Portrait—printingonpaperacrossitsnarmwerdimension,suchasaletter
on paperthat is 8.5 in. wide and 11in. high;portraitpicturesare
usuallytallerthanthey are wide.
Proportionaltype— a typefacein whichsomeletterstakeup moreroom
onapnntedlinethanothers,suchasWtakingmomspacethanl. The
spacingofthelettersisalsointendedtoenhancetheestheticquality
of theprintedpage.
RAM— RandomAccessMemory,or memorythat can be used to store
informationtemporarily,such as text or printingconfigurations.
RAM-storedinformationis erasedwhenthepoweris turnedoff.
ROM — ReadOnlyMemory,or memoryin which informationcan be
storedpermanently,whetherthepoweris on or off.
RS-232—awiringconfigurationforsendingandreceivingserialtransmis-
sions, includingdataand acknowledgmentsbetweensendingand
receivingequipment(“handshaking”).
Serial— acommunicationsinterfacethatsendsor nxeives 1 bit of infor-

Strokeweight—theintensityofaprintedcharacter,suchaslight,medium,
or bold.Normalprintingis mediumweight.
SymbolSet— theenthe listof ASCIIletters,numbers,andsymbolsused
with a particularlanguage,suchas Englishor Spanish.
VMI(VerticalMotionIndex)— referstolinespacing,thesmallestincre-
mentthatcanbemadeintheverticalory axis.
