhance)” function will not be effective. Table of Contents To return to the previous menu Press the BACK/HOME button.
Setting the Music Menu You can reduce the volume level between songs. With this setting, when listening to album songs in the shuffle play mode, the volume level between songs is moderated to minimize the difference in their recording levels. Playing Videos You can display or hide the detailed information of a video, such as its title, playback icon, and elapsed playing time, etc., during playback. Playing Videos Menu You can choose options while the player is on hold during the playback of videos, either by playing a video normally or by turning off the screen and listening only to the sound of those videos. Setting this option to “No” saves battery power and battery life will last longer. Playing Photos Up to 1,000 photo folders can be displayed in the photo folder lists, and up to 10,000 photos can be displayed in the photo lists. Settings Menu You can set the screensaver to either a “Clock” or “Blank” for when there is no operation for a while during song playback. You can also select “None” for no screensaver.
