14.1 Introduction
A BGAN terminal must undergo a type approval campaign and be type approved by
Inmarsat before it can be sold to customers. A type approval campaign will typically
comprise the steps shown in the figure below.
Upon completion of all the tests included in the type approval campaign, Inmarsat will
evaluate the test reports and if satisfied grant the user terminal type approval that will
give permission to release and start shipping the user terminal to customers.
For the BGAN XL Radio Module, a full type approval campaign has not been performed
as the RM does not implement a complete user terminal. However, a number of
mandatory type approval tests have been pre-approved by Inmarsat in order to ease
the type approval process for the user terminal. Refer to section 14.2 on page 14-6 for
more information.
14.1.1 Mandatory test requirements
The backbone of the type approval for any new BGAN terminal is formed by a set of
Mandatory Test Requirements (MTR) specified by Inmarsat. The MTRs are divided in
three groups namely:
•Physical Layer MTRs
•Protocol Layer MTRs

Important
It is the responsibility of the user terminal vendor to agree with Inmarsat
on the exact content of a type approval campaign before it is undertaken.
