Note:Afterareelhasrunforanextendedperiodoftime
thebladecontactpointorlandareawillkeepgettingwider
andeventuallywillbethefullbladewidth.Thisisnormal
anddoesnotmeanthatthereelhastoberegroundtostay
effective.Acuttingunitcancuteffectivelywithfullwidth
bladesiftheadjustmentischeckedfrequentlytomaintain
sharpcuttingedges.
Afterthereelandbedknifehavebeenground,performthe
followingadjustments:
1.SettheHeight–of–Cut
2.ParalleltheBedknifetotheReel
Note:Asthereelbladescontinuetorunagainstthe
bedknifeaslightburrwillappearonthefrontcutting
edgesurfacethefulllengthofthebedknife.Ifaleis
occasionallyrunacrossthefrontedgetoremovethis
burr,improvedcuttingcanbeobtained.
Ifthereelbladeedgesandthebedknifeedgeareslightly
roundedanddonothaveseverenicks,lappingonly
withalappingcompoundmayrestoretheedgesand
match.Oftentimesamowerisdeemedbyuserstoneed
grindingwhenthereelbearingadjustment,bedknife
adjustmentand/orlappingisallthatisnecessary.
Lapping
Mowersaresetupforlappingasfollows:
1.Removetherighthandwheel.
2.Placethewheelunderthegearcaseforsupport.
3.Removethereelpinioncover(Figure15).

4.Disengagethereel.
5.Connectthelappingmachinecouplertothenuton
theendofthereelshaft.
Whenlapping,useagoodgradeofcommerciallapping
compound.Amediumgritshouldbeforinitiallapping
andanegritfornishing.Asolutionofonepart
liquiddetergentandtwopartslappingcompoundis
recommended.Theliquiddetergentgreatlyeases
washingawaythecompoundwhennished.Water
solubleoilmayalsobeusedasacompoundcarrier.
Note:Thelappingsolutionmustbekeptinfree
owingconditiontogetevendistributiononthe
bedknifeandreel.
Thelappingprocedureisasfollows:
1.Adjustthebedknifetothereelsolightcontactis
evident.
2.Operatethelappingmachinesothereelturnsina
reversedirection.Applylappingsolutioncontinuously
andmaintainlightbedknifetoreelcontact.
3.Stopthelappingmachineperiodicallytocheckthe
cuttingsurfacesforsharpness.Continuelappinguntil
thesharpcuttingedgeshavebeenrestored.
Note:Ifthecuttingedgesareseverelyrounded,both
sharpeningandlappingmayberequired.
4.Washoffallthelappingsolution.Usingpaper,check
forsharpnessalongtheentirelengthofeachreel
blade.Ifthepapercannotbecutcleanlyalongthe
entirelengthofeachreelblade,continuedlappingis
necessary.
ReplacingtheBedknife
1.Toreplacethebedknife,removetheeleven(11)screws
holdingtheknifetothebedbar;replacetheknifeand
reinstallthescrews.Allscrewsshouldbelubricated
withoilandtorquedto28.3–33.9N-m(250–300
in.–lb).Thescrewsshouldbetightenedbystartingat
thecenterofthebedknifeandalternatinguntilallthe
screwsaresecured.
