Introduction 1 DATA SILO® DS500 INTRODUCTION Packaging Information The StorCase Technology Data Silo® external expansion chassis is shipped in a container designed to provide protection and prevent damage during shipment. The Data Silo was carefully inspected before and during the packing procedure at the factory. Evidence of any damage to the Data Silo should be reported to the shipper immediately.
2 Introduction General Description The StorCase Technology Data Silo® DS500 SCSI expansion chassis provides rugged and reliable housing for 5.25" or 3.5" form factor, full-height, half-height, or low-profile (up to 1" high) SCSI devices. DS500 units accommodate standard SCSI hard disks, tape drives, optical drives, RAID controllers, and other SCSI devices, as well as the StorCase Data Express® removable device enclosures.
Introduction 3 Installation Overview (See Figure 2) This User's Guide describes the steps required for installing drive(s) into the Data Silo DS500 tower or rack mount external expansion chassis. For consistency, most illustrations depict the DS500 rack mount model. Although cosmetically different on the exterior, the tower and rack mount models are identical on the interior. Where appropriate, instructions and illustrations specific to the tower version of the DS500 are included.
4 Introduction DS500 Front Panel (See Figure 3) The front panel display contains seven (7) lights which provide the following information: Power-On - Steady green glow indicates that power is being supplied to the Data Silo chassis. Temperature Warning - Flashing red indicates that internal operating temperature has reached 40º C (104° F). Power to the installed drives shuts down when temperature reaches 45º C (113° F). Fan Failure - Flashing red indicates a fan is running slow or has failed.
Introduction 5 DS500 Rear Panel (See Figure 4) Cooling Fans - Two (2) internal power supply fans and two (2) hot swappable fan modules provide high power cooling and ample chassis ventilation. SCSI I/O Connectors - The DS500 chassis is unwired and comes equipped with rear panel cut outs for up to two I/Os. Up to four I/Os may be supported (with the addition of internal cables) and by swapping out one of the rear cooling fans with one of the optional I/O panels (either DX500-PAN or DX500-DVHD).
6 Installation DS500 INSTALLATION Installing the Drive(s) Into the DS500 While performing the steps in this section, work on a soft surface to prevent excessive shock to the drive(s) and to protect the finish of the chassis. Refer to the documentation provided with the drive(s) to be installed to identify appropriate connectors, jumpers, and terminators on each. A #2 Phillips and a flat blade screwdriver will be required.

8 Installation Figure 6: StorCase Technology, Inc. DS500 Tower Cover Removal DS500 User's Guide - Rev.
Installation 9 Drive Preparation 1. Remove the drive from its protective packaging. 2. Plastic Drive Bezel - If installing a hard drive which is equipped with a plastic front bezel, remove the drive bezel. 3. SCSI Drive Termination - The last drive on any SCSI channel must have termination enabled. In most instances, depending upon the cable configuration, termination will be handled by an external terminator on the DS500 back panel. If using an external terminator, disable onboard drive termination.

Installation 11 Drive Installation 1. For fixed media devices: Install the drive activity and drive fault LEDs into the appropriate front filler panels. Gently push each LED into the rear of the filler panel as shown in Figure 9 below. For front-loading devices: Remove the appropriate filler panels from the DS500.
12 Installation 3. Attach the drive activity and drive fault indicator LED cables to the appropriate drive pins (refer to the device manufacturer's documentation for the location of these pins). 4. Install the drive(s) into the drive mounting bracket using four (4) #6-32 x 1/4" screws (Figure 11). Be careful not to pinch or crimp attached cables. Do not fully tighten the screws at this point.
Installation 13 SCSI Cable Connections Figure 12: Typical Internal SCSI Cable Configuration DS500 User's Guide - Rev. E00 StorCase Technology, Inc.
14 Installation Connecting the DS500 to a Computer System If the DS500 is the last SCSI device on the SCSI bus, it will require the appropriate termination for the I/O connector. Refer to Figure 13 below for typical single and multiple host external SCSI connections. Follow the directions that came with your computer system for cabling an external SCSI device to that system. Figure 13: External SCSI Cable Connections StorCase Technology, Inc. DS500 User's Guide - Rev.
Installation 15 DS500 Status Signal Access Jumper The DS500 provides chassis status signals for use by a RAID or system controller. These status signals identify: Chassis Over Temperature Condition Fan Failure(s) Power Supply Failure(s) Chassis Failure (Combination of Over Temp and/or Failures) Status signals are accessed on Jumper P4 located on the DS500 Power Distribution Board inside of the DS500 chassis (Figure 14). Signal/pin assignments on P4 are also identified.
16 Installation DS500 Daughterboard Jumpers Depending on which revision of the DS500 chassis was purchased (hardware revision number can be found on the product identification label), either 0, 1, or 3 jumpers must be installed on specific pins to provide appropriate cooling fan signal levels. Hardware Revision Number: G00 through H01 H02 H03 and higher Jumpers required on JP11, JP12, and JP14 Jumper required on JP12 No jumpers required Figure 15: DS500 Daughterboard StorCase Technology, Inc.

28 Appendix B - Optional Accessories Replacement Fan Module (cont'd) Should a rear panel fan slow down or fail, a red indicator light on the front panel will flash. Fan Error Indicator NOTE: Only the rear panel fan modules may be replaced. The two (2) internal power supply fans are not removable. A visual inspection of the rear panel fans will determine which of the two (2) fans is malfunctioning.
Appendix B - Optional Accessories 29 Replacing a Power Supply The DS500 comes equipped with two (2) power supply units. This allows the DS500 chassis to run in Shared Mode, thus enabling both power supplies to operate at a reduced wattage and lower operating temperature. If one power supply should fail, the other will carry the full load without interruption. Figure B-8: Replacing a Power Supply 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
30 Appendix C - Stacking Multiple DS500 Units Together Appendix C - Stacking Multiple DS500 Units Together The DS500 is designed so that multiple units may be stacked in a rack unit, cabled, and fastened together as in a multi-rank RAID configuration. Detachable cable access covers, located on both the top and the bottom of each DS500, provide convenient access to chain I/O cables between multiple units. Follow the instructions below to attach multiple DS500 units together.
