14.3 Physical layer
The test setup for verification of the physical layers is based on a BPLT. The BPLT
executes MTR defined test scripts which are specially designed to verify the
performance of the BGAN physical layers.
The BPLT contains channel boards interfacing to the RF interface of the BGAN terminal
and an Ethernet interface connecting it to a data interface of the BGAN terminal as
shown in the following figure. The setup thus forms a closed loop enabling the BPLT to
control the BGAN terminal to send and receive different bearer types using various
channels while verifying performance.
The physical layer test campaign is based exclusively on the test suite defined by the
physical layer MTR documents, of which only a subset apply to the BGAN XL Radio
Module as the RM does not form a complete BGAN terminal. The following subsections
give an overview of the test suite developed to verify the performance of the BGAN
physical layer and identifies the pre-approved BGAN XL Radio Module subset using
the following nomenclature:
RM means that the sub-test is a part of the pre-approved test suite as the test
outcome is defined by the RM.
INT means that the test outcome is defined by other parts of a terminal than the RM
(e.g. HPA, LNA etc.) and is thus not a part of the RM pre-approval and should be
addressed by the integrator.
RM/INT means that the test is a part of the RM release test suite but it does not hold
a pre-approval as part of a BGAN terminal may affect the test outcome.
A blank field indicates that the given sub-test is not defined for the particular
terminal class.
Each sub test requires that the BGAN terminal under test can be controlled
independently of the bearer control layer. The RM supports this when operated in
BGAN BPLT mode as described in section 6.1 on page 6-2. When operated in BGAN
