Section 3 - Warnings WARNING DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur • Failure to follow these instructions and Infant Seat • • • • labels can result in injury or death to a child from striking the vehicle’s interior during a sudden stop or crash. - Even if the Infant Seat seems easy to use on your own, it is important to read these instructions and the vehicle owner’s manual for details you might miss. The instructions in this manual and in your vehicle owner’s manual must be followed carefully.
WARNING DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur • Direct sunlight can make Infant Seat surfaces hot enough to burn your child. Use caution and check the vehicle and Infant Seat on hot, sunny days. • NEVER leave child unattended under any circumstance. • DO NOT use this Infant Seat if it has been in a crash. (There may be hidden damage and it must be replaced.) Your insurance company may provide some assistance replacing this infant seat.
Section 4 - Use Recommendations The First Years advises parents that children should use a child restraint with a built-in harness system until they exceed the weight or height limits specified by the manufacturer. I440 Infant Seat Use Requirements: This child restraint is designed for use by children whose: - Weight is between 4 and 22 lbs (1,8 and 10 kg), and - Height 30 inches or less (76 cm). Child MUST meet both of these requirements to use this Infant Seat.

Section 6 - Selecting A Vehicle Seating Location WARNING DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur • Use only in a rear facing position when using this restraint in a vehicle. • DO NOT use this infant seat in a forward facing position. • Only use this Infant Seat with the vehicle’s seat belts or LATCH System. • DO NOT use this Infant Seat with vehicle seat belts WARNING mounted to the vehicle door or door frame. • DO NOT use this Infant Seat if it cannot be properly installed.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) alerts vehicle owners that, according to accident statistics, children under age 13 are safer when properly restrained in the rear seating positions rather than in front seating positions. 2. Refer to vehicle owner’s manual for car seat installation instructions for your specific vehicle. - Use of Infant Seat in a vehicle rear seat location.

Vehicle Seats: DO NOT use this Infant Seat with the following vehicle seats: NO Seats Which Face Sides Of Vehicle NO Seats Which Face Rear Of Vehicle 4. Latch Bar Location NO Rear Seats Of Small Extended Cab Pickup Trucks Consult your automobiles owner’s manual or manufacturer for location and availability of LATCH anchor points.
Section 6 - Selecting A Vehicle Seating Location 5. Vehicle Seat Belt Systems: Use only the vehicle’s lap and shoulder belt, lap belt or LATCH system when restraining this Infant Seat. Design and operation of vehicle seat belt systems vary from vehicle to vehicle and from seating location to seating in the same vehicle. Not all vehicle seat belts betls can be used with a child restraint. Refer to the information in this section information on the various types of vehicle seat belt systems.
Section 6 - Selecting A Vehicle Seating Location LAP BELTS Manually-adjusted lap belt sse rP This type of lap belt is tightened by pulling on the excess belt once it is buckled. Lap belt with automatic locking retractor(ALR) sse rP This belt system’s retractor locks automatically and does not allow the lap belt to lengthen once it is buckled. Tighten by feeding the autobelt back into the retractor while pushing down on the infant restraint.
Section 6 - Selecting A Vehicle Seating Location Unsafe Vehicle Seat Belt Systems cont.Lap and Shoulder Belt with Dual Retractors Do Not Use!- Each autobelt Strap has a retractor at each end and is attached to the latch plate at one end. 6. Vehicle Seat Belt Retractors Consult your vehicle’s owners manual for types of retractors that are in your automobile and the function of the retractors.
WARNING DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur • Use only in a rear facing position when using this restraint in a vehicle. • Use only with children who weigh between 4 and 22 pounds (1,8 and 10 kg) or less and whose height is 30 inches (76 cm) or less. • Snugly adjust the belts (Harness) provided with this child restraint around your child. • Secure this child restraint with the vehicle’s child restraint Anchorage system (LATCH) if available or with a vehicle belt.
Section 7 - Installation and Use Base Installation - 7.1 1. Level Vehicle - Check to make sure vehicle is on a level surface. 2- Leveling base. ↑ This carrier must always be used with the base. Rear of Vehicle - Place seat in base and check level indicator to see if base is level. LEVEL is indicated by the ball being completely in the green area. - Pull out on the yellow release knob and slide the angle foot to raise the base or to lower the base angle.
Section 7 - Installation and Use 7.2-Auto Belt - Base Installation with Lap Belt 1- After Ball is in the green area on Level indicator, open Lock Off and thread auto safety belt through the labeled “Belt Here” auto safety belt path. 2- Press down on base with knee, tighten auto belt and insert buckle tongue into buckle. Close and secure “Lock Off” to eliminate slippage. Pull on auto safety belt to ensure the auto buckle is secure. 3- CHECK level indicator to ensure the ball is in the green area.
Section 7 - Installation and Use 7.2.1-Auto Belt - Base Installation with Lap and Shoulder Belt 1- After Ball is in the green area on Level indicator, open Lock Off and thread auto safety belt through the labeled “Belt Here” auto safety belt path. Shoulder Belt 2- Press down on base with knee, tighten auto belt and insert buckle tongue into buckle. Close and secure “Lock Off” to eliminate slippage. Pull on auto safety belt to ensure the auto buckle is secure.
Section 7 - Installation and Use CRS Connector LATCH Anchor Points- 7.3 1. Consult your automobile’s owners manual or manufacturer for location and availability of LATCH lower anchor points. 2 - Remove BOTH LATCH Lower Anchor connectorc from the LATCH Lower Anchor storage compartment. 3- Attach the right and left LATCH Lower Anchor to the anchor points. Press down on the base with your knee and pull up on the webbing loop until the webbing is taut.
Section 7 - Installation and Use CRS Locking Clip Installation 7.4 1. A Free Sliding Latch Plate will require the use of a locking clip if the Lock Off feature is not used. The First Years requires the use of the Lock Off at all times. 2 - A locking clip may be purchased by calling Learning Curve 1-888-899-2229. 3- Follow the base installation on pages 15 to 19. This carrier must always be used with the base. 1in.
Section 7 - Installation and Use ↑ Installing Carrier onto the Base Rear of Vehicle 7.5 1- Ensure base is installed correctly as described in the Base Installation section before installing the Infant seat. This carrier must always be used with the base. 2 - Lower Infant seat on to the base. 3- NOTE-You should hear a positive click when the Infant Seat is installed correctly. Pull up on the Infant Seat handle to ensure the Infant Seat is attached to the base. see figure 1 .

Section 7 - Installation and Use Handle - 7.7 1. Positioning of Handle - Press red button on both sides of the handle to move handle. - Only use position A to carry the Infant Seat. C B A D E 2- Check That Handle is Locked - Before the Infant seat is lifted for any reason, check to make sure handle is locked into position by pushing forward and pulling back on the handle. 3- Handle position in auto - Never have handle in position A when infant seat is installed in the automobile.
Section 7 - Installation and Use I440 Removal from base 7.8 1- Grip red handle and gently pull up. 2- Pull straight up on the I440 by the handle and the front or back edge. WARNING • Prevent injury.
Section 7 - Installation and Use Harness System 7.9 A Chest Clip1- To Unlock - Squeeze center locking tabs - Pull Chest clip apart 2 - To Lock - Align locking tabs and press Chest Clip together until tabs snap into place. Note: Try to pull Chest Clip apart to ensure the clip is locked. WARNING • Prevent injury.
Section 7 - Installation and Use Harness System B 5 Point Buckle3- To UnLock - Press red center button until the 5 Point Buckle releases. - Pull Buckle Tongue from Buckle 4- 5 Point Buckle To Lock - Align Buckle Tongues and insert both Buckle Tongues into Buckle until Buckle Tongues lock in place. Note: Try to remove Buckle Tongues from Buckle to ensure the Buckle is locked. WARNING • Prevent injury.

C Harness Adjuster 5- To loosen harness system - The Harness Adjuster is located at the Lower end of the Infant Seat between the child’s feet. - Press the yellow center button and pull the harness system outward from the seat back over the baby’s shoulder. 6- To Tighten Harness System - Lock Chest Clip and 5 Point Buckle. Pull Harness webbing out until harness is snug over the child’s shoulder. - Note: A snug strap should not allow any slack.

D Shoulder Height Adjustment 7- To Raise or Lower Harness - Loosen harness system. - Pull out the yellow adjustment knob located on the seat back and . slide the adjustment to either the upper or lower slot depending upon the height of the child. - Note: After adjustment for shoulder height, move yellow knob up and down to ensure the yellow knob has engaged. ● - Note:The harness should be at or below the shoulder of the child.
Section 7 - Installation and Use Canopy - 7.10 1. Installation To install Canopy - Insert Canopy post until the canopy clicks into place. Note:The pivoting canopy rod must be at the back of the seat. 1 1 A 2- Rotation - The canopy has a full rotation. - Push or pull to raise or lower into desired location. Cold Weather Boot / Cover- 7.11 1- Installation(Not included with all models) - Slide boot / cover over the front A on the Infant seat. - Secure boot / cover by fastening snaps to canopy post snaps.
Section 7 - Installation and Use Head Bolster - 7.12 1- Positioning/Removal - The Head Bolster is held in place with hook and loop fasteners. The top inside of the Head Bolster should be as close to the top of the child’s head as possible. Babies with Low Birth Weight 7.13 - Rolled towels can be added for side support for smaller infant. - Add a rolled wash cloth for added support between the crotch belt and the infant. WARNING • Prevent injury.
Section 7 - Installation and Use Pad Removal -7.14 1-Unfasten outer snaps, remove canopy, head bolster and cold weather boot if included. 2-Loosen harness and place the harness out of the way as indicated in the picture. 3-Locate the Easy Off pad flaps and separate. 4-Pull harness through the slots in the Easy Off Pad. 4 5-Remove pad and launder per the instructions on page 36. WARNING • Prevent injury.
Section 7 - Installation and Use Pad Installation- 7.15 1. Lower dry pad on shell allowing the attachment flaps to remain open. 2. Pull harness through open flaps. Place harness in the harness location slots. Place harness to the side. . 3. Close flaps and secure with the hook and loop fastener. 4. Fasten outer snaps, replace Canopy Head Bolster. Section 8 - Safety Checklist/Safe Practices Safety Checklist √ Did you read and understand these instructions and labels on the Infant Seat? √ Is the child the proper weight and height for the Infant Seat? √ √ Is the child secured in the back seat? √ Did you pull the harness adjustor tight? You should not be able to pinch the harness if the harness is properly fastened.
Section 9 - Additional Information Certification: This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for use in motor vehicles. This Infant Seat is certified for use in motor vehicles. Aircraft Use: . This Restraint is Certified for Aircraft Use. Vehicle Seat Protection: Protect vehicle seat. Use a thin car seat mat, thin towel, or thin blanket under the Infant Seat.
Section 10 - Care and Cleaning Removing Seat Pad: - Gently unsnap metal snaps after following the directions .on page 32. Cleaning Seat Pad, Head Bolster and Canopy: - Hand wash in cool water and mild soap. - Air dry. Cleaning Shell: - Wipe with mild solution of soap and water. Avoid wetting labels. - Rinse with clean water. - Never use “household” detergents or solvents. Reattach Seat Pad: - Follow directions on page 33 to reattach pad. Section 11 - Replacement Parts We know pads get worn or damaged.
