Introduction to this User’s Guide T his User’s Guide introduces you to the PCS Connection Card and Wireless Connection Manager Software through easy-to-follow instructions. We know your time is valuable and that is why we have designed this guide to be used in a building block format or in stand-alone sections. You will get the most out of your card and software if you read each section. However, if you’d like to get right to a specific feature, simply go to that section.

Your PCS Connection Card The PCS Connection Card utilizes CDMA technology enabling real-time wireless access to email, the Internet or your company network. The card runs on most current Windows-compatible laptop or desktop computers, and it provides data transmission of up to 144 kilobytes per second (kbps). The PCS Connection Card also runs on Pocket PC 2000 and Pocket PC 2002. Windows 98 (SR2/SE), 2000, ME or XP, as well as a type II PC card (PCMCIA) slot are also required.
3. 4. Launch the Wireless Connection Manager Software application. If your card has not previously been activated, the Activation Wizard will automatically launch and guide you through the process.
Installing the Wireless Connection Manager Software This section guides you step-by-step through the Wireless Connection Manager Software installation procedure. Once you complete the installation process and activate your PCS Connection Card, you will be able to use your card with your Internet applications. If you require help at any time during the installation process, please contact PCS Customer Service Solutions at 1-888-211-4PCS (4727).
3. Read the information displayed onscreen and click Next to continue. The License Agreement window will appear (see Figure 2). Figure 2: License Agreement window Read the agreement and select I read and agree to the above terms if you are satisfied with the agreement. 5. Click Next to continue. The Start Copying Files window will appear (see Figure 3). 4.
6. If you are satisfied with the installation settings, click Next to continue. A message will appear (see Figure 4) allowing you to specify whether you want an icon for the Wireless Connection Manager placed on your desktop. Figure 4: Desktop Icon message 7. Click Yes to create a desktop icon for the Wireless Connection Manager or No if you would not like a desktop icon. The Installation Complete window will appear (see Figure 5).
8. Click Finish to exit the Installation program. The Install window will appear (see Figure 6). Figure 6: Install window You are required to restart your computer in order to complete the Wireless Connection Manager Software installation procedure. Click OK to reboot your computer. 10. Once your computer has rebooted, insert the PCS Connection Card into your computer’s PC card slot (see “Inserting and Removing Your PCS Connection Card” on page 12 for more information).
Inserting and Removing Your PCS Connection Card Before you insert the PCS Connection Card, you must first install the Wireless Connection Manager Software. Once you have completed the installation procedure, you may insert your card into your computer’s PC card slot. The Sprint label should be facing up, and the 68-pin connector, located at the end of the card, should be inserted directly into the computer’s PC card slot.
Activating Your PCS Connection Card To launch the Wireless Connection Manager, double-click the shortcut icon placed on your desktop, or select StartJProgramsJNovatel WirelessJWireless Connection Manager. If your card was not previously activated, once the Wireless Connection Manager application opens, the Sprint Activation Wizard will automatically launch (if your card has been pre-activated, you will not see the Activation Wizard). The Sprint Welcome window will appear (see Figure 8).
1. Click Next to begin the activation process. The PCS Connection Card Activation window will describe the activation process (see Figure 9). Figure 9: PCS Connection Card Activation (window 2) 2. 䊳 䊳 䊳 䊳 Please telephone PCS Customer Service Solutions to set up your PCS wireless network account. 䊳 If you will be using your PCS Connection Card primarily for business purposes, call 1-877-789-3969. 䊳 If your card is intended primarily for personal use, call 1-888-715-4588.
3. Click Next when you are asked for your card’s Electronic Serial Number (ESN). The third PCS Connection Card Activation window will appear, which displays your card’s ESN in the top field (see Figure 10). Figure 10: PCS Connection Card Activation (window 3) Carefully repeat the Electronic Serial Number to the Service Representative. You will then be given an activation code. 5. Enter the activation code into the bottom field of the PCS Connection Card Activation window. 6. Click Next to continue.
Once you have been given your card’s phone number, enter the number in the top field, as shown in Figure 11. 8. Re-enter the phone number in the bottom field for activation, and click Next to continue. 7. Note: If the phone numbers you entered in the two fields do not match, a warning will appear requesting that you verify that the phone numbers entered are correct. You have now successfully completed the activation process.

Wireless Connection Manager Main Window When you launch the Wireless Connection Manager application, the main window will open (see Figure 13). Figure 13: Wireless Connection Manager main window The main window consists of the following items: Duration This field indicates the length of time connected. Total Bytes Sent This field indicates the amount of data (bytes) the card has sent during the current network session.
Sprint URL Clicking http://www.sprintpcs.com will take you directly to the PCS Web page when connected. PCS Connection Card Status This status indicator, located at the bottom of the main window, displays the card’s network connection status. Mail Icon Clicking this button will open the Web Messaging window, which allows you to view any messages you have received. Lock Icon This button allows you to lock or unlock your card.
Controlling Compression In order to optimize the connection speed and enhance your wireless experience, data has been compressed. You may turn off compression by selecting Compression from the File menu (see Figure 15). Figure 15: Compression Option window When data is being compressed, the compression icon will appear in the main window under Signal Strength (see Figure 16).
Disconnecting From the Network To disconnect from the network, click Disconnect from the main window (see Figure 17). Figure 17: Wireless Connection Manager main window Quitting the Wireless Connection Manager Application To quit the Wireless Connection Manager application, click the located in the top-right corner of the main window or select Exit from the File menu (see Figure 18).
Showing and Hiding the Wireless Connection Manager Keeping the Wireless Connection Manager Window Always Visible To keep the Wireless Connection Manager window on top of all other open windows, select Always on Top from the Window menu (see Figure 19). Figure 19: Always on Top command Once this menu item is selected (indicated by a check mark next to the item), the Wireless Connection Manager window will remain on top of all other windows. Note: Click Always on Top a second time to disable this command.
Hiding the Wireless Connection Manager Task Bar To hide the Wireless Connection Manager task bar when you minimize the screen, select Hide When Minimized from the Window menu (see Figure 20). Figure 20: Hide When Minimized command To re-open the Wireless Connection Manager window, double click the system tray icon , located in the bottom-right corner of your desktop. You may also right-click on the system tray icon and select “Open Wireless Connection Manager.
Total Bytes Fields The Total Bytes fields are displayed in the main window (see Figure 21) and in the General tab of the Detailed Status Report window (see Figure 22). The last date the byte totals were cleared is also displayed in the General tab. (For further information on the Detailed Status Report window, see “Detailed Status Report Window” on page 45.
Clearing the Total Bytes Fields You may clear the Total Bytes fields by using the Clear Bytes command, located under the Tools menu on the main window (see Figure 23). Figure 23: Clear Bytes command The date you last cleared the Total Bytes fields is displayed in the General tab of the Detailed Status Report window (see Figure 22).
Locking and Unlocking Your PCS Connection Card Locking Your PCS Connection Card The Wireless Connection Manager application contains a lock feature, which allows you to temporarily disable your card’s ability to call or connect to the network. Once you unlock your card, you may again access the network. To lock your card: 1. Click the Lock button located in the bottom-right corner of the Wireless Connection Manager main window.
Unlocking Your PCS Connection Card To unlock your card: Click the Lock button , located in the bottom-right corner of the Wireless Connection Manager main window. The Enter Lock Key window will be displayed (see Figure 26). 1. Figure 26: Enter Lock Key window Enter your lock code into the Enter Code text field, and click OK. The default lock code is the last four digits of your card’s phone number. (To change your lock code, see “Changing Your Lock Code” on page 43.
System Tray Icons A system tray icon will appear in the bottom-right corner of your desktop when you launch the Wireless Connection Manager application. The tray icon provides easy access to the Wireless Connection Manager’s main window and the card’s connection status. The following icons indicate the card’s connection status: - The card is currently connected to the network. [flashing] - The card is in the process of connecting to the network. - The card is connected to the network but in a dormant state.
Using the Web Messaging Feature Viewing a Web Message The Message button , located in the bottom-right corner of the main window, will flash if you have received a new text message. To view a text message, click the Message button. The Web Messaging window will open (see Figure 28). Figure 28: Web Messaging window Double-click on the new message to view its contents (unread messages are indicated by bold font).
Sending a Web Message There are three ways to send a Web message: 1. Using your PCS Phone, dial the phone number to which you wish to send a message, and leave a numeric message. 2. Using your Web browser: 䊳 Go to www.messaging.sprintpcs.com. 䊳 Select the Phone tab.
Deleting a Web Message To delete a Web message, open the Web Messaging window by clicking on the Message button . The Web Messaging window will open. Figure 29: Web Messaging window Highlight the message you want to delete, and click the small red (see Figure 29). To delete all the messages in the Web Messaging window, click the large red .
1. A help prompt window will be displayed to indicate that the PCS Software modem has not been installed (see Figure 30). Click on the hyperlink for instructions on installing the PCS Software modem on your computer’s COM port. Figure 30: PCS Software Modem Install Help Note: If installing with Windows 98SE, note the COM port number displayed in bold in the Help window. It will be used in step 4. 2. Within your computer’s Control Panel, select the Phone and Modem Options Utility (see Figure 31).
3. For Windows 2000 and XP, select the Modem tab and click Add (see Figure 32). Proceed to step 6 (page 34). Figure 32: Phone and Modem Options (Windows 2000 & XP) 4. For Windows 98SE, click Add under the General tab (see Figure 33).
5. Select Other for “What type of modem do you want to install?” and click Next (see Figure 34). Figure 34: Install New Modem (Windows 98SE) 6. The Add/Remove Hardware Wizard will launch. Select “Don’t detect my modem; I will select it from a list” and click Next (see Figure 35).
7. Select Sprint from the Manufacturers drop-down list. The PCS Software Modem automatically appears in the Models text window (see Figure 36). Figure 36: Add/Remove Hardward Wizard 8. Highlight the COM port listed on the modem install help window (see Figure 30) and click next (see Figure 37). Figure 37: Add/Remove Hardware Wizard IMPORTANT! The modem must be installed on the port identified by the PCS Software Modem Install Help window.
9. A Digital Signature Not Found window will appear. Click Yes to disregard the notice and continue with the installation (see Figure 38). Figure 38: Digital Signature Not Found 10. Click Finish to complete the installation (see Figure 39). The PCS Software Modem now appears as a Phone and Modem option on your computer.
Adding a New Dial-up Connection Adding a new dial-up connection in the PCS Wireless Connection Manager is very similar to adding a dial-up connection on your computer. A New Connection Wizard will guide you through the process. To configure your RAS (dial-up) connection: 1. Select FileJNew Connection. 2. Choose Dial-Up Networking Connection and click Next. The New Conection Wizard will appear (see Figure 40). Figure 40: New Connection Wizard 1 3.
4. Enter the name you would like to assign to the new dial-up connection and click Next to continue (see Figure 41). Figure 41: New Connection Wizard 2 5. Click Finish to store the new dial-up connection (see Figure 42).
Editing a Dial-up Connection Once you have configured new connections to your dial-up networks, you can edit the connection properties as necessary. To edit a dial-up connection: 1. Select FileJEdit Connection. 2. The Edit Connection window will appear (see Figure 43). Choose the connection you wish to edit from the Select connection list. Figure 43: Edit Connection 3. Edit the entries in the Phone Number, Login, Password and/or Domain fields and click OK to save the changes (or Cancel to discard).
PCS Connection Card Configuration Window To access the PCS Connection Card Configuration window (see Figure 45), select Configuration from the File drop-down menu. Figure 45: PCS Connection Card Configuration window The configuration window contains the following items: Network Service List The values contained in this drop-down list box include: Automatic - If this value is selected, the card will automatically search for any available network service (based on roaming agreements).
Current CDMA Time This field displays the time as indicated by the CDMA base station. If you have changed location, the time displayed in this field may be different from the time displayed in the Current System Time field. Show Connection Properties If you have previously disabled the Connection Properties window, selecting this check box will activate the window so it is visible when you attempt to connect to the network.
The PCS Connection Card Configuration window will open (see Figure 47). Select the desired value from the Network Service dropdown list box, and click OK to save the new roaming settings. Figure 47: PCS Connection Card Configuration window 䊳 䊳 The Automatic option directs the card to automatically search for any accessible network if you travel outside the PCS Service Area.
Changing Your Lock Code To change your current lock code: 1. Select Configuration from the File menu. 2. From the PCS Connection Card Configuration window, click Set Lock Code. The Change Lock Code window will appear (see Figure 48). Figure 48: Change Lock Code window Enter the current lock code into the Old Code text field. Enter the new lock code into the New Code text field. Enter the new lock code in the Re-Enter Code text field. Click OK to accept the new lock code.
PCS Connection Card Properties Window To access the PCS Connection Card Properties window (see Figure 49), select Properties from the File menu. Figure 49: PCS Connection Card Properties window The information contained in this window can be helpful for PCS Customer Service Solutions in diagnosing any problems you may have with your card. The following fields are displayed in the PCS Connection Card Properties window: User Name This field displays your PCS User name.
Modem Type This field displays your PCS Connection Card model. Manufacturer This field displays the name of the manufacturing company of the card. Detailed Status Report Window To access the Detailed Status Report window, select Detailed Status Report from the Tools menu. The Detailed Status Report window contains two tabs: General and History.
The History tab (see Figure 51) displays the date, time, and current card and network session activities. This tab is useful when attempting to diagnose problems with either your card or your network connection. Figure 51: Detailed Status Report window (History) About Wireless Connection Manager Window To access the About Wireless Connection Manager window (see Figure 52), select About Wireless Connection Manager from the Help menu.
Updating the Wireless Connection Manager Software The Wireless Connection Manager will automatically check periodically for available updates to its software version. To manually check for software updates, select StartJWireless Connection Manager Update (see Figure 53). Accessing the Web With Your PCS Connection Card Launching the Web To launch the Web: 䊳 From the card’s main menu, highlight Web and select Launch. Your User Name When you buy a PCS Connection Card and sign up for service, you're automatically assigned a User name. Then, when you use PCS Vision, your User name is submitted to identify you to the Sprint Nationwide PCS Network.
Messaging Now you can send and receive email and instant messages on select PCS Connection Cards. These appear on your screen as Page/Text and include numeric messages as well as text PCS Messages. Signing Up for Web Updates With Web Updates, you can have news and information sent directly to your PCS Connection Card at the times you choose. To select the information you want sent to your card: 1. From your computer, log on to the Internet. 2. Go to the site from which you want to receive information.
Email Using Email With Email, you can set up an account at no additional charge and perform many of the typical email functions from your PCS Phone that you can from your personal computer. You can manage your Email Account from your PCS Phone or personal computer at www.sprintpcs.com. You can also access other select email providers from the Web. Accessing Email Messages To access Email Messages: 1. From the Web home page, select the Messaging folder. 2. From the Messaging folder, select Email.
PCS Business ConnectionSM Personal Edition PCS Business ConnectionSM Personal Edition is designed to offer secure wireless access to both Microsoft® Outlook® and Lotus Notes®. PCS Business Connection Personal Edition delivers the following features: 䊳 Business email access: Read, reply to, forward, delete and compose your company email. 䊳 Company directory and contacts: Search, view, call, and email contacts from your company's directory. Do all this and add/edit your personal contacts.
PCS Vision FAQs How will I know when my card is ready for PCS Vision Service? Your User name (for example, bsmith001@sprintpcs.com) will appear on the display screen. How do I sign-in for the first time? You are automatically signed in to PCS Vision Services when you turn on your phone. How do I know when my card is connected to PCS Vision Services? Your card automatically connects when PCS Vision Service is used or an incoming message arrives. Your screen will also display the icon.

A list of frequently asked questions, as well as a detailed report of the various error messages, have been provided to assist you with determining the possible cause of the problem or error, and finding a viable solution.
PCS Connection Card FAQs How can I check the quality of my connection? The signal strength status bar, located on the Wireless Connection Manager main window, indicates the quality of the card’s signal. If two or more bars are shaded green, the card’s signal strength is adequate. If less than two bars are shaded green, the signal strength is poor, and it will be difficult to establish and maintain a network connection.
Troubleshooting Error Messages One of the following error messages may be displayed if your card is unable to connect to the network. The card is not responding properly. You are directed to wait between 15-30 seconds and to then re-launch the Wireless Connection Manager Software. If the same message appears, you may have not inserted the card or installed the card drivers properly. Remove and reinsert the card into the PC card slot. Your computer should “beep” when it has detected the card.
Access denied because User name and/or password is invalid on the domain. Contact PCS Customer Service Solutions at 1-888-211-4PCS (4727). The card has been removed. This message indicates the card was removed while the Wireless Connection Manager was running.

Services may not be available or may operate differently in certain affiliate markets or other areas. Credit Verification. You must have and maintain satisfactory credit to receive and continue to receive Services. We will verify your credit before agreeing to provide Services to you and we may verify your credit at any time while we provide Services to you. Credit verification may include a review of credit reports that we receive from credit bureaus.

Calls to 911 or similar emergency numbers cannot be placed through the Voice Command feature.
Late Payment Charges. Payment is past due if we do not receive it by the due date shown on your invoice. Any payment for Services and equipment not made when due accrues late charges until paid at the rate of 5% per month or at the highest rate allowed by law. Acceptance of late or partial payments (even if marked "paid in full") does not waive our right to collect all amounts that you owe us. If your Service has been suspended due to non-payment, you may be charged a reactivation fee. Disputed Charges.
Deposits. If we require a deposit for you to establish or keep Services, we will hold the deposit as partial guarantee of payment for Services. We may change the deposit amount at any time to reflect revised estimated monthly charges based upon your usage. A deposit may not be used to pay any invoice (unless it is used to pay a final invoice) or delay payment. The deposit amount, the length of time we hold the deposit and changes to the deposit amount are determined based on your credit and payment history.
Taxes and Surcharges. We invoice you for taxes, fees and other charges levied by or remitted directly to federal, state or local authorities, or foreign government on Services including, without limitation, sales, gross receipts, use, and excise taxes. If you claim any tax exemption, you must provide us with a valid tax-exempt document. Any tax exemption applies only from the date we receive a valid taxexempt document.
Messages. You will incur airtime usage charges when accessing your voicemail from your PCS Phone. You may also incur charges in accessing text messages from your PCS Phone. You may access your voicemail without incurring airtime usage charges by checking your voicemail from a wireline phone. We may impose limits on the number of voicemail or text message that can be retained through your PCS account.
e) traffic or other accidents, or any health-related claims allegedly arising from the use of Services, phones, equipment or accessories used in connection with the Services; f) the use of Wireless Web Services and PCS Vision applications and services, including the accuracy or reliability of any information obtained from the Internet using Wireless Web Services or from Voice Portal Services, PCS Vision wireless services or Internet services, content or applications not supported by Sprint PCS; g) any late
MANDATORY ARBITRATION OF DISPUTES. ANY CLAIM, CONTROVERSY OR DISPUTE OF ANY KIND BETWEEN THE CUSTOMER AND THE COMPANY AND/OR ANY OF ITS EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, AFFILIATES OR OTHER REPRESENTATIVES, WHETHER SOUNDING IN CONTRACT, STATUTE, OR TORT, INCLUDING FRAUD, MISREPRESENTATION, FRAUDULENT INDUCEMENT, OR ANY OTHER LEGAL OR EQUITABLE THEORY AND REGARDLESS OF THE DATE OF ACCRUAL OF SUCH CLAIM, CONTROVERSY OR DISPUTE SHALL BE RESOLVED BY FINAL AND BINDING ARBITRATION AS PRESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION.
Choice of Law; Jurisdiction. This Agreement is governed by and must be construed under federal law and the laws of the State of Kansas, without regard to choice of law principles. General. If either of us does not enforce any right or remedy available under this Agreement, that failure is not a waiver of the right or remedy for any other breach or failure by the other party. Our waiver of any requirement in any one instance is not a general waiver of that requirement and does not amend this Agreement.
Manufacturer’s Warranty Novatel Wireless, Inc. (“Vendor”) offers the original end user purchaser of the enclosed wireless personal computer modem card (the “Product”) from Vendor or an authorized supplier, a personal, non-transferable, limited warranty that during the Warranty Period the Product will be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use. The “Warranty Period” shall be a period that expires one year from the original purchase date of the Product.
of installation, removal or reinstallation of the Product; (i) signal reception problems (unless caused by a defect in material or workmanship; (j) Products on which the original identification marks, warranty stickers or serial numbers have been removed, altered or rendered illegible; or (k) Products designated by Vendor as beta site test samples, experimental, developmental, reproduction, sample, incomplete or out of specification Products.
