LMZ14201H www.ti.com SNVS690E – JANUARY 2011 – REVISED OCTOBER 2013 COT CONTROL CIRCUIT OVERVIEW Constant On Time control is based on a comparator and an on-time one shot, with the output voltage feedback compared to an internal 0.8V reference. If the feedback voltage is below the reference, the high-side MOSFET is turned on for a fixed on-time determined by a programming resistor RON. RON is connected to VIN such that ontime is reduced with increasing input supply voltage.

A feed-forward capacitor is placed in parallel with RFBT to improve load step transient response.

RON should be selected such that the on-time at maximum VIN is greater than 150 ns. The on-timer has a limiter to ensure a minimum of 150 ns for tON.

From an EMI reduction standpoint, it is imperative to minimize the high di/dt paths during PC board layout. The high current loops that do not overlap have high di/dt content that will cause observable high frequency noise on the output pin if the input capacitor (Cin1) is placed at a distance away from the LMZ14201H.

Referring to the Functional Block Diagram, when the top MOSFET is turned off, the inductor current flows through the load, the PGND pin and the internal synchronous MOSFET. If this current exceeds the ICL value, the current limit comparator disables the start of the next on-time period.
