Note:Afterareelhasrunforanextendedperiodof
timethebladecontactpointorlandareawillkeep
gettingwiderandeventuallywillbethefullblade
width.Thisisnormalanddoesnotmeanthatthereel
hastoberegroundtostayeffective.Acuttingunitcan
cuteffectivelywithfullwidthbladesiftheadjustment
ischeckedfrequentlytomaintainsharpcuttingedges.
Afterthereelandbedknifehavebeenground,perform
thefollowingadjustments:
1.Settheheightofcut.
2.Adjustthebedknifetothereel.
Note:Asthereelbladescontinuetorunagainst
thebedknifeaslightburrwillappearonthe
frontcuttingedgesurfacethefulllengthofthe
bedknife.Ifaleisoccasionallyrunacrossthe
frontedgetoremovethisburr,improvedcutting
canbeobtained.
Ifthereelbladeedgesandthebedknifeedge
areslightlyroundedanddonothavesevere
nicks,lappingonlywithalappingcompound
mayrestoretheedgesandmatch.Oftentimes
acuttingunitisdeemedbyuserstoneed
grindingwhenthereelbearingadjustment,
bedknifeadjustmentand/orlappingisallthatis
necessary.
LappingtheCuttingUnit
Preparethecuttingunitforlappingasfollows:
1.Removetherightwheel.
2.Placethewheelunderthegearcaseforsupport.
3.Removethereelpinioncover(Figure17).

5.Connectthelappingmachinecouplertothenut
ontheendofthereelshaft.
Whenlapping,useagoodgradeofcommercial
lappingcompound.Amediumgritshouldbe
forinitiallappingandanegritfornishing.A
solutionof1partliquiddetergentand2parts
lappingcompoundisrecommended.Theliquid
detergentgreatlyeaseswashingawaythe
compoundwhennished.Watersolubleoilmay
alsobeusedasacompoundcarrier.
