Withdigitalnetworks,acallremainsclearandthendropsoffquicklyattheborderofacoveragearea.Thereasonfor
thisisthatadigitalcalliseitherreceivedoritisn't.Withanalognetworks,thebackgroundnoiseinacallgetspro-
gressivelyworsewhentheuserisinfringeareasorevenslightlyoutsidenormalcoverageareas.
What is audible on an analog channel
Onanalogchannels,theradiomaybeprogrammedsothatallconversationsonachannelcanbeheard,oroneuser
groupmaybesegregatedfromotherusergroupsthroughspecialsignaling.Thespecialsignalingisusedtocontrolthe
mutingandunmutingofradios,sothatyourradioismutedwhenotherusergroupsaretalkingandunmutedformem-
bersofyourusergroup.
Therearetwomutingcontrolsthatoperateinyourradio:
signalingmute
squelch
Signalingmute
Theradio’ssignalingmuteonlyallowstheradiotounmuteiftheincomingcallcarriesthetonesspecifictoyouruser
group.Yourusergroupmayusetonesthatareeitheraudible,subaudibleorboth.
Squelch
Theradio’ssquelchallowstheradiotounmuteonlywhenthestrengthoftheincomingsignalisaboveapre-
determinedthreshold.Thismeansthatonlysignalsofreasonableintelligibilityaremadeaudible.
