B. Ladder Assembly
1. See Figs. 8 & 9 for ladder locations. On a 2" x 4" x
78" board, mark rung holes as dimensioned in Fig. 7.
Drill holes through the 2" x 4" using a 1-1/8" spade bit.
2. Place the 2" x 4" x 78" board against the 4" x 4" leg of
the frame as shown in Fig. 8. Using the 2" x 4" as a
template, mark hole locations on the 4" x 4" leg.
Remove the 2" x 4" board, set it aside, and drill four 1-
1/8" diameter rung holes, approximately 1-1/2" deep,
in the 4" x 4" leg.
3. Insert the hardwood dowels through holes in the 2" x
4". Align the end of the dowels flush with the outside
edge of the 2" x 4". Secure by driving an 8D
galvanized nail through the 2" x 4" into the dowel.
NOTE: Due to hardness of the dowels, it may be
necessary to predrill holes (using a 1/8" drill bit) to
avoid bending nails.

4. Insert dowels into holes drilled in
the 4" x 4" leg (Fig. 9). NOTE: The
inside width of the ladder at
comple-tion should be
approximately 21" but may vary
with wood dimension variances.
Secure dowels, as before, by
driving an 8D galvanized nail
through the 4" x 4" into the dowel
(predrill if necessary). TIP: Hold a
scrap piece of lumber next to the 2"
x 4" ladder leg and strike it with a
hammer to help drive the ladder
rungs into the holes in the 4" x 4"
corner post.
5. Nail the 2" x 4" in place using two
16D galvanized nails per joint. Nail
through the 2" x 6" deck and
bottom supports into the 2" x 4"
ladder leg (see Fig. 9).
6. Attach the 2" x 4" x 26" to unit as
indicated in Fig. 9 using two 16D
galvanized nails per joint.
