–Useextremecautionwhenoperating
themachineneardrop-offs,ditches,
embankments,waterhazards,orother
hazards.Themachinecouldsuddenlyrollover
ifawheelgoesovertheedgeortheedge
cavesin.Establishasafetyareabetweenthe
machineandanyhazard.
–Identifyhazardsatthebaseoftheslope.
Iftherearehazards,mowtheslopewitha
pedestrian-controlledmachine.
–Ifpossible,keepthecuttingunitsloweredto
thegroundwhileoperatingonslopes.Raising
thecuttingunitswhileoperatingonslopescan
causethemachinetobecomeunstable.
StartingtheEngine
Note:Youmayneedtobleedthefuelsystemifany
ofthefollowingsituationshaveoccurred;referto
BleedingtheFuelSystem(page36):
•Itistheinitialstartupofanewengine.
•Theenginehasshutoffbecauselackoffuel.
•Youperformedmaintenanceforthefuelsystem
components,suchasreplacingthefuellter.
1.Ensurethattheparkingbrakeisengaged,and
thereeldriveswitchisintheDISENGAGEposition.
2.Removeyourfootfromthetractionpedaland
ensurethatthepedalisintheNEUTRALposition.
3.Movethethrottlelevertothe1/2throttleposition.
4.Insertthekeyintotheswitchandrotateittothe
ON/PREHEATpositionuntiltheglowplugindicator
lightgoesout(approximately7seconds);then
rotatethekeytotheSTARTpositiontoengage
thestartermotor.Releasethekeywhenthe
enginestarts.
Note:Thekeymovesautomaticallytothe
ON/RUNposition.
Important:Topreventoverheatingofthe
startermotor,donotengagethestarter
longerthan15seconds.After10secondsof
continuouscranking,wait60secondsbefore
engagingthestartermotoragain.
5.Whentheengineisstartedforthersttime
orafteranoverhauloftheengine,operate
themachineinforwardandreversefor1to2
minutes.Alsooperatetheliftleverandcutting
unitdriveswitchtoensureproperoperationof
allparts.
Note:Turnthesteeringwheeltotheleftand
righttocheckthesteeringresponse,thenshut
theengineoffandcheckforoilleaks,loose
parts,andanyotherwearordamage.
CAUTION
Checkingforoilleaks,looseparts,and
othermalfunctionscouldresultininjury.
Shutofftheengineandwaitforall
movingpartstostopbeforechecking
foroilleaks,looseparts,andother
malfunctions.
ShuttingOfftheEngine
1.MovethethrottlecontroltotheIDLEposition.
2.Engagetheparkingbrake.
3.MovethecuttingunitdriveswitchtoDISENGAGE
position.
4.Lowerthecuttingunits.
5.Shutofftheengine,removethekey,andwaitfor
allmovingpartstostop.
CuttingGrasswiththe
Machine
1.Movethemachinetothejobsiteandalignthe
machineoutsidethecuttingareafortherst
cuttingpass.
2.Ensurethatthecutting-unitdriveswitchispulled
up(theDISENGAGEposition);CuttingUnitDrive
Switch(page27).
3.MovethethrottletotheFASTposition;referto
Throttle(page27).
4.Usethecutting-unitshiftlevertolowerthe
cuttingunitstotheground;refertoCuttingUnit
DriveSwitch(page27).
5.Pressthecutting-unitdriveswitchtoprepare
cuttingunitsforoperation(theENGAGEposition).
6.Usethecutting-unitshiftlevertoraisethecutting
unitsofftheground.
7.Beginmovingthemachinetowardthecutting
areaandlowerthecuttingunits.
Note:Thecuttingunitsrun.
8.Beforereachingtheturnaroundlocation,pull
backthecutting-unitshiftleveronlylongenough
toraisethecuttingunits,andreleasethecontrol
lever.
Important:Donotholdthecutting-unitshift
leverbackwhileturning.
9.Performatear-shapedturntoquicklylineupfor
yournextpass.
