Type approval
•Audio Tests MTRs
Normally, a product is required to pass all of the specified tests in order to be granted
a type approval. Some tests may be excluded though, if they do not apply to the
particular terminal class in question.
The MTRs are defined in documents which are written and provided to the terminal
manufacturers by Inmarsat. The actual MTR documents are covered by an NDA and
may not be reproduced here. The integrator can request them directly from Inmarsat.
An MTR document describes the general test setup for all the test cases defined in the
MTR. Each test case is defined by a purpose, a test procedure and a pass/fail criterion.
Typically the test procedure includes a script which performs the actual test.
The entire suite of MTR documents consists of around 35 documents, most of which
concern the physical layer. Each document covers a single functional area of a BGAN
terminal and will typically contain several test cases within the particular functional
area.
The full suite of MTR tests spans the entire set of requirements in the SDM from
hardware functions and performance, physical layer performance including modem
performance to a large number of protocol tests. Parsing the applicable MTRs will
prove that the terminal operates in accordance with the SDM, both with respect to the
physical layer and in relation to the Inmarsat Air Interface protocol (IAI2).
14.1.2 Pre-conditional type approval
The Pre-Conditional Type Approval (PCTA) serves as an Inmarsat approval milestone
that - when passed - will grant permission to operate the terminal on-air and start the
alpha test execution.
The PCTA campaign consists of execution and reporting of a selected and agreed
subset of the MTRs. The MTRs conducted during the PCTA is practically a full Inmarsat
Type Approval test, with the exception that the tests are performed in a laboratory
environment only. During the full Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) campaign, some tests
are repeated under different environmental conditions such as vibrations, humidity
and extreme temperatures, thus multiplying the test time with a factor of three or
more. However, functionally and performance-wise the PCTA contains exactly the same
tests as performed during the FAT. The PCTA test reports are reviewed by Inmarsat,
who grants the PCTA if the test results are satisfactory.
The PCTA will typically include the following tasks:
Test execution:
Selected set of BGAN Physical Layer Test (BPLT) scripts
Full set of BGAN Protocol Test (BPT) scripts
Test result reporting:
BPLT MTR test results
BPT test results
