Engineering improvements STIHL's philosophy is to continually improve all of its products.
English parts and accessories in order to avoid the risk of accidents and damage to the machine. – Never expose the control unit to microwaves or high pressures. – Fluid may leak from the battery if it is not used properly – avoid contact with the skin! If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek medical help. Leaking battery fluid can cause skin irritation and chemical burns. STIHL recommends the use of original STIHL replacement parts.
English – Always connect the unit to a properly installed wall outlet. – Make sure the insulation of the connecting cord and plug is in good condition. – – – Check the 12V/24V charging cable for damage at regular intervals. If damage is found, immediately disconnect the power supply adapter from the vehicle socket to avoid the risk of electrocution. – Never use damaged cords and plugs or connecting cords that do not comply with regulations.
English Wear heavy-duty gloves. STIHL offers a comprehensive range of personal protective clothing and equipment. Transporting the Power Tool Fueling Gasoline is an extremely flammable fuel. Keep clear of naked flames. Do not spill any fuel – do not smoke. Always shut off the engine before refueling. Do not fuel a hot engine – fuel may spill and cause a fire. 271BA001 KN Open the fuel cap carefully to allow any pressure build-up in the tank to release slowly and avoid fuel spillage.
English – Never attempt to modify the controls or the safety devices in any way. – Keep the handles dry and clean – free from oil and dirt – for safe control of the power tool. – Adjust straps and loop handle to suit your height and reach – see chapter on "Fitting the Backpack". To reduce the risk of personal injury, do not operate your power tool if it is damaged or not properly assembled.
English Be particularly alert and cautious when wearing hearing protection because your ability to hear warnings (shouts, alarms, etc.) is restricted. To reduce the risk of accidents, take a break in good time to avoid tiredness or exhaustion. Work calmly and carefully – in daylight conditions and only when visibility is good. Stay alert so as not to endanger others. Your power tool produces toxic exhaust fumes as soon as the engine is running.
English Do not continue using or attempt to repair damaged or cracked cutting attachments by welding, straightening or modifying the shape (out of balance). Metal cutting attachments rotate at very high speed. The forces that occur act on the machine, the attachment and the material being cut. This may cause parts of the cutting blade to come off and hit the operator or bystanders at high speed and result in serious or fatal injuries. Sharpen metal cutting attachments regularly as specified.
English Only use high-quality replacement parts in order to avoid the risk of accidents and damage to the machine. If you have any questions in this respect, consult a servicing dealer. STIHL recommends the use of original STIHL replacement parts. They are specifically designed to match your model and meet your performance requirements. To reduce the risk of injury, always shut off the enginebefore carrying out any maintenance or repairs or cleaning the machine.
English Resharpen the grass cutting blade according to instructions when it has dulled noticeably. 002BA177 KN 002BA135 KN Brush Knife If one of the wear limit marks on the PolyCut mowing head is worn through (arrow): Do not continue using the mowing head. Install a new one. There is otherwise a risk of injury from thrown parts of the head. The risk of kickout is greatest when the black area of the rotating cutting attachment comes into contact with a solid object.
English – Avoid contact with stones, rocks, pieces of metal and other solid foreign objects. – Never cut wood or shrubs with a stem diameter of more than 2 cm. – Inspect the brush knife at regular short intervals for signs of damage. Do not continue working with a damaged brush knife. – Resharpen the brush knife regularly (when it has dulled noticeably) and have it balanced if necessary (STIHL recommends a STIHL servicing dealer).

English Charge the battery – Before using your new power tool for the first time. – After an out-of-service period of more than 3 months – if necessary. – If you use your power tool repeatedly for short periods only with frequent engine starts – if necessary. Charging the Battery A factory-new battery is not fully charged. It must be fully charged before you use the power tool for the first time. N Move the slide control to STOP-0 (h).

N Disconnect the barrel connector from the power tool's charge socket.

N Push the end of the flexible shaft (1) into the sleeve (2) until it engages – turn the shaft back and forth at the same time. N Remove the protective cap from the other end of the shaft. N Push the flexible shaft into the powerhead coupling (3) until it engages – turn the shaft back and forth at the same time.

N Fit the clamp (6). N Line up the holes. N Fit the washers (7) on the screws (8), and insert the screws in the holes. N Screw the square nuts (1) onto the screws (8) as far as stop. N Go to "Securing the Loop Handle".
English Adjusting the Throttle Cable Mounting the Deflector 1 A properly adjusted throttle cable is the precondition for correct operation in the full throttle, starting throttle and idle positions. 2 N 271BA068 KN Adjust the throttle cable only after the unit is fully assembled – the control handle must be in the normal operating position.
English Fitting the skirt and blade screwdriver are either supplied with the machine or available as special accessories. Mounting the Cutting Attachment Preparations N Insert the stop pin (2) or screwdriver in the hole (3) in the gearhead as far as stop – apply slight pressure. N Rotate the nut or cutting attachment on the shaft (1) until the stop pin slips into position and blocks the shaft.
English N Take the thrust washer (3) off the shaft (4). Do not remove the thrust plate (5). N Go to "Mounting the Mowing Head" or "Mounting the Metal Cutting Attachment". N Take the parts off the shaft – do not remove the thrust plate (7). If the mounting nut turns too freely, fit a new one. Fuel Your engine requires a mixture of gasoline and engine oil. For health reasons, avoid direct skin contact with gasoline and avoid inhaling gasoline vapor. STIHL MotoMix Engine Oil Use only quality two-stroke engine oil.
English N Use a canister approved for storing fuel. Pour oil into canister first, then add gasoline and mix thoroughly. Fueling N Open the filler cap. N Filling up with fuel N Close the filler cap. Storing Fuel Store fuel only in approved safety-type fuel canisters in a dry, cool and safe location protected from light and the sun. After fueling, tighten down the filler cap as securely as possible by hand.

Lift the tabs of the adjusters to loosen the straps. D Close and lock the quick-release fastener by pushing it together. Squeeze the hooks to open the quick-release fastener. 271BA049 KN 271BA048 KN 1 N Close the waist belt (1) and adjust it so that it fits snugly against your hip.
English Throwing off the backpack The machine and backpack must be quickly thrown off in an emergency. The waist belt must be opened before throwing the machine to the ground. Positions of slide control Starting / Stopping the Engine 6 This machine is extremely simple and easy to start, even for children – risk of accidents. Do not allow children or other unauthorized persons to attempt to start or otherwise use the machine: – Never leave the machine unattended during work breaks.
English Stopping the Engine Adjusting the throttle cable N 271BA060 KN N N Left hand on the loop handle, right hand on the control handle, cutting attachment just above the ground. Check that the cutting attachment is not touching the ground of any other obstacles. The throttle cable must be positioned parallel to the flexible shaft, not wrapped around it. N Make sure you have a firm footing. N Set the slide control to F.
English Operating Instructions During break-in period Cleaning the Air Filter Adjusting the Carburetor If there is a noticeable loss of engine power A factory-new machine should not be run at high revs (full throttle off load) for the first three tank fillings. This avoids unnecessary high loads during the break-in period. As all moving parts have to bed in during the break-in period, the frictional resistances in the engine are greater during this period.
English Erratic idling behavior, poor acceleration Idle setting is too lean. LA N Carry out the standard setting. N Turn the low speed screw (L) slowly counterclockwise until the engine runs and accelerates smoothly. N Turn high speed screw (H) counterclockwise as far as stop (no more than 3/4 turn). It is usually necessary to change the setting of the idle speed screw (LA) after every correction to the low speed screw (L).
English Installing the spark plug N Clean dirty spark plug. N Check electrode gap (A) and readjust if necessary – see "Specifications". N Rectify the problems which have caused fouling of the spark plug. 2 STIHL recommends that you have servicing and repair work carried out exclusively by an authorized STIHL servicing dealer. 3 Possible causes are: – Too much oil in fuel mix. – Dirty air filter. – Unfavorable running conditions.
English Lubricating the Flexible Shaft 3 2 271BA022 KN 2 233BA010 KN 1 1 N Check the grease level regularly – about every 25 hours of operation. N Check the film of lubricant after about every 25 hours of operation. N Unscrew the filler plug (1). If no grease can be seen on the inside of the filler plug, screw the tube (2) of STIHL gear lubricant for brushcutters (special accessory) into the filler hole. N Press down the lever (1) on the powerhead. N Pull out the flexible shaft.
English Storing the Machine The starter mechanism consists of: For periods of 3 months or longer – Starter motor N – Spring Drain and clean the fuel tank in a well ventilated area. – Starter gear N N Have the starter gear lubricated every 12 months. Dispose of fuel properly in accordance with local environmental requirements. N Run the engine until the carburetor is dry – this helps prevent the carburetor diaphragms sticking together. N Remove, clean and inspect the cutting tool.
English Balancing N 32 After resharpening about 5 times, check the cutting attachment for out-of-balance on a STIHL balancer (special accessory) or have it checked by a dealer and rebalanced as necessary – STIHL recommends a STIHL servicing dealer.
