4.Tomakeaneradjustmenttothecuttingheight
ortoadjusttheroller,theadjustingnutmaybe
moved1/2notchor1.19mm(3/64inch)by
usingthefollowingprocedure:
A.Removethecapscrewandtheadjustingnut
securingtherollerbrackettothegearcase.
Donotmovetherollerbracket.
B.Repositionthecapscrewandtheadjusting
nuttotheupperholeinthegearcase.
C.Slidetherollerbracketupordown1/2notch
topositiontheadjustingnutintothecorrect
notchandtightenthecapscrew.
OperatingTips
MowingSpeed—Thecuttingunitisdesignedto
cutgrasswellatanygroundspeedbetween1.6
and9.66km/h(1and6mph)butformostturf
conditions,groundspeedsof6.4to9.66km/h(4
to6mph)producethebestqualityofcut.Ground
speed,however,mustbereducedwhenturning
becauseexcessivespeedwillcausetheoutside
cuttingunitstobounceandskipontheturf.
Excessiveheat,causedbythereelspinningtoo
fast,canalsodamagethebedknifeandthereel.
Sincethegrasslubricatesthebedknifeandreel
duringoperation,slowdownwhencuttingsparse
grass,extremelydrygrass,orwhentrimming.Any
lackorsignicantreductionoflubricationproduces
excessiveheatbuildupand,subsequently,heavy
contactbetweenthebedknifeandthereel,which
resultsinunevenbedknifewearandpoorquality
ofcut.Therefore,reelsmustbedisengagedand
stoppedbeforemowersaretransportedacross
parkinglots,roads,orwheneverthelubrication
isminimal.
HeightofCut—Todeterminetheeffectiveheight
ofcut,thelengthofthegrasstobecutmustbe
checked.Theheightofcutshouldbesetandthe
turfmowedfrequentlysothatnomorethan1/3of
theleafiscutoff.Ifthecuttingunitisequipped
withpneumatictires,pressuremustbemaintained
at241.3kpa(35psi).Lowtirepressurecancause
bedknifetodipintothegrassandscalptheturf.
Anunevencutwilllikelyresult.
OperatingSound—Acuttingunitthatisadjusted
correctlygivesoffawhisperingsoundwhen
operated.Iftherearebuzzing,clicking,ormetallic
sounds,thecuttingunithasprobablybeen
operatedwithheavycontactbetweenthebedknife
andthereel.Thereelorbedknifecouldalsohave
hitaforeignobject.Anoisycuttingunitmustbe
stopped,repaired,andadjustedorseveredamage
willresult.
MowingPattern—Topreventgrassfromlying
downandimprovedappearanceoftheturf,
alternatemowingdirectionsifpossible,eachtime
anareaiscut.
CausesofPoorQualityof
Cut
1.Bedknife/ReelContact(Figure8)Theremust
belightcontactbetweenthebedknifeandthe
reeltokeepthecuttingedgessharpandto
produceanexcellentqualityofcut.Bycontrast,
cuttingunitsoperatedwithoutlightcontactallow
abrasivematerialsandgrasstopassbetween
thebedknifeandthereel.Thiserodingaction
roundsoffthebedknifeandthereelcutting
edges,whichresultsinapoorqualityofcut.If
thecuttingedgesbecomeround,thebedknife
andthereelmustbelapped.Excessiverounding
offofthecuttingedgesmayrequirethatthe
bedknifeandthereelbegroundandlapped.
Nevercompensateforroundcuttingedgesby
tighteningthebedknifeadjustingknobuntilthere
isheavycontactbecausethebedknifeandthe
reelwillwearunevenlyandcauseariingeffect.
