Careless or improper use may cause serious or fatal injury.

STIHL recommends that the circular saw blade be applied to the right of the tree, using the non-shaded area of the blade, as shown in the illustration above. The risk of kickout is highest when cutting in the darker shaded area. To reduce the risk of kickout and resulting injury, do not use this area of the circular saw blade for cutting trees or shrubs.

Always press spark plug boot snugly onto spark plug terminal of the proper size. (Note: If terminal has detachable SAE adapter nut, it must be attached.) English / USA Fueling We recommend STIHL 50:1 two-stroke engine oil since it is specially formulated for use in STlHL engines. Do not use BIA or TCW rated (twostroke water cooled) mix oils or other mix oils that state they are for use in both water cooled and air cooled engines (e.g., outboard motors, snowmobiles, chainsaws, mopeds, etc.). Take care when handling gasoline. Avoid direct contact with the skin and avoid inhaling fuel vapor.

Before storing your machine for a long period, drain and clean the fuel tank. Run the engine until the carburetor is dry. This is the starting throttle position.
English / USA If the engine does not start : Choke knob 002BA072 KN When the engine begins to fire: Pull the starter grip slowly with your right hand until you feel it engage and then give it a brisk strong pull. Do not pull out the starter rope to full length – it might otherwise break. : Do not let the starter grip snap back. Guide it slowly back into the housing so that the starter rope can rewind properly. : Continue cranking until engine runs.
English / USA Operating Instructions : Unscrew and dry off the spark plug. During break-in period : Open the throttle wide. : Crank the engine several times with the starter to clear the combustion chamber. A factory new machine should not be run at high revs (full throttle off load) for the first three tank fillings. This avoids unnecessary high loads during the break-in period.
English / USA Motor Management : Remove the filter element and inspect it – replace if dirty or damaged – do not clean. : Install filter element in the cover. : Refit the filter cover. Adjusting the Carburetor Exhaust emissions are controlled by the design of the fundamental engine parameters and components (e.g. carburation, ignition, timing and valve or port timing) without the addition of any major hardware.
English / USA Standard Setting : Shut off the engine. : Mount the cutting tool. : Check the air filter and replace if necessary. : Check that throttle cable is properly adjusted – readjust if necessary – see chapter "Adjusting the Throttle Cable". : Turn high speed screw (H) counterclockwise (max. 3/4 turn) as far as stop. : Carefully screw the low speed screw (L) down onto its seat. Then open it one turn counterclockwise. : Start the engine and run it until it is warm.
English / USA Checking the Spark Plug Cutting tool rotates when engine is idling : If engine is down on power, difficult to start or runs poorly at idling speed, first check the spark plug. Turn idle speed screw (LA) slowly counterclockwise until cutting tool stops rotating and then turn the screw about another 1/2 to 1turn in the same direction. : Idle setting too lean: Turn low speed screw (L) counterclockwise (about 1/4 turn) until the engine runs and accelerates smoothly.
English / USA Lubricating the Gearbox If engine running behavior is unsatisfactory even though the air filter is clean and the carburetor and throttle cable are properly adjusted, the cause may be in the muffler. 2 1 2 Have your STIHL dealer inspect the muffler for carbonization. Ease the cap (5) out of the starter grip. : Remove remaining rope from the rotor and grip. : Remove the screws (1). : : Lift away the fan housing. : Remove the spring clip (2). : Carefully remove the rope rotor with washer (3) and pawl (4).
English / USA : 7 Let go of rope slowly so that it winds onto the rotor. The starter grip must locate firmly in the rope guide bush. If the grip droops to one side: Add one more turn on rope rotor to increase spring tension. When the starter rope is fully extended it must still be possible to rotate the rotor another 1 1/2 turns. If this is not the case, the spring is overtensioned and could break.
