Initial Operation
3.1 FRONT PANEL
The front panel of Star LS-5 Series is a combination
interactive message center. The panel consists of:
. a 2-line, 32 character LCD display screen
. 5 LED lights
● 8 momentary contact buttons

The momentary contact buttons permit you to perfrom various printer
functions. In turn, the printer uses the display screen and the light indicators
to convey information to you.
The screen display is the primary way the printer communicates with the
operator. Itinforms the operator about the machine’s overall state including:
theprinter’s status,alarm conditionsthatrequire some action by theoperator,
“soft”errors, and messages when selectingcurrent, initialanddefaultprinter
parameters. The LEDs provide an “at a glance” summary of the printer’s
status.

The printer operates in two main modes when the printer is off-line:
. Normal Mode — performs the function labeled above the button.
. Program Mode — press the
(-M) button to enter menu selections.
The meaning and use of the panel buttonsdepends on the mode in which the
printer is operating.
