2.Noise–Acuttingunitthathassharpcutting
edgesandisadjustedwithlightcontactwill
emitadesirablewhisperingsoundwhenthe
reelisspinning.Bycontrast,buzzing,clicking,
ormetallicsoundsduringoperationindicate
thatthecuttingunitisprobablybeingoperated
withheavycontactbetweenthebedknifeand
thereel.Heavycontactcausesunevenor
wavywearonthebedknifeandreelcutting
edges.Grindingisrequiredtorepairadamaged
bedknifeandreel.Althoughthebedknifeand
reelareadjustedcorrectlyforlightcontact,
notcheswilleventuallydevelopatbothendsof
thebedknife.Thesenotchesmustberounded
offorledushwithcuttingedgeofbedknifeto
assuresmoothoperation.
3.LooseReelBearings–Ifreelbearingsare
suspectedtobeloose,checkthemimmediately
orextensivedamagemayresult;refertoReel
BearingAdjustment.
4.HittingaForeignObject–Thebedknifeand
thereelcuttingedgescanbedamagedifa
foreignobjectishit.Thedamage,ifitisnot
toosevere,canberepairedintheeld.Start
bylingdownhighspotsonthebedknifeand
thereel(Figure10).Useaballpeenhammer
tostraightenanyreelbladesthatmaybebent.
Sincethebedknifeusuallyspringsawayfromthe
reeluponimpact,thebedknifemustbeadjusted;
refertoParalleltheBedknifetotheReel.
