This Get Started guide is designed to help you set up and use your new KYOCERA Hydro EDGE. It’s divided into four sections to help you find the information you need quickly and easily. Get Ready − page 1 − Find out what you need to do before you use your phone the first time, including inserting a battery and activating Sprint service on your phone. Android™ Basics − page 3 − Learn some basics about how to move around on your phone, use the Home screen, and enter text.

Get Your Phone Ready Install the Battery 1. Slide the battery cover lock to the unlocked position. 2. Insert your thumbnail or fingernail into the slot and lift the battery cover gently. 3. Insert the battery, contacts end first, and gently press the battery into place. 4. Replace the battery cover, making sure all the tabs are secure and there are no gaps around the cover. 5. Slide the battery cover lock to the locked position. 2.
Activate Your Phone If you purchased your phone at a Sprint Store, it is probably activated and ready to use. If you received your phone in the mail, and it is a new Sprint account or a new phone number, your phone is designed to activate automatically when you first turn it on. You will see a Hands Free Activation screen, which may be followed by a PRL Update screen and a Firmware Update screen. Follow the onscreen instructions to continue.
Move Around Your Phone’s Menus and Screens Using Gestures Your phone’s touchscreen lets you control everything through various types of touches, or gestures. Touch: When you want to press onscreen buttons, select items such as application and settings icons, or type, simply touch the screen with your finger. A light touch works best. Touch and hold: To open the available options for an item, simply touch and hold the item.
Your Home Screen Home Screen Notifications Panel ►►Touch When you see a notification icon on the left side of the status bar, drag the status bar down to display the Notifications panel. Touch a notification to open the related application, such as messaging, call list, or event. to display your Home screen.
Your Home Screen Your phone’s Home screen extends horizontally to six additional screens. This gives you room to customize your phone and put the things you need front and center, just a swipe away. from • To display the Home screen, touch any screen. • To view extended screens, flick the screen left or right. There are three additional screens on each side of the Home screen. Add Items to Your Screens 1. Touch on the screen you wish to change. 2.
Keys Function Keys Open Applications Just below the touchscreen, you’ll find a row of three buttons that let you perform specific functions. • If an application is on one of your screens, just touch it to open it. • If an application is not available from your Home screen, touch (if you’re not already on the Home screen), touch to display the applications list, and then touch the application from the alphabetical list. You may have to scroll to the side to find the application you’re looking for.
Typing Your phone lets you choose between two onscreen keyboards: Android and Swype. Language and Keyboard Settings You can change your text entry options through the Language & input settings menu. These may include selecting touchscreen keyboard options (Android keyboard or Swype), word prediction, user dictionary, and locale (language and region). ►►Touch > > System settings > Language & input and then touch an option. • To change the language for your keyboard, touch Language.
Typing: Swype Keyboard Swype Keyboard Swype™ lets you enter a word with one continuous motion. To enter a word, just drag your finger over the letters. • To enter the small number or symbol at the top of a key, touch and hold the key. • To enter several symbols, touch . • To enter apostrophes in common words (like “I’ll”), drag through the apostrophe key. • To correct a word, touch anywhere in the word. Swype shows a small menu of other word options.
Use Your Phone: Voicemail Set Up Your Voicemail Retrieve Your Voicemail All unanswered calls are automatically transferred to your voicemail, even if your phone is in use or turned off. You should set up your voicemail and personal greeting as soon as your phone is activated: ►►Touch 1. Touch > Phone to display the phone dialpad, and then touch and hold . 2. When your voicemail answers, touch Sprint strongly recommends setting a voicemail password.
Phone Calls Make a Phone Call 1. Touch dialpad. > Phone to display the phone 2. Touch the digits of the number you want to call to delete one or on the dialpad. Touch more digits. 3. Touch to place the call. Respond to an Incoming Call • On the incoming call screen, flick the Answer icon . • Flick the Ignore icon to send the call to your voicemail inbox. • Flick the Ignore & Text icon to ignore the call and send a message to the caller.
Contacts Your phone’s Contacts application lets you access and manage contacts from a variety of sources, including Gmail, Exchange, Facebook, Twitter, contacts synced from your computer, and old-fashioned contacts entered by hand. View Contacts Group Tab Indicator Indicates which tab is displayed. Search ICE 1. Touch > > People. 2. Scroll through the list to view your contacts. Use Your Phone Personal Favorite Add Contact visit sprint.
Contacts Add a New Contact 1. Touch > > People > Edit Contacts . 2. Add as much or as little information as you want. • To add information in a field, touch the field to display the touchscreen keyboard. • To assign a number or address type (such as HOME, MOBILE, WORK, etc.), touch the label next to the number or address field. • To assign a picture, touch the icon next to the name, select a location, and touch a picture. You can also take a new picture. 3. Touch DONE when you’re finished.
Messaging 1. Touch > > Messaging > . 2. Enter a phone number or email address in the “To” field. 3. Touch the “Type message” field and type your message. • To insert pictures or other files, touch 4. Touch a message to open and read it.
Email Setup You can link multiple email accounts to your KYOCERA Hydro EDGE, including Exchange server accounts. You can set up email accounts through the setup application or directly through the settings menu or email application. Set Up a Gmail™ Account You likely signed into your Gmail account when you first turned your phone on. If not, you can add it or another account at any time. 1. Touch > Add account. > System settings > 2. Touch Google. 3.
Email Setup 1. Touch > > Email . 2. Follow the instructions to sign in to your email account. • If you’re adding an account from a common email provider, such as Windows Live Hotmail or Yahoo Mail, enter your email address and password and touch Next. Your email should be set up automatically. • If you’re adding an account from a less common provider, or if you have additional settings to configure, enter your email address and password and touch Manual setup.
Using Email Access Email Messages Send an Email Message 1. Touch 1. Touch > > Email or Gmail. • If necessary, touch the email account you want to use. 2. From the inbox, touch the message you want to view. > > Email or Gmail. • If necessary, touch the email account you want to use. 2. On the email account inbox touch . 3. Enter an email address or contact name. 4. Enter a subject and a message.
Wi-Fi Connect to a Wi-Fi Network When you’re in range of an available Wi-Fi network, you can use your phone’s Wi-Fi feature to access the Internet and other data services. 1. Touch > > System settings. Use Your Phone 2. Touch the Wi-Fi ON/OFF icon to turn Wi-Fi on. 3. Touch Wi-Fi to display a list of available networks. 4. Touch a Wi-Fi network to connect. If necessary, enter the security key and touch Connect.
Web Find sports scores, news, and weather. Shop online. Tabbed browsing lets you browse the Web just the way you want to. Go Online ►►Touch > > Browser. • To go to a specific website, touch the address bar and enter the Web address. • To access and manage bookmarks, touch > Bookmarks in the browser options menu or next to the address bar and then . 18 Touch to open a menu where you can share a page, access your bookmarks, refresh a page, and more.
Google Play™ Store App Google Play™ is the place to go to find new Android apps, books, movies, and music for your phone. 1. Touch > > Play Store. 2. The first time you visit the Google Play Store app, touch Accept to accept the Terms of Service. 3. To find what you want quickly: • Browse through featured apps and games. Scroll through the options or browse by categories within Apps, Games, Music, Books, Magazines, or Movies & TV. • Search for an app or game.
Camera & Camcorder Take a Picture Camera & Camcorder Settings 1. Press and hold the camera button on the right side of the phone. • From the camera or camcorder screen, touch to open the capture settings menu. These settings include Camera light, Size, Picture mode, and more. 2. Frame your subject in the screen. 3. Touch and release or press the camera button to take the picture. View Pictures and Videos Record a Video 1. Touch 1.
Camera & Camcorder Share Pictures and Videos by Email, Gmail, or Messaging 1. Touch > > Gallery. 2. Touch an album to display the thumbnails. 3. Touch and hold a thumbnail and then touch . Use Your Phone – or – Touch the thumbnail to open it and then touch . 4. Choose Bluetooth, Picasa, Messaging, Google+, YouTube, Email, or Gmail as a share method. 5. Bluetooth Pair and Connect With a Bluetooth Device Share Contacts, Files, or Pictures Using Bluetooth 1. Touch > Bluetooth. 1. Open the application containing the file you want to share. (For example, touch > > Gallery.) ® > System settings > • If Bluetooth is not turned on, touch the Bluetooth ON/OFF icon to ON. 2. Select an available device and follow the prompts to pair the devices. You may be required to enter a passcode (often 0000) to complete pairing. 3.
Your KYOCERA Hydro EDGE provides easy access to a variety of Google services including Gmail™, Google Talk™, Google Maps™, Google Navigation, and YouTube™. • Gmail – The Google mail service. Your Gmail account lets you access many Google-related services as well as the Google Play Store. (See “Set Up a Gmail™ Account” on page 14.) • Google Talk – Google’s instant messaging service. Touch > >Talk to begin using the service. (If you’re signed in to Gmail, you are already signed in to Google Talk.
Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot allows you to turn your KYOCERA Hydro EDGE into a Wi-FI hotspot. Set Up and Activate Your Mobile Hotspot Note: Risks can be associated with connecting to the public Internet. It is recommended that you use a password or other possible steps to protect against unauthorized access. 1. Touch > > Settings > More… > Tethering & portable hotspot and touch the check box next to Portable Wi-Fi hotspot to turn on this feature. 2.
Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot Connect a Device to the Mobile Hotspot visit sprint.com/readynow for more information to get your phone up and running Use Your Phone 1. Enable Wi-Fi on your device (for example, a laptop computer). 2. Select the Network SSID for your mobile hotspot and enter the password if prompted. 3. When “Connected” appears on your device, launch your Web browser to confirm you have an Internet connection.
GPS Navigation. Get turn-by-turn directions to a known address, and find nearby restaurants, stores, and other points of interest. Google Maps™ ►►Touch > > Maps. Open Your Music Player Getting Music ►►Touch Before you can listen to your music, you need to load songs into your phone’s microSD card. Here’s one way to do it: 1. Use the supplied USB cable to connect your phone to an available USB port on your computer. > > Play Music. The Music library screen appears. • Music is stored in categories PLAYLISTS, RECENT, ARTISTS, ALBUMS, SONGS and GENRES. Touch a category, and then touch the song or playlist you want to play. Touch to randomly play all songs.
Sprint Applications Access additional exclusive Sprint features right from your phone. Download Sprint Applications 1. Touch > > Sprint Zone. 2. From the Sprint Zone Web page, scroll up or down and touch an item to check your account, read the latest news about your phone, load an application, and more. Sprint TV & Movies Note: The Sprint TV & Movies application does not come preinstalled on your phone. You will need to download it from the Sprint Zone as described above.
Sprint ID 1. Touch > Sprint ID. 2. From the Choose your ID screen, touch an ID pack to apply it, or touch Get New ID Packs to search for new ID packs. 3. Once it has been downloaded, drag the Notifications bar down and touch OK. Note: The Sprint ID pack is installed on your phone by default if you accept when you first turn your phone on. The instructions above are to switch to a different ID pack.
Battery-Saving Tips Manage Your Phone’s Wireless Functions Manage the Display Brightness and Screen Timeout Disable the portable Wi-Fi hotspot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS functions of the phone when you’re not using them. ►►Touch ►►Touch > > System settings and disable any of these functions that are not in use under WIRELESS & NETWORKS or Location access. — or — ►►Add a Power Control widget to your Home screen.
