1 Chapter Before You Start Thank you for purchasing this Synology product! Before setting up your new Synology NAS, please check the package contents to verify that you have received the items below. Also, make sure to read the safety instructions carefully to avoid harming yourself or damaging your Synology NAS. Safety Instructions Keep away from direct sunlight and away from chemicals. Make sure the environment does not experience abrupt changes in temperature or humidity. Place the product right side up at all times. Do not place near any liquids. Before cleaning, unplug the power cord. Wipe with damp paper towels. Do not use chemical or aerosol cleaners. To prevent the unit from falling over, do not place on carts or any unstable surfaces. The power cord must plug in to the correct supply voltage.
2 Chapter Hardware Setup Tools and Parts for Drive Installation • A screwdriver • At least one 3.5” or 2.5” SATA drive (please visit www.synology.com for compatible drive models) Warning: If you install a drive that contains data, the system will format the drive and erase all existing data. Please back up any important data before installation. Install Drives 1 Remove the 4 screws that secure the back cover by hand, and then put the back cover down carefully.
3 Load drives in the drive trays. • For 3.5” drives: Place the drive in the drive tray. Then tighten the screws to secure the drive in place. • For 2.5” drives: Place the drive in the blue area (shown below) of the drive tray. Turn the tray upside down and tighten the screws to secure the drive in place. 4 Insert the loaded drive tray into the empty drive bay. Note: Make sure the drive tray is completely inserted. Otherwise, the drive might not be able to function properly.
6 Drives are numbered as shown below. • For 3.5” drives only: It is recommended that you secure the drive trays with the screws (for securing drive trays) provided. For drives without the central mounting holes, you can skip this step. 7 Place the upper case back to its position.
8 Close the back cover. Replace and tighten the 4 screws you removed in step 1. Note: If you want to create a RAID volume, we recommend that all installed drives are of the same size to make the best use of drive capacity. Start Up Your Synology NAS 1 Connect the AC adapter to the power port of the Synology NAS. Connect one end of the AC power cord to the AC power adapter, and the other to the power outlet. 2 Use the LAN cable to connect the Synology NAS to your switch, router, or hub.

3 Chapter System Maintenance Replace the Malfunctioning Fan If the cooling fan located on the back of the Synology NAS malfunctions, please follow the steps below to remove the malfunctioning fan and replace it with a new one. 1 Power off the Synology NAS and remove the power cord. 2 Follow step 1 of the Install Drives section to open the back cover. 3 Loosen the screws that secure the fan on the back cover as shown below. Find the power cord of the fan and carefully unplug it.
6 Plug the power cord of the new fan into the Synology NAS. Fans and ports are numbered as shown below. Note: Please insert the fan power cords to their corresponding ports. As illustrated above, attach fan 1 to port 1. This may influence the fan numbers displayed on the system when a fan malfunction occurs. 7 Tighten the screws that secure the fan, then close the back cover and tighten the screws which were removed in step 2.

4 Chapter Install DSM on Synology NAS After hardware setup is finished, please install DiskStation Manager (DSM) – Synology’s browser-based operating system – on your Synology NAS. Install DSM with Web Assistant Your Synology NAS comes with a built-in tool called Web Assistant that helps you download the latest version of DSM from the Internet and install it on your Synology NAS.
