WOOD DUST CAUTION
Sawing, sanding or machining wood products can produce wood dust, which can
cause a flammable or explosive hazard. In addition, wood dust may cause lung,
upper respiratory tract, eye and skin irritation.
Some wood species may cause dermatitis and/or respiratory allergic effects. In
2009, the State of California added wood dust to proposition 65’s list of chemicals
known to cause cancer and required the following warning to be posted:
WARNING: Drilling, sawing, sanding or machining wood products generates wood
dust, a substance known to the State of California to cause cancer. Avoid inhaling
wood dust or use a respirator or other safeguards for personal protection.
