93 Chapter 11: Discover Various Applications with Package Center
Directory Server: Directory Server provides LDAP service with centralized access control, authentication, and
account management. You can manage LDAP users and groups with this package.
Download Station: Download Station is a web-based download application, allowing you to download files
from the Internet through BT, FTP, HTTP, NZB and eMule. With Download Station, you can download files
from file hosting sites, and search for torrent files via system default search engines as well as self-added ones
with the BT search function.
iTunes Server: iTunes Server allows you to share the music and videos on your DiskStation with all iTunes
clients within a local network, and to browse and play these multimedia contents with iTunes. iTunes Server
also provides the Smart Playlist feature, enabling you to create playlists containing songs that match the
criteria you specify.
Mail Station: Mail Station 2 provides a webmail service for you to access mails stored on your DiskStation. In
addition, you can also receive mails from any other mail servers to keep all your emails in one convenient
place.
Media Server: Media Server provides a multimedia service for you to browse and play the multimedia contents
on Synology DiskStation via DLNA/UPnP home devices. With Media Server, you can easily connect those
devices such as TV sets and stereo systems to your home network, and stream multimedia files stored on
DiskStation to the devices to enjoy music, photos, and videos.
Photo Station: Photo Station is an online photo album integrated with a blog for you to easily share photos,
videos, and blog over the Internet. Moreover, you can also browse photos and watch videos saved on your
DiskStation with your iPhone, iPad and Android mobiles on the go.
Syslog Server: Syslog Server offers an easy solution for gathering and displaying log messages from network
devices. It provides you with a centralized log management interface and the flexible search function to help
you find the useful information efficiently.
Time Backup: Time Backup is an innovative solution that backs up DiskStation data in multiple versions. You
could intuitively browse among versions and easily restore data to any version of specific time.
VPN Server: VPN Server offers an easy VPN solution that turns your DiskStation into a VPN server, providing
a secure way of connecting to a private LAN at a remote location. Both PPTP and OpenVPN services are
supported.
Manage Packages
Follow the instructions in this section to install/uninstall, run, update, and check the packages.
To install package(s), do either of the following:
Under the Available tab, you can see a list of available packages. Click Install to install the packages you
want. Installed packages will be moved to the Installed tab.
If you want to install a package by uploading the .spk file (available at Synology's Download Center or the
third party websites), click Install / Update and follow the wizard to install the new package.
To run or stop package services:
Under the Installed tab, click Run or Stop to run or stop the services.
To update installed package, do either of the following:
When package updates are available, you will see the Update buttons under the Installed tab. Click those
buttons to update the packages.
If you want to update a package by uploading the .spk file (available at Synology's Download Center or the
third party websites), click Install / Update and follow the wizard to update the package.
Note: If you want to receive email or desktop notification when updates are available, click Settings, tick the
checkboxes, and then click OK.
To see the information about a package:
Under the Installed or Available tab, click More to check the package's information. Click Close to finish.
To uninstall an existing package:
1 Under the Installed tab, click the icon of the application which you want to remove.
2 In the window that appears, click Uninstall and then Yes to uninstall the package.
