English Guide to Using this Manual Pictograms The meanings of the pictograms attached to the machine are explained in this manual. Depending on the model concerned, the following pictograms may be attached to your machine. Fuel tank; fuel mixture of gasoline and engine oil Operate manual fuel pump Engineering improvements STIHL's philosophy is to continually improve all of its products. For this reason we may modify the design, engineering and appearance of our products periodically.
English The use of noise emitting power tools may be restricted to certain times by national or local regulations. Do not operate your power tool if any of its components are damaged. Do not use a pressure washer to clean your power tool. The solid jet of water may damage parts of the power tool. Accessories and Spare Parts Only use parts and accessories that are explicitly approved for this power tool by STIHL or are technically identical.
English Fueling Before Starting Gasoline is an extremely flammable fuel. Keep clear of naked flames. Do not spill any fuel – do not smoke. Check that your power tool is properly assembled and in good condition – refer to appropriate chapters in the instruction manual. – Always shut off the engine before refueling. Do not fuel a hot engine – fuel may spill and cause a fire. Always remove the power tool from your back and put it on the ground before refueling.
English To reduce the risk of damage to property, also maintain this distance from other objects (vehicles, windows). Do not direct the air blast towards bystanders or animals since the air flow can blow small objects at great speed. When blow-sweeping (in open ground and gardens), watch out for small animals to avoid harming them. Never leave a running machine unattended. Take special care in slippery conditions – damp, snow, ice, on slopes and uneven ground.
English Working Technique Vibrations To minimize blowing time, use a rake and broom to loosen dirt particles before you start blowing. Prolonged use of the power tool may result in vibration-induced circulation problems in the hands (whitefinger disease). Recommended working technique to minimize air pollution: – – – If necessary, dampen the surface to be cleaned in order to avoid creating too much dust.
English Shut off the engine before rectifying problems. Assembling the Unit A screwdriver is included in the accessory bag provided. 0000-GXX-2037-A0 Vibration behavior is influenced by the condition of the AV elements – check the AV elements at regular intervals. Fitting the Pleated Hose on the Elbow N Tighten down the screw (arrow). 2 N Open the hose clamp (1) and fit it on the pleated hose (2). N Engage the tab in the recess.
English Adjusting the Throttle Cable It may be necessary to correct the adjustment of the throttle cable after assembling the machine or after a prolonged period of operation. 6 Pull the ends of the clamp on the control handle (6) apart and push it over stub of pleated hose (2). N Attach throttle cable to retainer on the hose clamp (1). Adjust the throttle cable only when the unit is completely and properly assembled.
English Fuel Your engine requires a mixture of gasoline and engine oil. WARNING For health reasons, avoid direct skin contact with gasoline and avoid inhaling gasoline vapor. STIHL MotoMix STIHL recommends the use of STIHL MotoMix. This ready-to-use fuel mix contains no benzol or lead, has a high octane rating and ensures that you always use the right mix ratio. STIHL MotoMix uses STIHL HP Ultra two-stroke engine oil for an extra long engine life. MotoMix is not available in all markets.
English Filling up with fuel Fueling Information Before You Start Take care not to spill fuel while fueling and do not overfill the tank. STIHL recommends you use the STIHL filler nozzle (special accessory). NOTICE With the engine stopped and before starting, check the air intakes between the backplate and powerhead for blockages and clean if necessary. Closing screw-type tank cap Preparations Before fueling, clean the filler cap and the area around it to ensure that no dirt falls into the tank.
English Fixed throttle Cold engine (cold start) Starting / Stopping the Engine 1 The throttle trigger (2) can be locked in any position by operating the setting lever (1). N Observe safety precautions. 9928BA007 AM 2 0009BA010 KN Starting the Engine NOTICE Start your unit on a clean, dust-free surface only to ensure that no dust is sucked in. N Turn the choke knob to g. Warm engine (warm start) To disengage the lock: 9928BA008 AM Return the setting lever (1) to the run position F.
English Starting Other hints on starting As soon as the engine runs If the engine stops while the choke knob in on g or during acceleration Move the choke knob to < and continue cranking until the engine runs. 0009BA016 KN N If the engine does not start N N N Pull the starter grip slowly with your right hand until you feel it engage and then give it a brisk strong pull. Do not pull out the starter rope to full length – it might otherwise break. N Do not let the starter grip snap back.
English Operating Instructions 0009BA018 KN During Operation N Move the setting lever in the direction of † – the engine stops – the setting lever springs back to the on position. Cleaning the Air Filter If there is a noticeable loss of engine power After a long period of full throttle operation, allow the engine to run for a short while at idle speed so that engine heat can be dissipated by the flow of cooling air.
English Install the filter element. N Fit the filter in the filter housing and push the retainer into position. N Refit the filter cover and turn the filter cover lock to the horizontal position Adjusting the Carburetor Catalytic Converter Power tools with a catalytic converter (depending on model) must be run on a 50 : 1 mixture of unleaded gasoline and STIHL two-stroke engine oil or equivalent two-stroke engine oil – see chapter on "Fuel".
English Checking the Spark Plug N If the engine is down on power, difficult to start or runs poorly at idle speed, first check the spark plug. N Fit a new spark plug after about 100 operating hours – or sooner if the electrodes are badly eroded. Install only suppressed spark plugs of the type approved by STIHL – see "Specifications". Removing the Spark Plug 1 Unscrew the spark plug. Installing the spark plug N A N Clean dirty spark plug.
English Engine Running Behavior Storing the Machine If engine running behavior is unsatisfactory even though the air filter is clean and the carburetor is properly adjusted, the cause may be the muffler. For periods of 3 months or longer N Drain and clean the fuel tank in a well ventilated area. Have the muffler checked for contamination (carbonization) by your servicing dealer. N Dispose of fuel properly in accordance with local environmental requirements.
