English Guide to Using this Manual Caution where there is a risk of damaging the machine or its individual components. Pictograms The meanings of the pictograms attached to the machine are explained in this manual. Depending on the model concerned, the following pictograms may be attached to your machine.
English Do not lend or rent your power tool without the User Manual. Be sure that anyone using it understands the information contained in this manual. The use of machines that emit noise may be limited to certain hours of the day as specified by national and/or regional or local regulations. Anyone operating the machine must be well rested, in good physical health and in good mental condition.
English By vehicle: When transporting in a vehicle, properly secure your machine to prevent turnover, damage and fuel spillage. Refueling Gasoline is an extremely flammable fuel. Keep clear of naked flames. Do not spill any fuel – do not smoke.
English Holding and guiding the machine While working Always hold the unit firmly with both hands on the handles. Wrap your fingers and thumbs around the handles. In the event of impending danger or in an emergency, switch off the engine immediately – move the Master Control Lever in the direction of STOP or †. 0008BA001 KN Right-handed users Right hand on the control handle and left hand on the handlebar.
English dizziness, or impaired concentration – these symptoms may possibly be the result of too-high exhaust gas concentration – Risk of accidents! Operate your power tool so that it produces a minimum of noise and emissions – do not run the engine unnecessarily, accelerate the engine only when working. To reduce the risk of fire, do not smoke while operating or standing near your power tool. Combustible fuel vapor may escape from the fuel system.
English The period of usage is shortened by: – Any personal tendency to suffer from poor circulation (symptoms: frequently cold fingers, tingling sensations). – Low outside temperatures. – The force with which the handles are held (a tight grip restricts circulation). Continual and regular users should monitor closely the condition of their hands and fingers. If any of the above symptoms appear (e.g. tingling sensation in fingers), seek medical advice.
English Horizontal cut Working Technique Fuel Vertical cut Your engine requires a mixture of gasoline and engine oil. WARNING For health reasons, avoid direct skin contact with gasoline and avoid inhaling gasoline vapor. Swing the cutting blade from the bottom upwards in an arc – lower the nose of the blade, move along the hedge and then swing the blade up again in an arc.
English Engine Oil If you mix the fuel yourself, use only STIHL two-stroke engine oil or another high-performance engine oil in accordance with JASO FB, JASO FC, JASO FD, ISO-L-EGB, ISO-L-EGC or ISO-L-EGD. STIHL specifies STIHL HP Ultra twostroke engine oil or an equivalent highperformance engine oil in order to maintain emission limits over the machine’s service life.
English N Turn the cap counterclockwise (about a quarter turn). 001BA235 KN 001BA234 KN 001BA232 KN Closing N Fold the grip down. Fit the cap – marks on tank cap and fuel tank must line up. N Press the cap down as far as stop. 001BA234 KN N Tank cap is locked. 001BA233 KN Marks on tank cap and fuel tank must line up. 001BA237 KN N Take care not to spill fuel while fueling and do not overfill the tank. STIHL recommends you use the STIHL filler nozzle for fuel (special accessory).
English Choke closed l – this position is used to start a cold engine. The Master Control lever moves to the normal run position F when the throttle trigger is squeezed. Left: 001BA239 KN Right: Bottom of cap is twisted – inner mark (1) in line with outer mark. Bottom of cap in correct position – inner mark is under the grip. It is not in line with the outer mark. N Place the cap on the opening and rotate it counterclockwise until it engages the filler neck.
English Warm engine (warm start) Start the engine. 1 N Press the manual fuel pump bulb at least five times – even if the bulb is filled with fuel. N Set the Master Control lever to suit the engine temperature. Cold engine (cold start) 1 Depress the throttle trigger lockout (1) and the throttle trigger (2) at the same time – hold both levers in that position. N Move the Master Control lever (3) to n. N Release the throttle trigger lockout (1), throttle trigger (2) and Master Control lever.
English run position F. After a cold start, warm up the engine by opening the throttle several times. Engine does not start in warm start position n. N WARNING Make sure the carburetor is correctly adjusted. The cutting attachment must not rotate when the engine is idling. Move the Master Control lever to l and continue cranking until the engine runs. If the engine does not start N Check that all settings are correct. Your machine is now ready for operation.
English Cleaning the Air Filter Adjusting the Carburetor Spark Arresting Screen in Muffler The carburetor has been set at the factory to provide an optimum fuel-air mixture under most operating conditions. If there is a noticeable loss of engine power N Adjusting Idle Speed WARNING Wait for the engine to cool down completely before performing this work. H N Loosen the captive screw (1) and remove the filter cover (2). N Clean away loose dirt from around the filter.
English Checking the Spark Plug 2 N Fit a new spark plug after about 100 operating hours – or sooner if the electrodes are badly eroded. Install only suppressed spark plugs of the type approved by STIHL – see "Specifications". Removing the Spark Plug 1 N Remove the spark plug boot (2) using a suitable tool (e.g. combination wrench). N Unscrew the spark plug. WARNING Arcing may occur if the adapter nut (1) is loose or missing.
English Commercial usage only – check every 25 hours of operation NOTICE Use STIHL gear lubricant for hedge trimmers (special accessory) to lubricate the blade drive gear. 1 1 0000-GXX-3986-A0 1 Remove the screws (1) from the underside of the unit. N Remove the retaining plate (2) and gearbox cover (3). 6 4 N 16 5 Unscrew the filler plug (1). If no grease can be seen on the inside of the filler plug, screw the tube (2) of STIHL gear lubricant (special accessory) into the filler hole.
English Storing the Machine For periods of 3 months or longer N Clean the cutting blades, check condition and spray them with STIHL resin solvent. N Drain and clean the fuel tank in a well ventilated area. N Dispose of fuel properly in accordance with local environmental requirements. N Run the engine until the carburetor is dry – this helps prevent the carburetor diaphragms sticking together. N Fit the blade scabbard.
