Operation
Note:Determinetheleftandrightsidesofthe
machinefromthenormaloperatingposition.
AdjustingtheBedknifeto
theReelforLightContact
Important:Afterthecuttingunitissetupand
installedonthetowingframe,thebedknifeand
reelmustbeadjustedforlightcontact.Adjust
thebedknifetothereelwhilethecuttingunit
issittingonthegrasstobecutbecausethe
forceofturfagainstundersideofbedknifeduring
actualoperationmustbeduplicatedtoensurethe
correctsetting.Toensuresharpcuttingedges,
thebedknifeandreelmusthavelightcontact.
1.Standbehindthecuttingunit.
2.Disengagethereelthrowoutknobs(Figure4).
Carefullyspinthereelbackwardtoensurefree
movement.
3.Whilespinningthereelbackward,rotatethe
bedknifeadjustingknobcounterclockwise
(Figure4)untilthebedknifedoesnottouchthe
reelblades.

4.Whilespinningthereelbackward,rotatethe
adjustingknobclockwise(Figure4),oneclick
atatime,untillightcontactofthebedknifeand
thereelisnoticedorawhisperingcuttingsound
isheard.
Note:Thespringarm(clicker)maybeadjusted
forpositivedetentbylooseningthecapscrews
securingthespringarmtotheadjustmentarm
retainer,adjustuntilasolidclickingsoundis
achievedwhentheadjustingknobisturned,and
retightenthecapscrews.
5.Checkthereel“carryover”byspinningthereel
backwardagain.Thereelshouldrotateone
totwocompleterevolutions.Lessthanone
revolutionindicatesheavycontact,whichmeans
thebedknifeandreelmustbereadjustedfor
lightcontact;refertosteps1,3,and4.
6.Atthebeginningofthecuttingday,whenthe
reelsarecold,engagethereelthrowoutknobs
(Figure4).Operatethecuttingunitsfor15to
20minutessothatthebedknifeandreelreach
normaloperatingtemperature;thenstopthe
operation.Next,disengagethereelthrowout
knobsandspinthereelbackward.Awhispering
sound,notclicking,shouldbeemitted,andthis
assuresthecorrectadjustment.Ifawhispering
soundisnotheard,thebedknifeandreelmust
bereadjusted;refertosteps3–5.Bycontrast,
whenthereelsarewarmfrombeingused,use
onlysteps1–5tomaintainlightcontactbetween
thebedknifeandthereel.
Important:Neveradjustthebedknifetothe
reelforlightcontactifthecuttingunitsare
coldbecausetheincreaseintemperature
duringoperationcouldcausethemetalto
expandandresultinheavycontact.Heavy
contactcausesunevenbedknifewearand
poorqualityofcut.However,lightcontact
betweenthebedknifeandthereel,whichis
desirable,minimizesthewearandkeepsthe
cuttingedgessharp.Adjustforlightcontact
everyfourhoursorsooner,eventhough
qualityofcutisacceptable.Whencutting
unitsareoperatedinsparsegrassorthe
temperatureoftheairishigh,theadjustment
forlightcontactmustbecheckedevenmore
frequentlytoavoidheavycontactbetween
thebedknifeandreel.Ifcuttingunitsarenot
operatedforashorttime,onehourafterany
use,checkforlightcontactafterresuming
operationfor15to20minutes;refertosteps
1–6.
AdjustingtheBedknifeto

1.Positionthecuttingunitonalevelsurface.
Removeanypaintandgreasefromthebedknife
andthereelcuttingedges.
2.Makesurethatthethrowoutknobs(Figure5)
aredisengagedandthebedknifetoreelcontact
isremovedbyturningthebedknifeadjustment
knobcounterclockwise.
3.Insertalongstripofnewspaperbetweenthe
reelbladeandthebedknife.Whilerotatingthe
reelbackward,turnthebedknifeadjustingknob
(Figure5)clockwise,oneclickatatime,until
thepaperispinchedlightly,whichresultsinthe
