HOW TO CHOOSE THE rIGHT SAW Choosing a saw is all about selecting the right size and type of saw teeth for a particular job. Tooth size is measured in the number of complete teeth to the inch (tpi). Larger and fewer teeth give a faster cut, whereas a greater number of smaller teeth provide a finer finish.

TIPS AND TECHNIQUES TIP 1 Clamp the workpiece securely in an engineer’s vice. TIP 2 Take time to set the blade tension correctly, too soft and the blade may snag and break. TIP 3 Ensure that the flow of water or gas in pipes has been safely turned off. TIP 8 When cutting thick rod or bar stock mark the cutting line all the way around. Make your first cut to the depth of the blade on the upper surface. Rotate the steel towards you and again cut to the depth of the blade. Continue until the cut is completed.
TIPS AND TECHNIQUES To produce good results you will need to practise your sawing technique. For best results always use a sharp saw and take your time; racing usually ends in the saw veering off course. STEP 1 For a tear free cut use a knife to mark the line all round the wood rather than a pencil. STEP 2 Always cut on the waste side of the line; if you are a little unsure leave a little additional waste that you can plane off afterwards if necessary.
